Help untangle the role of the college administration, the faculty and the student body in this poignant journey. (Look for more Veterans’ conversation on Saturday.) Retirement: A Blessing or a Curse?—Robert Ryder, MD ‘Retirement’ defines an increasing proportion of human life and activity, but the quality of that life can vary dramatically. Charlotte “Chickie” Sibley proudly celebrates her 50th Reunion, grateful for the impact Middlebury has had on her life. Originally intending to be a professor of French Literature, she changed career plans after a summer internship on Wall Street, and pursued an MBA at the University of Chicago—one of 10 women in the class of 300. She spent her career in the biopharmaceutical industry, leading insights and analytics departments, and ultimately, heading up leadership development. Her liberal arts foundation at Middlebury prepared her to be a good analyst and a better communicator and leader. She now serves on the board of directors for several for-profit

private companies, and is honored to serve as chair of the board of Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia, a frequent performer with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Charlotte was named Woman of the Year in 2008 by the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association for her leadership and mentoring. Axinn , Abernethy Frank Pallone is celebrating his 45th Reunion. A double major in history and French, Frank has dedicated his career to public service. Frank started in the City Council and quickly moved into the NJ State Senate and has devoted the past three decades to the House of Representatives for New Jersey’s Sixth District. Pallone is the Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, with jurisdiction over energy, environment, health care, commerce, and telecommunications issues. Frank played a major role in The Affordable Care Act and the Toxic Substances Control Act. He led democratic efforts to pass the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) of 2016 and as well as advocating to protect the integrity of the Medicare guarantee and Medicaid programs, ensure food safety, strengthen the federal Superfund program to clean up toxic waste sites, strengthen the nation’s clean water laws, and protect our shores against the threat of offshore drilling. Wilson Hall

Corey Reich is celebrating his 10th reunion, a date he wasn’t sure he’d reach. After experiencing weakness in his arms and legs, Corey was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in July 2007 after his junior year. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with a life expectancy of 2–5 years. Given the uncertainty of disease progression, doctors advised him against returning to Middlebury. There was no way Corey was going to miss his senior year. After graduating, Corey returned home to Piedmont, CA. Corey and his family learned about ALS Therapy Development Institute, the world’s largest nonprofit biotech focused 100 percent on ALS research, soon after diagnosis and began fundraising. With the unfathomable support of family and friends, Corey has raised $8 million. Corey is in his 10th year of coaching the women’s and men’s varsity tennis teams at his former high school, Piedmont, and loves it.
