Content (Matthew 9:35 – 10:42) 1. Matthew 9:35 – 38 Jesus continues his ministry teaching the good news and healing with compassion the states to his disciples that the harvest is plentiful but worker are few; ask for direction of the Lord. 2. Matthew 10: 1 – 1 Jesus gives authority to his disciples to drive out impure spirits and heal disease and sickness. 3. Matthew 10:2 – 4 Jesus names his disciples: 1. Simon called Peter 5. Philip 9. James son of Alphaeus 2. Peter’s brother Andrew 6. Bartholomew 10. Thaddaeus 3. James son of Zebedee 7. Thomas 11. Simon the Zealot 4. James’ brother John 8. Matthew 12. Judas Iscariot 4. Matthew 10:5 – 8 The disciples are instructed Not to go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans, but to go to the lost in Israel preaching the good news and healing the diseased and sick. 5. Matthew 10:9 – 15 As you go, take the minimum including no money, but rely on God to provide people and provision and should you be rejected, shake the dust off and move on. 6. Matthew 10:16 – 23 Missions work will not warmly welcomed, expect persecution even arrest but know that the Holy Spirit will speak through you as you present God’s message so if you find persecution, flee. 7. Matthew 10:24 – 31 Jesus teaches that we are all equal in God’s sight so do not be afraid of man but be afraid of the One God who now commands us, and proclaim Jesus message everywhere. 8. Matthew 10:32 – 33 Jesus declares “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven, but whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.” 9. Matthew 10:34 - 39 Jesus declares that He did not come to bring peace on earth, but a sword to divide believers from non-believers and that whoever does not take up their cross and follow Christ is not worthy of him and whoever finds their life in Christ will lose it, and whoever loses their life for Christ’s sake will find it. 10. Matthew 10:40 – 42 Jesus teaches us that whoever welcomes a believer welcomes Christ and the Trinity and lays out comments about rewards in heaven for the righteous, the prophet and even the common man who offers little to a disciple. Divisions Matthew 9:35 – 10:8 Jesus commissions disciples to go out to Israel only and preach, heal and cast out demons. Application: What do you make of the statement that Jesus send the disciple to go first to the Jew and also for the Greek. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God … first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. - Romans 1:16

Matthew 10:9 – 42 Jesus instructs and prepares disciples for how God provides by faith and that persecution will come, but that God will reward the faithful. Application: Are you prepared to be used by God and speak through the power of Holy Spirit?
