C4C
Challenge 4 Charity Weekend
SPORTS OVERVIEW April 19-‐20, 2013
2013
General Overview
Sports Competition
C4C weekend is first and foremost designed to be FUN. Events are extremely competitive and so we ask that all participants act in an appropriate manner throughout the weekend.
Tardiness
Please be prompt. Disqualification for being late will be decided by C4C team members/sports coordinators on a per event basis. Generally, participants will be eliminated when play is interrupted based on their absence. Participating in multiple sports at the same time will NOT be allowed.
Fighting
• • • •
Any fighting will disqualify BOTH teams from that entire event. Event coordinators are not required to give a warning. Event coordinators will have FINAL say on all disqualifications. Players who are ejected from one event will not be eligible to play in any other sport for the remainder of the weekend and may also be barred from attending any subsequent C4C activities.
Volunteers
•
Schools are obligated to provide an adequate number of volunteers for the weekend’s events who will generally be able to participate as well. C4C will provide schools with a schedule of required volunteers. Failure to comply with the schedule or let the management team know of any changes in schedules could result in a disqualification for the event.
•
Referees
• •
Equipment
C4C provides lots of sports equipment for the weekend. However, we encourage teams to bring their own sporting equipment, especially to use during warm-‐up. (See write-‐ups for additional details on provided equipment.)
Dispute Resolution
1. Resolution of disputes will be deferred to the referee in almost all cases. 2. If you have general rules questions, use this set of rules and/or ask the sports event coordinator. Coordinators have absolute FINAL say on all rules disputes.
Brackets
Last year’s winner and runner-‐up will be placed in separate divisions for the round-‐ robin play wherever possible. The brackets will be provided as far in advance as possible.
Tie Breakers
Ties will happen. Unless otherwise specified in the rules for a sport, tiebreakers will be decided as follows: (1) Head-‐to-‐head record, (2) Point differential, (3) Total points scored, or a (4) Coin toss.
Final Scoring
•
• • •
Referees will be provided for basketball, football, soccer and softball Many other events will require volunteer referees. We understand this is not ideal and that refereeing can be difficult, so please be respectful to the other schools’ volunteers.
Teams will be awarded points based on their results, which will be determined based on gameplay, e.g. head-‐to-‐head tournament play, total points awarded during competition, and/or final record. st th 1 through 9 place teams, depending on total participating schools, will receive 90 through 10 points, respectively Participation events are 50 points Allocated and accepted byes will receive a point total based on the school’s average finish in its other sports

Each school can enter one team of two players. Round robin pool play with a minimum two games per team. Top 4 seeds advance to a single elimination tournament.
Overview
§ § §
Rules and Gameplay
Basic Rules: § Game is played with 1 small ball (Pallino) and 4 larger balls (Bocce) per team. § The Pallino is thrown first and becomes the target. § Each Bocce is thrown with the goal of placing it closest to the Pallino. § After each team throws 1 Bocce, the team farthest from the Pallino throws until they are able to place a Bocce closer to the Pallino. Play alternates until all four balls are thrown § A point is scored for the team with its Bocce closest to the Pallino, and additional points are earned for each Bocce of the same team that is closer to the Pallino than the closest Bocce of the opposing team. § For additional rules, please see http://www.bocce.org/rules.html. Gameplay § Teams will flip a coin to decide who goes first. § 3 innings per game, no more than 10 minutes (games are scheduled to be short and fun). § Semi-‐finals and finals will be 4 innings. § If any game ends tied, each player will throw one ball, with the closest ball winning. Challenge Races
Overview
§ § §
Rules and Gameplay
§
§
§
§
The Challenge Races will consist of 4 events: the obstacle course, cavalry fight, centipede race and the tug of war. Each event will consist of 8 people, which must have at least 3 women. No cap on team size Obstacle Course: 3 parts total. The first team to complete all 3 parts wins. o Bat-‐spin super slide. A person will jump for a set length in a potato sack/plastic garbage bag to a bat, put their forehead on one end of the bat while keeping the other touching the ground, spin around ten times and then continue down-‐field in the sack/bag until he/she crosses (crawling and sliding perhaps) a water-‐covered tarp. o 3-‐legged balloon burst. When all team members have completed the bat spin, team members will pair up, each tying one leg to the leg of his/her partner. Each pair, in turn, runs down field, picks up a water balloon, and bursts it between their bodies. Hands may be used to pick up the balloon but not to pop it. As soon as the balloon bursts, the next pair may start. After the last pair has bust their balloon, the team gets in formation for the bucket brigade. o Bucket Brigade. The object of the bucket brigade is to transfer water from one trash can to another using 2 buckets. All team members form a single-‐file line facing the full trashcan. The empty trashcan will be placed behind the last person. The first person fills a bucket and passes it over his/her head to the person behind him/her. The bucket is passed in the same manner all the way down the line, until the last team member pours the contents in the empty trashcan. Note that all passes, and the final pour, must be over-‐the-‐head, while facing forward. Teams may pass empty buckets forward in whatever manner they choose, but all participants must stay in line. Cavalry Fight: Each team produces 2 "horses,” including 1 woman and 1 man. o Every one fights at once. The woman sits on the man’s shoulders, wears a foam hat and uses a foam bat to knock the hat off of the opponents’ head. The final rider with a hat on wins the event o Please note: Be careful to avoid using excessive force when attacking other team’s horses. Remember, the Challenge Races are just for fun! Centipede Race: Each team of 8 people will line up, and will have their legs tied to the legs of each team member in front and in back of them, forming a "centipede". The centipede will have to run down field and cross the finish line. The first team to complete the race wins. Tug-‐of-‐War: Each team of 8 contestants grabs the rope on the opposite end as their opponents. The tug will begin "fairly," i.e. with no team gaining an advantage from the start. The winning team is the team who forces their opponent to give 8 feet of ground.

