A 21-day tour and program, explore Ethiopia’s legendary Blue Nile, ancient monasteries, and rock-hewn churches. From country-sides to cities, feel the diversity of ADDIS ABABA, BAHIR DAR, GONDAR, LALIBELA, ARBAMINCH, JINKA, HAMER, TURMI, NAZRETH, HARAR and DIRE DAWA! Sprinkled with cultural treats, Ethiopian coffee ceremonies and unique music and dancing traditions await your participation. Welcome to Ethiopia’s Valley of the Sun! Day 1. Arrival and transfer to Hotel Up on arrival, meet our representative and check into your hotel. After a short rest, enjoy a welcoming lunch and coffee ceremony. We will rest more and later in the day, enjoy an optional tour to an ethnographic museum. Continue to rest or attend briefings on Ethiopian history from Addis Ababa University. Evening: Served in a traditional restaurant, a lovely dinner awaits your arrival, accompanied by cultural dance. Day 2. Addis Ababa Brace yourself as we visit the largest open Air Market, “Merkato”! On this day you will have an over-view of Ethiopia’s many traditional dance forms. One-day training included!

Day 3. Fly to Axum Morning after breakfast, transfer to airport and fly to the ancient town of Axum, where once stood, in the shadow of the ancient Mediterranean, the powercenter of a thriving African Kingdom. Following an afternoon lunch break, take a city tour including the stunning stele of Axum, the palace and the bath of the Queen of Sheba! Added sites include the Cathedral St. Mary of Zion (in which the Ark of the Covenant is preserved), a modern cathedral, archeological museum, and visit ruins of the Royal Palace. Day 4. Excursion to Adowa and Yeha On this day, we will drive to the 5th century BC ruins of Yeha Temple and explore Adowa Mountain, the battle field of the First Italian-Ethiopian War towards securing Ethiopian sovereignty. We will drive back to Axum and be welcomed into a chosen local household. Here, we will share cultures and receive hands-on demonstration in preparing Ambasha (Traditional Bread) and Shero wot, a typical Ethiopian traditional stew. Day 5. Fly to Lalibela Morning after breakfast fly to the legendary and medieval capital town of Lalibela. Lalibela is famous for its remarkable monolith rock-hewn churches. After check into your hotel, visit the most memorable worship places of Christianity on the African continent. Traditional dinner will be served in an old, Abyssinia traditional restaurant followed by traditional music. Enjoy the typical traditional Lalibela cultural dances of Sora or Eskesta. Here, you will have a chance to participate in the performance! Day 6.

Visit to Asheten Mariam Churches Morning after breakfast, you will ride mules through the beautiful landscape of Lalibela’s Mountains! You will visit the magnificent Asheten Mariam churches situated nearby on the top hills of Lalibela. After our lunch break, traditional coffee will be served in local households. Here, you will get chance to see traditional coffee preparation process and observe the typical local coffee ceremony. After dinner, you will be guests to the famous Azemari bet and experience typical traditional music while tasting the local drinks of Tela and Tej.

Day 7.

Gonder Morning drive to Gondar, which is the site of ancient castle building palaces of different emperors constructed in the European middle-age architectural style. On the way, witness the breathtaking scenery of different landscapes and rural villages, including small local towns of Welo and Gonder. We will take lunch at a local restaurant in Azezo.

On this day you will visit the curious architectural representations of the Camelot of Africa”, the iconic bath of King Fasilledes- still in use Epiphany, Timket. After dinner in restaurants, “4 Sisters” enjoy

symbiosis of Ethiopian and Portuguese royal enclosure, also known as” the church of Debre Birehan Selassie, and for the colorful celebration of Ethiopian one of the famous traditional typical Gonderine style dances (Eseketa).

Day 9.

Bahirdar Visit Bahirdar. On the way, you will visit traditional farmlands and different rural villages of Gojam. We will visit the Awramaba community and learn their way of life and modern community administration (where male and female have equal role in the community), meet the founder of the community (Mr. Zumra Nuru), and observe traditional/cultural life cycles. Here you will also see how Injera (Ethiopia’s natio nal pancake) is prepared and participate in the baking process! Visit Lake Tana and Blue Nile Morning after breakfast, take Boat ride on Lake Tana- the largest lake in Ethiopia! Lake Tana is situated among lots of ancient and valuable monastery’s and religious relics. On this day you will visit Azua-Mariam and Ura-kidane Mihret, monasteries rich in icon painting. After our lunch break, drive about 30km on a-graveled road to visit the famous Blue Nile Falls (Tis essat) and trace the sources of the Blue Nile River! We will end our perfect day with dinner in one of the famous Desert or Lake Shore restaurants.

