Computer Literacy Course Outline Our Middle School Mission
To teach students practical life skills related to academics, enhance their transition from the elementary level and provide a foundation for positive growth in the Middle school experience. These Life skills include: Goal Setting, Responsibility, Organization and Work Ethic. To teach and encourage students to be innovative in their way of thinking through project- based learning and technology. To work with parents and team teachers to enhance student achievement and provide a foundation for success here at the Middle School. th
Recognizing that 6 grade students are transitioning into a new educational environment, this course is designed to introduce and assist students in the following areas: Goal Setting/Good Study Habits/Time Management, Keyboarding/Typing, Library Media/Research Skills, Web Safety/Internet Safety, Coding Basics, Foundational Computer Skills. 1. Computer Literacy is a 20 Week course offering. 2. Grading is based on but not limited to: a. Homework –given periodically every week and is listed on my homework page b. Good School Habits- based on organization, following directions, using their assignment notebook, keeping their locker organized, getting various sheets signed. c. Assessments- examples: Vocabulary quizzes, Mid Term, Final Assessments i. Quia (an online assessment tool): Use this great website to prepare for assessments. Students will be required to spend time on this site each week to prepare themselves for the aforementioned assessments. d. Projects- both group and individual designed to enhance their experience at the Middle School. (use Google Drive in Google Apps. – i.e. PowerPoint, word, excel) e. Progress reports- reports will be available as per Aspen at the 5 week and 10 week reporting periods. Additionally, student assessment/project/homework grades will be made available in Aspen in a timely manner. Please check Aspen often and contact the teacher with questions/concerns. f. Weekly Reflections– a chart given out to be fill out by students every week (quarter 1 only) to be reviewed and signed by parents. g. Handouts- Almost all of my handouts and items distributed in class can be found on my webpage. h. Search for Mr. Michalek’s Page or Mr. Farnan‘s and book mark it at home!
Student will need a binder/folder for this class. Not to worry if students do not have access to the internet at home, I will allow for ample time to complete any online work and most of my work can be completed in class.