§ § § §
Rules and Gameplay
§ § § § § § §
§ §
Schools can field unlimited teams, however, only 10 players can be on the court at any time Total of four balls in competition Round robin pool play with a minimum two games per team. Top 4 seeds advance to a single elimination tournament. Each team starts with max 10 people on the court (min 3 women) and 2 balls Play area is half of a basketball court with a bright piece of tape in the middle. Each round robin match is best of 5 games, teams switch ends in between games. Each single elimination tournament match is best of 7 games. Tennis shoes and shirts required. Extra subs (or eliminated players) may re-‐enter when a ball is caught, but there is always a max of ten people on court per team Players must re-‐enter in the order of elimination, unless subs are present. All subs who are deemed eligible must enter the game before eliminated players. Gameplay o If a player is hit by a “fly ball”, before it hits the floor and after being thrown by a player on the opposing team, that player is out. o If a player catches a “fly ball”, the thrower is out, and the other team returns a player to the court. Teams are responsible for managing their queues in order. o A ball deflected by a held ball, whether caught or not, does not result in player elimination. o A ball rebounding off a “catch” attempt may be caught before touching the floor by any in-‐bounds player on the “hit” player’s team. The result is the same as a straight catch. o Catches out-‐of-‐bounds don’t count. If a ball deflects off a player and their teammate catches it out of bounds, then the first player is out. o Players cannot throw from out-‐of bounds. o Balls bouncing off walls or backboards cannot eliminate players either by being hit or caught. o Game ends once all players from a team have been eliminated. o Players may not lift each other to catch. Eliminated players must line up at the side of the court and can pass balls to their live teammates. Note: Any person that hits an opponent in the head with a ball will be ruled out, subject to the discretion of the referee st

Rules • Judges may not disqualify a contestant for failing to pronounce the word. • The pronouncer shall grant all word requests until the judges agree that the word has been made reasonably clear to the contestant. • Root word questions will not be entertained by the pronouncer or judges. • After starting the spelling of a word, a contestant may stop and start over, but must retrace the exact spelling for all letters already mentioned. • If the contestant changes any letters or their sequence from those first pronounced, he / she will be eliminated. • The judges may not disqualify a speller for asking a question. • The judges are in complete control of the competition. Their decision shall be final on all questions. Final Rounds (two contestants left) • Contestant 1 (C1) attempts to spell a word. o If C1 misspells the word, Contestant 2 (C2) shall be given an opportunity to spell that same word. § If C2 spells that word correctly, plus correctly spells the next word, then C2 is the champion. § If C2 spells that word correctly, but misspells the next word,

