DEPUTY SHERIFF/CORONER I/II/III SALARY: Beginning ANNUAL salary paid: DEPUTY SHERIFF/CORONER I- $35,604. DEPUTY SHERIFF/CORONER II-$37,384. DEPUTY SHERIFF/CORONER III-$39,253.

JOB OPPORTUNITY AND APPLICATION: There are current vacancies for the positions of Deputy Sheriff Coroner I/II/III for the Del Norte County Sheriff's Department. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies and temporary help for up to one year. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Deputy Sheriff/Coroner I/II: Patrol the county roads and waterways to prevent crime and to protect life and property of county residents. Respond to radio messages, telephone instructions, and/or citizen requests to appear at scenes of disorder or crime. Conducts preliminary investigations of thefts, burglaries, robberies, deaths, assaults, accidents, and other disturbances. Make arrests law violators and performs physical searches of subject. Prepare a variety of reports and other record keeping documents such as arrest and investigation reports. Testify in court in connection with criminal prosecution. Serve a variety of legal papers and documents. Transport inmates to appropriate locations. Assure the preservation of criminal evidence until it is properly collected or recorded. Participate in Coroner investigations, insuring that evidence is not disturbed, sealing residences, assisting in determining cause of death, securing personal property, and acting as a witness at autopsies. Participate in public search and rescue duties and performs higher level duties in a training capacity. Deputy Sheriff/Coroner III: In addition to the above duties, supervise in a lead person or training capacity and participates in field patrol operations and activities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Deputy Sheriff/Coroner I - Certificate of Completion of an accredited POST Academy. Possession of valid California Driver’s License and first aid and CPR certificates. Must be 21 years or older at the time of appointment as a peace officer. Deputy Sheriff/Corner II: In addition to the above requirements, one year experience as a Deputy Sheriff/Coroner I and ability to obtain POST Intermediate certification within time limits specified by departmental policy. Deputy Sheriff/Corner III: In addition to the above requirements, three years experience as a Deputy Sheriff/Coroner II and ability to obtain POST Advanced certification within the time limits specified by departmental policy. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in both quiet and noisy environments, with occasional work performed in confined spaces. Temperature extremes vary depending on seasonal exposures. There is exposure to body fluids and infectious agents including blood borne viruses, which can produce chronic disease or death. An exposure also exists to hazardous materials, illicit drugs and dust and airborne particles. Equipment used and tasks performed present a high risk of body injuries (cuts, bruises, sprains, fractures). PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Hearing: Adequate to hear and understand conversations in both quiet and noisy environments with the ability to localize from which direction a sound is coming. Must be able to discriminate among both speech and non-speech sounds, e.g., to hear and correctly understand individuals being interviewed, to hear and correctly understand radio transmission while operating a motorized vehicle, to hear scuffling, opening and closing of doors or firearms being loaded in order to determine safe entry or exit of a situation or building and to detect the approach of vehicles, people, animals, machinery and to anticipate potentially unsafe situations. Vision: Adequate to meet DMV criteria for required licensing. Accuracy in far vision is very important such as to determine whether someone twenty feet away is holding a gun or a non-weapon item. If an officer who wears corrective lenses loses his/her glasses or lenses, the officer must have adequate uncorrected visions to find his/her vehicle, holster, radio or partner. Accurate color vision is necessary to properly describe evidence, situations, suspects and/or vehicles. Coordination & Dexterity: Arm strength and range of motion is sufficient to write, use firearms, subdue and handcuff suspects. Coordination and explosive strength to sprint in emergency situations and be able to communicate and perform tasks at the end of the situation. Finger dexterity and arm-hand steadiness adequate to search individuals and/or facility. Must have ability to move arms or legs rapidly such as to use weaponless defense and weapons. Physical Strength: Must have strength to lift, push, pull and carry heavy objects, such as to move furniture, open heavy metal doors, move injured or unconscious or assist an uncooperative and combative individual. Trunk strength and stamina for repeated activities is necessary.

• COMPENSATION: In addition to the salaries listed below, shift differentials are paid to those employees working "swing" or "graveyard" shifts; a 2½% education incentive differential for employees with an AA degree, 5% education incentive differential for employees with a BA degree. Appointment will be made at the first step of the salary range. Appointee shall serve a 12-month probationary period before being classified as permanent. CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, Del Norte County is required to verify, within three days of employment of any person, that he/she is: 1) a citizen or national of the United States; 2) an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence or authorized by the Immigration and Naturalization Service to work in the United States. BENEFITS: A generous package of benefits is provided, including: health, dental, and vision care benefits, life insurance, and a retirement plan. Paid annual leave: Vacation- 5 working days the first year; after one year of service - 10 working days per year; after 5 years of continuous service - 15 working days per year; after 10 years - 20 working days per year; after 15 years - 25 working days per year. Floating Holidays- 3 working days each fiscal year. Sick Leave- 12 working days each year with unrestricted accumulation. Holidays – 13 each year which are paid in addition to basic salary. Retirement: The county is a member of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) integrated with Social Security. Group Insurance: County pays a portion of employee's group health, dental, vision and life insurance premiums with dependent health and dental care benefits available at group rates. Voluntary Deferred Compensation Plan: Employees may elect to have a percentage of their salary deferred for pre-tax investment. DEL NORTE COUNTY: Del Norte County is located in the northwest corner of California on a singularly beautiful portion of California's Northcoast in the heart of the Redwood Forest. The Smith and Klamath Rivers, two of the best salmon and steelhead fishing streams on the Pacific Coast, flow into the ocean within the County's boundaries. The climate is mild throughout the year, with winter daytime temperatures averaging 40-50 degrees, and in the summer 60-70 degrees; average rainfall is approximately 80 inches. Warmer weather is available within 10 miles of the shoreline along the scenic Smith River. Crescent City is situated on the coast 20 minutes south of the Oregon border and is the county seat. The population of the county is approximately 27,000.
