Course Objectives and Content The Science 8 curriculum is intended to help students develop a positive attitude toward science through scientific inquiry and examination of basic concepts, principles, laws and theories. Students are encouraged to think critically, and to examine the impact of scientific knowledge on their lives, society, and the environment. By the end of Science 8, the student should be well prepared for further education in science and for their adult lives. Course Content: Core Competencies Communication: impart and exchange information, experiences and ideas, explore the surrounding world, effectively engage the use of digital media Thinking: knowledge, skills and processes associated with creative and critical thinking Personal and Social: positive personal and cultural identity, personal and social responsibilities Big Ideas Introduction o Safety and Scientific Method Life processes are performed at the cellular level o characteristics of life o cell theory and types of cells o photosynthesis and cellular respiration o relationship of micro-organisms with living things o basic functions of the immune system o vaccination and antibiotics o impacts of epidemics and pandemics on human populations Behaviour of matter can be explained by KMT and Atomic Theory o Kinetic Molecular Theory o Atomic Theory and models o protons, neutrons and quarks o electrons and leptons Energy can be transferred as both a particle and a wave o types and effects of electro-magnetic radiation o light o properties o behaviours o ways of sensing Plate Tectonic Theory is the unifying theory that explains Earth's geological processes o plate tectonic movement o major geological events of local significance o First Peoples knowledge of o local geological formations o significant local geological events o layers of the Earth
Evaluation Approximate weightings for term marks will be as follows: Tests and quizzes 60% Classwork, homework, labs and projects 40% There may be a final assessment (worth 10-15%) at the end of the course. Equipment & Supplies Textbook (Science Connections 8) – classroom resource only Three ring binder with looseleaf paper and dividers Pens, pencils, coloured pencils, ruler, eraser Other supplies such as graph paper or a calculator may be required at various times during the term. Missed and Late Assignments: Students are responsible for all material covered and assignments handed in. In the case of excused absences, students are expected to write any missed quizzes or tests during the next test make-up session. All assignments will be handed in on time. Exam Re-writes: There are no re-writes for exams. Ask questions. If you don’t understand something, ask for help!
