SCORING: Add up you’re A’s, B’s, and C’s. If you answered mostly A’s, you’re the WORKHORSE: You’re constantly working, multitasking, and taking on extra duties. While you tirelessly act and do, it is inevitable that the exhaustion will catch up to you and leave you feeling wiped. Working hard and “being ON” all the time also begs the question: Is there anything on your to-do list that gives you pleasure? What you can do ASAP: Whip out your handy dandy to-do list. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most enjoyable, how would you rank your most enjoyable tasks? Is there anything that frees you up for at least 10 minutes to focus on something pleasing? If not, knock off one of those undesirable tasks and replace it with an activity that gives you utmost pleasure. Examples include slowly savoring your favorite piece of chocolate, dining out at your favorite eatery with your BFF, or curling up with your favorite book (if you’re pressed for time, a magazine counts!). Not only will this approach allow you to regain precious time for yourself, but it will also reduce your chances of collapsing from fatigue.
If you answered mostly B’s, you’re the OPERATOR: You tend to be busy, but functional. You’re getting through your task list, carving out bits of time to do things for yourself, but just because you’re the operator doesn’t mean you’re a smooth operator—there is room for improvement! What you can do ASAP: List the top 5 things you like to do for yourself. Now, what’s keeping you from doing what you’ve listed? If you’re not doing one or more of these things, ask yourself why? Reviewing these reasons will help you see all the fun things that you’re putting off and shed light on the obstacles that get in the way. Plus, you don’t have to wait until that Hawaii vacation to fit in some fun!
If you answered mostly C’s, you’re the STRAGGLER: You’re working hard, but starting to slow down--it may be causing you to spread yourself too thin and stray off the road in one or more areas of your life. While you’re going through the motions of your daily routine and getting by, your drooping eyelids and scattered brain cells will cause you to get things done with less consistency and more mistakes. What you can do ASAP: Overcome your straggling with a mini dose of self-care! Within the next 24 hours, try getting at least 7 hours of sleep to rest your muscles, consume one protein-packed meal to nourish your brain cells, and fantasize about your dream vacation for 10 minutes to ease your spirit. Not only will these small acts of care nourish your body, but the extra energy you come away with will keep you alert enough to prevent you from driving off the road, passing out during a meeting, and putting your phone in the toaster.