Day 10.

Drive back to Addis Ababa

Early morning, you will take a scenic drive back to Addis. En route, we will visit some of the beautiful villages and the famous Blue Nile Gorge, which rivals the American Grand Canyon- Have your cameras charged and ready!

Day 11.

Drive Addis Ababa – Sodo Morning drive through the fertile land of the southern region to visit Tiya stele fiel d UNESCO world heritage site, stopping at typical Gurage and Halba villages along the way.

Day 12.

Arbaminch- visit Dorze Tribe In the morning, drive more south to Arbaminch. Before we reach Arbaminch, we will ascend to Guge mountain to visit the very famous tribes of Dorze, where you will find magnificent beehive shaped huts, diverse banana cultivations and an amazing weaving culture! Here you will see and participate in their traditional dances, observe the traditional Kocho baking and preparation ceremony, and taste traditional food, kocho and the local drink called Areke. Overnight Stay in a very traditional hut!

Day 13. Day 14.

Drive to Turmi and visit the Hammer Tribe

After breakfast, drive from Arbaminch to Turmi via Konso. On the way, you will visit TSEMAY Village at Weyto. Our road journey continues to Turmi. Here we will visit the Hamer village and participate in traditional night dancing of Hammer Tribe (Evangadi).

Day 15.

Turmi-Dimeka market -Turmi Morning after breakfast, drive to the colorful market of Dimeka which is attended by different tribes including Hammer, Bena and Tsemay. If you are lucky enough, you will see the bull jumping Ceremony (the rite of passage to Manhood for Hamer and Bena Tribes)! Witness the preparation of local coffee from the shells of coffee beans. Day 16. Turmi- Arbaminch On this day, we’re back on the road to Arbaminch. Along the way, we’ll visit Konso villages and meet their King. Konso people are hardworking and famous for their traditional land management, which is a registered heritage site by UNESCO. Here you will visit the villages of Gamole or Mecheke, taste local drinks called Cheka (made up of local cereal), and then ride back to Arbaminch for our Overnight stay. Day 17. Arbaminch – Nazeret Morning after breakfast you will drive to Nazeret, one of the fastest growing business and conference cities. On the way, you will pass through the main rift valley routes and visit the rift valley’s Lake Ziway.

Day 18. Nazeret – Harar After breakfast, you will drive to Harar, the 4 st holiest city of Islam and an important trading centre famous for its ancient buildings and great city walls. A great learning-center of Muslim scholarship, the town has 99 mosques! The city is well known for its superb handicrafts, including woven textiles, basket and silverwares.

Day 19.

Exploring Harar Today you will discover Harar! Explore the city walls and narrow streets, lined with traditional Harari houses and the Rimbaud House- a fine building/traditional house dating from the period when French poet, Rimbaud, lived in Harar. We will also visit the Harari Museum. As evening falls, witness the local men attract wild hyenas to the city in a bizarre spectacle, as they bravely feed these dangerous scavengers!

Day 20.

Harare – Dire Dawa – Harar Morning you will drive to dire Dawa and visit the desert queen city of Dire Dawa. Famous for its Kezira and Kafira Markets, the city was founded in 1902 when the railroad from Djibouti reached the area. Its growth has resulted largely from trade brought by the railroad. In the afternoon, drive back to Harar and see chat field and market. Ethiopia boasts beautiful and natural cultural life-styles. You will visit one old house-hold where you will witness the typical life of Harari people.

Day 21.

Harar - Addis Ababa Morning after breakfast, drive back to Addis through Ethio-Djibouti road and rest. In the evening, you are a welcomed and special guest of Omo Tours where you will be treated at one of Ethiopia’s famous, traditional restaurants. After taking enough traditional food and drink, take i n more of the major cultural dances of Ethiopia’s diverse tribal cultures. Alas, depending on your flight schedule, you will rest one more night and/or or be transferred to the airport for your departure back home.

