Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. ~ Albert Einstein
Overview
Materials
Students learn by attaching meaning to what they do, and they need to construct their own meaning of mathematics. This meaning is best developed when learners encounter mathematical experiences that proceed from the simple to the complex and from the concrete to the abstract. Students need to explore problemsolving situations in order to develop personal strategies and become mathematically literate. They must realize that it is acceptable to solve problems in a variety of ways and that a variety of solutions may be acceptable.
Students will be responsible for the following materials: • • • • •
Essential Understandings Grade Five • • • • • • • •
Patterns and Equations Whole Numbers Multiplying and Dividing Measurement Fractions and Decimals Geometry Statistics and Probability Transformations
Grade Six • • • • • • • •
Patterns and Equations Understanding Numbers Decimals Angles and Polygons Fractions, Ratios, and Percent Geometry and Measurement Data Analysis and Probability Transformations
Communication of Student Learning Summative Assessment will be organized into four strands that are reported upon on each term report: n n n n

Teacher Remarks Throughout grade 5/6 students will be increasingly challenged to push their thinking in new directions. Students will be expected to recognize their own strengths and advocate for using them when demonstrating their learning. I will encourage all of my students to effectively communicate their understandings, set and pursue challenging and realistic goals, and be open to taking smart risks and considering diverse perspectives. A student-centered, teacher-guided, and family-supported learning environment will be best maintained through open, honest, and timely communication. I encourage students and parents to make immediate contact if a question or concern should arise so that we can together seek understanding and clarification. I am a believer in all my students and am excited to learn every day alongside each one of them, “striving to be the best that we can be!”
