Artist in Residence ~ Bob Doster We are excited to have Mr. Bob Doster as one of our Artist in Residence guests! He has been working with students of all ages for more than forty years and is on the roster of SC Arts Commission Arts in Education Artists. Our students have drawn their “Self-Portraits” on paper and then cut them out of steel using a blowtorch! Dr. Brooks commented, “It’s been fun watching the students experience something that could be a once in a life time opportunity for them!” Mr. Doster will be taking these cutouts and turning them into a sculpture that we hope to have displayed at the front of the school by the end of the school year! Many of the exciting opportunities like this one are made possible through our ABC Project grant with funding through the SC Arts Commission, Title I, and local funds.

Title I Updates We are excited about some changes we have been able to make to our Title I plan this year with the help of our Title I and SIC Committee. As we worked through this year, we realized that we might be able to move some funds around to better serve our students. We set out to address two growing concerns: 1) media center non-fiction books, and 2) refurbishing teacher laptops. As Ms. Near, our Media Specialist, has provided more instruction for our students, we realized that we needed more non-fiction books added to our media center collection, so we have requested an addendum that will allow us to purchase around $8000.00 in books for our media center. As we’ve moved from SMART Boards to Active Panels in our classrooms and now have the ability to connect our teacher laptops to the panels using Apple TV, it has become increasingly clear that our dated laptops are having a hard time keeping up. We plan to begin replacing our academic teachers’ laptops this year, followed by our fine arts and related arts teachers next year. Both of these changes will help us improve our instructional program.

Busbee Students attend Midlands Math Meet 6th and 7th grade students from Busbee Creative Arts Academy attended the Midlands Math Meet at Midlands Technical College on Saturday, February 11th. Busbee students and students from other schools collaborated and completed hands on math games, online questions, team missions, jeopardy, and a spin to win a fortune game. Students had a great time meeting new people, taking part in fun, and participating in the challenging math games. The following students attended: Sabrina Anderson, Austin Knouse, Garrison Helms, Haskell Jenkins, Naahzeikial Mays, Adrian Ibarro Alonso, Aden Johnson, De'ere Fields, Xzavier Mathis, and Alayshia Cooper.

Thank you goes to Ms. Ashley Seats and Mr. Gregory Taylor, both 6th grade math faculty, for coordinating this event for our students.

Congratulations to our newest Myrdis Walker Scholars Inductees: Jamari Wright, Nevaeh Marshall, Angela Adams, Kenyon Burgess, Jay Johns, Kelsie Lewis, Marquise Edwards. The program is set up to recognize outstanding African-American gifted students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 at the end of first semester each year. Great job students!

Thanks to our Title I funding, Busbee Creative Arts Academy will be hosting the 4th annual Cranium Quest event on April 25 at 3:30 – 6:30 pm . During this event 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students work in teams to complete a variety of challenges like building structures and creating solutions to fun problems that require teamwork, logic, and creative problem solving. Prizes are awarded to the top three teams. It is a fun-packed great experience and we encourage all students to participate.

Busbee Creative Arts Academy truly believes a student exposed to the successes of others in the outside world, is more inspired to focus on their own talent and develop their potential. For the fourth consecutive year Busbee Creative Arts Academy hosted the Lexington School District Two’s 4th annual Day of Dance. It has been such a popular and successful event that this year the event was extended to two days and opened for all rising 6th graders in Lexington District Two to participate. With a collaborative effort between Jenna Oliver, Busbee’s dance instructor and Saluda River Academy for the Arts’ dance instructor, Kayla Jennings, dance students attended four master classes of dance technique. Master classes were Hip-hop Dance taught by Guest Artist, Jamal Tisdale. Mr. Tisdale has appeared on MTV's popular programs Sweet 16 and Made and currently teaches, choreographs and dances in Charleston, SC. Contemporary Dance with guest artist Joy Scott of Coker College. Modern Dance with Courtney Howard also of Coker College and Jazz with Sara Monts of Columbia College. The student dancers performed an informal showcase to close the 2-day festival in Busbee’s gymnasium. Great job to all those who worked in making this the best Day of Dance festival yet!