then C1 has a chance to correct the spelling, and spell the next word. If that word is spelled correctly, C1 is champion. § If C2 misspells the word, both shall continue in the competition and C1 is given another word. o If C1 spells the word correctly, then C2 shall be given an opportunity to spell the next word. § If C2 misspells the word, then C1 is champion. § If C2 correctly spells the word, then C1 is given a new word. Clarification: The champion must correct the misspelling of the other contestant and correctly spell the next word.
Pronouncers and Judges • The role of the pronouncer is (1) to correctly pronounce the word and (2) to give a sentence, definition, and other information about the word at the speller's request. • The pronouncer should make every effort to pronounce the words according to the diacritical markings in Scripps National Spelling Bee word lists and Webster's Third New International Dictionary and its Addenda Section. • The role of the judges is to determine whether the contestant has spelled the word correctly Other rules • Webster's latest International Dictionary as provided by Jackson Library at the Stanford Graduate School of Business shall serve as the final authority for the spelling of words. If more than one spelling is listed for a word that the pronouncer has provided for the speller to spell, any of these spellings shall be accepted as correct if all of the following three criteria are met: (1) The pronunciations of the words are identical, (2) the definitions of the words are identical, and (3) the words are clearly identified as being standard variants of each other. Spellings at other locations having temporal labels (such as archaic, obsolete), stylistic labels (such as substand, nonstand), or regional labels (such as North, Midland, Irish) which differ from main entry spellings not having these status labels shall not be accepted as correct. • If a word has one or more homonyms, the pronouncer will indicate which word is to be spelled. If the listed word is not properly identified, either by defining it or distinguishing the homonyms, any correct spelling of any homonym of the word will be accepted. • The speller shall not be disqualified for failing to note that a word is capitalized (noted as "cap," "usu cap," "often cap," or "sometimes cap" in Webster's Third New International Dictionary and its Addenda Section, copyright 2002, Merriam-‐Webster).

Teams must then adhere to this lineup, barring injury or other odd circumstances, throughout play during the C4C tournament. Schools are also asked to submit and play with teams in order of ability, (i.e. The A Men's doubles team is playing A and not being placed down at B). C4C is for fun and charity, and all teams are asked to submit their team in good faith. 5 minute warm-‐up max. 8 game pro set, no-‐ad scoring (12 point tie-‐break at 7-‐7), or TIME LIMIT, whichever comes first. Trivia Bowl
Overview
§
§ § §
The trivia bowl will consist of questions from an assortment of categories. The questions will cover all academic categories, as well as pop culture, current events, and sports. Each school is represented by a team of four people per round, there is not cap on team size (including at least one of each gender). Round robin pool play with a minimum two games per team. Top 4 seeds advance to a single elimination tournament.
§
Each team will have access to a single buzzer Emcee asks the question, and teams buzz in to answer. Teams can buzz before the question is finished but then get to hear no more of it. If the team answers correctly, they receive the points. If the team answers incorrectly, the other team gets an opportunity to hear the entire question and confer before answering. Teams can confer after buzzing but the person who buzzes must answer the question. 10 seconds are allowed between the buzz and the answer. The correct answer is the answer given on the answer card. Each contest will be made up of two 7 minute rounds, where each question in the 1st round is worth 10pts and each 2nd round question is worth 20pts. Ties in matches will be broken by reading three extra questions. If the score is still tied after that, we will read questions until someone gets one right (their team then wins). Event officials will handle any disputes for each match.

There will be three divisions (Men’s, Women’s, and Co-‐ed). Each team will play a maximum of 6 players at a time with no roster size limit. (For the co-‐ed tournament, each team must have an equal number of men and women on the floor). Teams may use duplicate players from the Coed teams on the Men's and Women's teams. Round robin pool play with a minimum two games per team. Top 4 seeds advance to a single elimination tournament.
Rules and Gameplay
Rules New USVBA rules have added new features such as rally scoring and net serves. These will be incorporated in the interest of moving games quicker. (Note: There will be NO LIBERO position utilized in this tournament.) The following rules are usually the most disputed so are spelled out for C4C here: § Non-‐participating teams will referee games. This means calling lifts, doubles, net violations and line calls. There shall be no arguing calls in this format and teams should agree to alternate who gets the close calls. § Be aware that if a team is absent from their refereeing duties, they are subject to not receiving ANY points in that division towards C4C scoring. § 5 minutes for warm-‐up strictly enforced between games. Teams not available for play when a game is to begin will be penalized 1 point per minute late. § Matches are given 25-‐minute time slots. § Open hand setting of serves is allowed. Players are allowed to receive with an overhead pass. § There is no centerline violation (under the net) as long as the player crossing the middle does not interfere with the play. Please avoid all potentially dangerous ankle-‐spraining situations in attempting to play a tight ball. § Without antennae on the nets, extend the poles upward to determine the playable net area. § Because it's difficult to track, a team may make as many substitutions as they would like. However, the substitute player must take the position of the player that is leaving. § Open hand dinks are allowed, as long as the player is in the front row. Game Scoring § Points will be scored on a rally system to ensure all matches will finish in time. All games except the Finals for each bracket will be a one-‐game match of 25 points, win by 2, or first to 30. Finals will be a best of 3 match to 25 points per rd game, and no cap. In case a 3 game tie breaker is played, it will run up to 15 points with no cap. § Teams will change sides at 12 points in round-‐robin play and after each set in the finals.