Undergraduate Credit Option for College/High-school Students & Educators! This is an academic-bearing program, earning transferable CSU/UC or High School credit. Registration and enrollment in “Introspective Global Dance Studies” Summer session 2017 is required. Course fees must be paid separately to Laney College. 6-DAY KENYAN SAFARI OPTION Day 1: Arrival- Nairobi Arrive Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Hotel check-in/relax. Leisure in Nairobi, options open Day 2: Nairobi- Aberdares: Breakfast at hotel/safari briefing and depart for the Aberdares, a beautiful mountain range in the central highlands of Kenya with high mountains, dense rain forest, thickets of bamboo, rushing rivers, cascading waterfalls, abundant birdlife, rare monkeys. Spot elephants, leopards, and lions sipping water from a forest waterhole, from a vantage-point high in the forest. Make stops en route at local Thika Town, Karatina market. Check-in at club/lodge for lunch, evening relaxation/optional activity. Dinner and overnight stay Day 3: Aberdares-Lake Elementaita: At the foot of the Rift Valley Escarpment, this lake hosts hundreds of thousands of enthralling flamingos, pelicans and crested grebe. Zebra, gazelle, eland and warthog can be seen grazing on the shores of the lake. Lake Elementaita is the only breeding ground for the great white Pelican in Kenya. Lunch and game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. Return for dinner and overnight stay Day 4: Lake Elementaita- Masai Mara: Breakfast at the lodge. Depart for Masai Mara National Reserve is perhaps the only region left in Kenya where the visitor may see animals in the same super-abundance as existed a century ago. Masai Mara has over 450 species of birds. One has to explore the plains and rolling hills for a chance to spot the elephant, black-manned lion, leopard, buffalo, cheetah, and diverse species of hoofed animals. Arrive at the camp, check-in/lunch. Afternoon game drive, dinner and overnight stay. Day 5: Masai Mara: Full day game-viewing in the reserve- over 450 species of birds and abundant large mammal species. Explore the plains and rolling hills for a chance to spot the images of your dreams ranging from beautiful scenery to fascinating views of wildlife, in a natural habitat. All meals and overnight at the camp. Day 6: Masai Mara- Lake Naivasha: Breakfast at lodge, depart for Lake Naivasha at the foot of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment. An important horticultural area of Kenya, Lake Naivasha is a diverse bird and animal habitat. Colobus monkeys are often seen in the canopy of the Acacia forests around the lake, and on the north shore of the lake, Buffalo, Waterbuck and Eland are often seen grazing. After lunch, rest for the day. Optional: Boat ride/nature walk on Crescent Island; hike/bike at Hell's gate National Park (add’l fee). Dinner and overnight stay. Day 7: Lake Naivasha- Nairobi departure day: After breakfast, morning drive to Kenya's colorful capital city, Nairobi. Excursion to Nairobi National Park where a variety of wildlife can be seen including large herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe roaming the plains, black rhino, ostrich, baboons, cheetah and lions! Cameras out for our photogenic inhabitants. Lunch at restaurant, Museum and Giraffe Centre. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your outbound flight.

More than a Safari, learn about Africa’s challenges and conservation contradictions between land, people, government, tourism and nature’s inhabitants- from the local people’s perspective. WHO WE ARE We, at the Ethiopian and Eritrean Unity Club (EEUC), strive to create an atmosphere of positivity and encouragement to inspire students to reach for the stars. We do this by remedying the disconnect between those who have recently come to the United States and those who were either born here, or those who moved to the states a long time ago. We believe that by creating a community of people who support and encourage each other to be their best, this makes it easier to dream big.

WHY STUDY ABROAD WITH US? This global education opportunity is a collaboration between the Department of Dance and the Ethiopian & Eritrean Unity Club at Laney College. You will be taking part of a historic moment in Peralta’s history by traveling with the Ethiopian & Eritrean Unity Club’s first student club/faculty-led trip to Ethiopia from Laney College.



This is an academic-bearing study abroad program. Earn 5 transferable credits for transfer!



Ethiopia is a country, rich in history and culture and has been able to protect its culture from Western Colonialism.



If nothing else, the food alone is worth traveling to Ethiopia. The delicious food, called Injera and Wot, has been served in Ethiopia for centuries. It is so flavorful you can almost taste the history!
