~ You are a famous statistician and your task is to research a certain topic of interest. Use the following steps to insure success. HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK 1. Think of a Question that you are Interested in Knowing People's Response: Question must be school appropriate Must be a statistical question (and answer must be numbers NOT categories)
Example: How many hours do you sleep? (this would be a good question because your answer would be a number, not a category) What is your favorite color? (this would NOT be a good question because your answer would be a category, not a number)
Your question must be approved by your teacher 2. Create
40
Questionnaire cards for the people being surveyed: (TYPED)
Must be typed on the computer and cut out very neatly (all cards must be the same size) 3. Gather your Data: Ask 40 people in the school to participate in your survey and fill out your questionnaire. **We will do this in an organized way as a class** Do NOT discard these sheets.....They will be part of the final project! 4. Write an Introduction Paragraph: (TYPED) *see sample paragraph in resource packet* Must have a title (“your question”) Must be typed in a readable font style and color Paragraph one….Describe who you surveyed, when they were surveyed, & where they were surveyed. Paragraph two..Describe how they were surveyed. (Prompt will be given to use, if needed) Be careful with grammar and spelling errors 5. Create a Frequency Table: (TYPED) *see how to create one in resource packet* Must have a title (“your question”) Must have bottom row be total Must have a category column, tally column, & frequency column Must be created using the computer 6. Find the Measure of Central Tendencies:
(TYPED) *See “measure of central tendencies” sheet in resource packet*
Must have a title (“your question”) List all 40 pieces of data in order from least to greatest at the top of the page Find the mean of your data set (show all work and explain in words how you got your answer) Find the median of your data set (show all work and explain in words how you got your answer) Find the mode of your data set (show all work and explain in words how you got your answer) Find the range of your data set (show all work and explain in words how you got your answer) Must be completed using the computer and fit all on one page including work
7. Create a Line Plot: (TYPED) *see how to create one in resource packet* Must have a title (“your question”) Use a number line (x-axis) x axis must be labeled x’s are placed above a number to represent how often a value appears in data set Must be completed using the computer 8. Create a Histogram: (by HAND neatly on graph paper w/ruler) *see details in resource packet Must have a title (“your question”) Must label x & y axis Label intervals along x axis Frequencies along y axis must count by appropriate number Bars must all be the same width and touching each other. They must be colored neatly! Graph must be NEATLY done by hand on graph paper using a ruler. You may only use the computer for title and labels, if you wish. 9. Create a Box and Whiskers Plot:
(by HAND neatly on graph paper w/ruler) *see details in resource packet Must have a title (“your question”) Use a number line (x-axis) x axis must be labeled List and label at top of plot: minimum value, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, & maximum value Plot must be NEATLY done by hand on graph paper using a ruler. You may only use the computer for title and labels, if you wish.
10. Complete a Summary Sheet: (TYPED) Must have a title (“your question”) Must be typed in a readable font style and color Question/Answer sheet will be provided for you to complete Must be completed using the computer 11. Assemble your Booklet in the Following Order:
Cover (must have question, teacher name, class period, and your name) (typed) Introduction Paragraph (typed) Frequency Table (typed) Measure of Central Tendencies (typed) Line Plot (typed) Histogram (by hand) Box and Whiskers Plot (by hand) Summary Sheet (typed) Collection of Data Questionnaires- on 2 pages in collage form
