CHIFFON TOP TUTORIAL This top is a perfect summer essential and is a must-have for every wardrobe. All you need is around a meter of your favourite colour of chiffon fabric and about 30mins to an hour of your time. In this tutorial I will show you how to measure and create this top from scratch so that you can recreate it in different shapes and sizes for your friends and families. Preparing your machine    

Thread your machine and bobbin with co-ordinating threads. Set stitch length to 2.5cm. Set tension to 2 or 3(the looser the better) Test on a piece of your fabric to make sure the tension is right, if it is right when you sew the fabric, your stitches will lay flat and if is it too tight it will pull the fabric and pucker up as you sew. Make necessary adjustments before starting this project.

Preparing the fabric Chiffon is a delicate fabric and can be difficult to handle without proper care.  Make sure you press the fabric if is it crinkled before sewing  This fabric has no stretch so be generous with your seam allowance, you can always reduce it if is it too large.  Measure and cut the fabric on a flat surface and use weighted objects to hold it in place as it tends to be slippery

Step 1- Gather Materials

1 meter of Chiffon fabric Scissors Tailors chalk Measuring tape Iron Sewing Machine

Step 2- Take your measurements (include seam allowance of 1 inch)

     

Shoulder to shoulder  Shoulder to Bust  Collarbone to neckline  Shoulder to length of top  Around bust and add 2 inches Around the upper arm then add 4” 

Step 3- Transfer the measurements to your fabric Fold fabric in half and measure out a rectangle with these measurements Shoulder to shoulder (a) along the width

Shoulder to length of top (d) along the length

Next fold the fabric in 2 As shown in the image

Next measure 5 inches from the top of the folded corner as shown in the image

Then join the line with a curve as shown in the image

Next, measure 1 inch from the top corner of the folded side as shown in the image.

Then draw curve joining the 1 inch mark to the bigger curve as shown in the image

Next mark your shoulder to bust(b) measurements on the folded edge of the fabric as shown in the image.

Then mark your bust measurements on that line(e)

Next divide your upper arm measurements(f) by 2 and mark from the top corner of the unfolded edge.

Then join the line as shown in the image.

Then join the line from the bust down the length of the top,

Step 3- Cutting the fabric

Cut the top neck line and the sides.

Next open the top and take the top fabric off.

Then fold it like and cut the lower neckline.

Result, we are almost there :)

Step 4- Sew the fabric together

Now, sew the fabric on the lines shown in the image. Leave a 1.5cm seam allowance.

Next sew the all the seams flat with a steam iron. This sets the seams in the fabric and makes your top look professional.

Step 5 – Finishing up Now measure 1 inch on the arm of the top and press to create a crease as shown in the image.

Then fold the edge of the fabric to touch the crease. As shown in the image.

Now sew a straight stitch round the arms. ½ a cm from the edge.

Next fold at the crease and sew as close as possible from the edge. See Image.

Do this to both arms and the bottom hem of the top and steam press down to set the seams.

Next using a small zigzag stitch, sew round the neckline.

Next press the seams down and trim the raw edges.

Then measure 1cm from the edge and press down. See image.

Next change your machine back to the straight stitch and 2.5 length and sew around the neck as close to the edge as possible.

It is very important to tidy up the insides of your work. There are two very easy options if you don't have a serger/over locker. Sew up the raw edges using a small zigzag stitch as shown in the image.

OR Trim the raw edges with pinking shears to stop fraying.
