Chemistry 11: Organic Chemistry Unit Project Influences of Organic Compounds on Society One of your projects for this term, and your major unit project, will be to look at the effect that different organic compounds have on your everyday life or society as a whole. You will be working in groups of 3 to 4 students and will have the opportunity to present your research in a 5-minute presentation to the class in any way you like (feel free to be as creative as possible). You will have some class time to work on the assignment but it will be expected that some of the work is done at home. Here are some key dates to keep in mind: Wednesday, May 31st: Full class period to work on project with your group Wednesday, June 7th: Projects due and short presentations start Thursday, June 8th: Presentation day if needed Your total project mark will be out of 40 points. Here is the mark break-down:   

20 points from my assessment of the presentation (rubric on the back) 10 points from your classmates’ assessment during the presentation (same rubric as the back) 10 points from your group mates (you will mark each other in terms of commitment to the project)

You and your group mates will pick from one of the following topics:       

Fossil fuels The discovery is insulin The effects of CFCs Hair curling and straightening products Green cleaning products Cancer treating drugs and how they work Lotions and skin moisturizers

     

Sport enhancing drugs Processed meats Waterproof and/or flame retardant clothing Pulp and paper processing Multi-vitamin supplements Large scale farming

During your presentation, you will be expected to answer the following questions: 1. 2. 3. 4.

How have these compounds or processes revolutionized thinking in the scientific community? What role do these compounds or processes play in your everyday life or society as a whole? How are these compounds synthesized or how do these processes take place? What constraints existed when creating these compounds or processes and how have they evolved as new scientific evidence has come to light?

These questions are vague to ensure that they cover all of the possible topic areas. You may also notice that you are focusing more on one question than others and that is to be expected. If you have any questions, please contact me as soon as possible for help.
