“Personal Ideals, Reasons, Requirements, and the Ideal of Coherence”
Friday, Feb 24 3:30pm-5:30pm West Duke 202
I have been working for a few years on different pieces of a project in which I am exploring the nature and implications of what I call “personal ideals.” What is the relationship between (i) the fact that we are committed to being good (enough) in many different ways and (ii) the fact that we take ourselves to have certain reasons for action and to be subject to certain requirements? What does the heterogeneity of our personal ideals suggest about the possibility of moral dilemmas? What has to be true of the ideal of treating others “with concern and respect” in order for those who have internalized this ideal to believe that what they are morally required to do is what they are required to do, all things considered? How does the ideal of coherence relate to our other, more substantive, ideals? My talk will be an excerpt from these interconnected explorations.