Busbee Celebrates African American History Busbee' 8th Grade Performing Arts Company and Bulldog Steppers took part in Lexington School Distict Two's 5th Annual African American History Month Celebration. The program was held Thursday, February 23 in the BrooklandCayce High School Auditorium. The theme, "UNITED: In Living Color", was inspired by the bold style of the 1990s TV show. It fulfilled its mission of not only educating the audience of the achievements of notable African Americans, but showed them it’s OK to live loud, daring, and "in color. "

8th Graders explore SC State Museum

A scavenger hunt kept students competitively engaged and afterwards they visited the observation deck where they put on some cool glasses that allowed them to look directly at the sun. That was very neat!!

The audience erupted with applause, standing ovations, and even laughter as our kids performed. It was a full house (standing room only)! If you ever want to witness the power of how hard work produces growth, just watch Day 1 of practice vs. the actual day of performance. AMAZING! Way to Go Busbee 8th Grade PAC & Steppers! Of course this could not happen without the dedication of our talented staff. Sincere appreciation to Ms. Terry-Lewis, Ms. Oliver, Ms. Flynn, Ms. Myers, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Brawley, Ms. Rogers, and Ms. Kennedy, Dr. Brooks & Ms. Hucks.

They also visited the Planetarium and learned about the universe. Overall, the students demonstrated Bulldog PRIDE. SHOUT OUT to Ms. Terry-Lewis for coordinating and to Mr. Durant, Ms. Brawley, Ms. James, Ms. Wilmot, Ms. Jefferson, and Ms. Bright for chaperoning the field trip.

Thanks to our Title I funding,

Busbee students were provided an opportunity to participate in the Boys & Girls activity approved in this year’s Title I plan. The event was coordinated by Ms. Stephanie Hucks, Busbee’s Assistant Principal, along with other Busbee staff members. Students stayed after school for a pizza supper and participated in college and career planning activities. Afterwards, everyone boarded district buses to travel to the Colonial Life Arena to watch the women’s University of SC team play Vanderbilt. It was a winning afternoon and evening for everyone involved. USC won their game. And, for Busbee this was definitely a win because many students commented that this was the first USC event that they had ever attended! Everyone said it was an experience that they’d remember for a long long time to come.

Please congratulate all the archers that Participated In the Timberwolf Challenge. We are so proud of you!

Outstanding Fees

Reminder

Students tried yoga for the first time. Ms. Jefferson, Busbee’s English and Language Arts Instruction Coach, knows that students face challenges daily and wanted to give them an outlet to release tension and, hopefully, bounce back with smiles and positive attitudes. She conducts yoga instruction to do just that. She calls this mindful meditation. We will check in with Ms. Jefferson to see how the program is progressing.

Your child may have outstanding school debt. This debt needs to be paid in order for your child to participate in extra activities. For eighth graders, all debt must be cleared before they are allowed to participate in the promotion ceremony at the end of the year. To maintain your child’s eligibility to participate in all of our school’s programs, please send in payment. For questions, call Ms. Curry 739-4070.

Parents of 6th graders and their guests enjoyed an informal drama and dance performance to showcase 6th grade student’s talents and usher out the end of the third 9 weeks’ period. Ms. Flynn’s 6th grade drama students performed two short plays, "The Baker's Neighbor" and "Wolf! Wolf! Wolf!” The 6th grade dancers performed three pieces: Black and Blue, Heartless, and Freeze which were choreographed by Mrs. Oliver, Busbee’s Dance Teacher, and Ms. Kenney, this semester’s dance intern. Black and Blue was performed by sixth period dance students. The dance was inspired by Martha Graham's choreography "Diversion of Angels". Heartless was performed by fifth period dance students and was also inspired by Martha Graham. This piece used body bags similar to the ones used in Graham's piece "Lamentation". The final dance, Freeze, was performed by both fifth and sixth period students. This dance utilized different elements of dance including levels, shapes, and locomotor movements.

Our Goal…We believe in a partnership with our parents, students, and staff to develop the whole child. We invited parents in the Lexington District Two community to join us for Magnet Night to get to know The Academy! During their tour we explained how our arts infused curriculum and integrated approach would help their child develop the soft skills colleges and businesses value. They met the staff, toured our school, and participated in some really fun and exciting activities. And, most encouraging to all of us, they asked lots and lots of questions. It was truly a unique experience for all the staff and genuinely showed what sets The Academy apart. Another Title I Funding Event.
