On the commutativity of hypercube diagrams Speaker: Professor Paul Kainen Department of Mathematics Georgetown University Friday, October 24, 2014 @ 3:15pm St. Mary’s 326 Abstract: Some unexpected properties of commutativity are demonstrated: (i) The sum of commutative squares need not be commutative, (ii) The commutativity of every cycle in a hypercube is guaranteed by the commutativity of the squares in a special basis, and (iii) If the number n of non-commutative squares in the d-cube, d>2, satisfies n < d-1, then n = 0. For the 5-cube, (ii) means that 49 squares force the commutativity of 51 billion cycles while (iii) means that a 5-cube diagram, in which there are 3 or fewer squares which may not be commutative, must actually commute. Methods involve combinatorics and a role for topology in the construction of graph cycles from an algebraic basis. The results on commutativity of diagrams hold under some constraints on the morphism types. The graph theory results apply to molecular biology.
