Project Description The Prespa region produces from 50.000 to 70.000 tons of apples depending on the year. Due to various reasons (restricted apple market, inadequate marketing, etc) significant quantity of the apples production ends as waste usually disposed in the river of Golema Reka. The main project objective is to reduce the negative impact of organic waste (apples) on ground and in the water and at the same time to reuse organic waste as compost. This is to be achieved through: • Soil assessment in the areas near the river of Golema Reka, where usually organic waste is disposed, • Organizing round table and educating local population on practical methods of collecting waste, • Undertaking practical steps by constructing and placing/ donating composing units/bins to interested local apple producers. • Organizing public campaign on using organic waste and composting. Project achievements • Soil in three locations (where usually organic waste was disposed) assessed in order to determine the soil fertility, • Organized two one-day workshops with local population on waste and composting fundamentals (what is waste, introduction to composting, methods for composting, etc.), followed with session of questions and answers. Approximately 30 apple producers were trained to compost, • 10 composting units/bins were constructed and donated to apple farmers, • Prepared public campaign on the importance and significance of organic waste and composting, including participation in the local radio station, articles in the regional newspaper and through direct communication with the local population, • Poster promoting organic waste and composting was prepared, printed and placed in the Prespa region, • According to the estimations there has been app. 150 USD per househouseholds income by using home-made compost instead of chemical fertilizers and at the same time reducing production costs, improving the quality and quantity of the products and restoring soil fertility. Follow up
The project activities are the starting point for preparation of the full project, subject to approval, with further upscaled activities. Civil Association Focus is active partner and participant within the current GEF FSP project Integrated Ecosystem Management in the Trans—boundary Prespa Park Region.
