Marionville School Reunion June 23, 24, 25, 1972 Marionville, . Missouri
'J.....
r
'Deoicate ... ••• this book to you, the former students and teachers, who have made this event possible.
For,
without one we could not have had the other.
It is believed that there was a log cabin school in Marionville in the 1840's but no record can be tound. The first record of a school was in 1860; school was held then at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which stood on what Is now the corner of Centfal and Lincoln (ZZ Highway). The first brick school building was constructed in .. 1885. On May 3. 1889 a contract was given to M. Benjamin and D. p • .Lt,.Vo'\.l.IfV~ Russell for lI .fl $3,500.00 addition to the school. This building was torn down lrl:J.t§U9.....and a new one erected in 1911, which burned to the ~
\ c; \\
ground on March 3, 1923.
The present buUding was buUt in 1923-24.
Later additions were the Home Economics cottage in 1939, the primary buUding in 1949, a new football field in the tall of 1950, the new gymnasium In 1953. A new football field was made ready for use in 196566. Located. at Fisk and Lawrence streets, it is the best playing field in the Midwest Conference. In 1968 additional classrooms and a cafeteria was added to the existing buildings. Old records show that in 1888 there was a principal and four teachers: Principal J. W. Barton and teachers O. E. Gorman, Sallie Poor, Mate Grover and Rhoda Jamison. They taught an 8-month school year, the principal re ceiving $75.00 monthly, one teacher $40.00 monthly and the others each $30.00 monthly. Checking back into old records of May 15, 1889, there were 254 boys and 240 girls enrolled · in school; total capacity that could be seated was 534. The average cost per day for tuition of each scholar was .036. From a total school enrollment in 1888 of approximately 490 to a present enrollment of over 700 through 1972, from five teachers then to thirty-eight now , ' from two graduate s in 1894 to our largest graduating class of forty-eight in 1971, we have continued to grow. We have been fortunate over the years in having capable local citizens serving on our school boards and able and dedicated superintendents, principals and teachers. Present superintendent Is Darrel Boyer. Each tormer student of Marionvllie High School will have memories of his own particular era as it pertains to the honors in sports, mUSiC, home economics, agriculture, etc. Our present trophy cases, located in the hallway between the high school building and the gym .. nasium, are evidence of our continuing activities. Mention of our school would not be complete without recognition of the Marionville Collegiate Institute, established in 1872. Jasper A. Smith became its tirst president in 1873. The administration buUding, which still stands, was built in 1907.. The Marionvllie Collegiate institute was organized by the Lawrence County Teachers Association for the training of teachers. It was later taken over by the Methodist Church and operated by them until it. was moved to Carthage in 1924. In 1925 a home tor the aged was established and the college buildings put to use. Turrentine Hall and the main administration buUding have been modernized and sUll stand in use. New buildings have been built, cottages and courts have been buUt In the area occupied by Burge dormitory and the athletic field. The latest addition was a Health Center completed in 1961 and an addition to it completed in 1971, bringing it to a 60-bed facility. Now known as The Ozarks Methodist Manor, the administrator 1s Forest E. Delozier.
As you loOk at the pages of this souvenir book, the first reunion of Marionville School will either be In the past or fast moving to a close. For many of us, il may be the only one of its kind we wUI be fortunate enough to attend. For the former students not so far in the past and for the many in the future, we hope It wUl be the beglnn1ng of • tradition.
To point out anyone person or group of persons as being responsible for our reunion success would be both impossible and unfair. To thank each and every one who aSSisted would be equally impossible. But it is possible' to mention the individual class chairmen who spent many hours of their time on a few: deta1l workj those who served on varjous committees, those who worked by phone, walked many steps, drove many mUes; those who often compromised their own plans and ideas in order to go along with the majority; those who not only readUy agreed with me in many ways but also those wbo just as readily pointed out my missteps; the many interested local citizens and the many family members in the background who flOOre with us"; to my own sponsoring Class of 1941 who so graciously stood by me all the way - - to all these and many more, words w1ll not express the thanks for making my place in this reunion a most memorable and enjoyable one. - - - - - NADINE GREENE

Claire Whiles Forrester, Class oU906, is as far as known, the oldest living graduate of Marionville High School and the only living member of the Class of 1906. She has recently stated, that if all of her organs function as well as her tongue, she will live to be 150. Married to Efton Forrester April 16, 1908; they had three sons, the oldest died in infancy. Max Forrester was born September 11,1914, and Don Forrester was born April 26, 1921. There are three grandsons and two great grandsons. Just think what a sUr there w1l1 be when a girl shows up along that family lineage I Most of Claire's remembrances are mostly of the mischievous anUcs which apply to all students sometime or other. She does recall Professor Woodford telling her what a great potential she had U she would only apply it. So far, Claire says, she hasn't found out Just what that potential was or 11 sbe has applied It I

A GOOD-NIGHT Close now thine eyes and rest secure; Thy soul is safe enough, thy body sure; He that loves thee, He that keeps And guards thee, never slumbers, never sleeps. The smiling conscience in a sleeping breast Has only peace, has only rest; The music and the mirth of kings Are all but very discords; when she sings; Then close thine eyes and rest secure; No sleep so sweet as thine, no rest so sure. - Francis Quarles

Note:
In 1915 Marionville had its first four-year high school. Up until that time it had been a three-year high school. Thus, a few of the names will be repeated in the years following 1914 for those who returned to complete their four-year course.
