JOB DESCRIPTION Position: DIRECTOR OF RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS Position Classification: Exempt (full time w/ benefits) Reports To: Executive Director POSITION SCOPE: Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Resource Development & Communications will provide leadership in the planning, directing, and implementing of all fund development and communication efforts. The individual works closely with the President/CEO, Board of Managers and key stakeholders to plan and execute resource development and communication/marketing strategies and monitor progress. The Director of Resource Development & Communications is tasked with substantially generating new resources for the organization by cultivating and soliciting gifts and grants from individuals, corporations, foundations, government agencies and others; and is responsible for managing the overall administrative needs relating to resource development. Working with other members of the Leadership team, the Director of Resource Development & Communications develops and implements communications strategies to reach wide audiences. We are seeking a creative, hard-working, mission-driven, productive individual who can maximize the opportunities created by the effectiveness of Boys & Girls Club of New Haven’s programs. RESPONSIBILITIES: Directs and manages all development activities, including annual fund and special appeals, capital and/or special gift campaigns, donor recognition, planned giving, constituency building and cultivation as well as all fund development aspects of special events in order to strengthen the base of support to sustain the agency's operations and long-term stability. Charged with leading the execution of the Great Futures Campaign for Kids, a 5-year, 1 million dollar, capacity building campaign. Creates long-range and short-term goals and plans for fund development with measurable outcomes and objectives. Develops relationships with the Board of Managers and volunteers and develops and nurtures their fund development and communications capabilities. Enlists and motivates board members and other volunteers to participate in fundraising activities and advocate for the organization and its programs. Works as staff liaison to the Resource Development, Marketing/ Communication and Special Events committees of the Board of Managers. Maintain and increase the Major Donor base by managing an ongoing Donor Identification, Cultivation, and Recognition Program for Major Gifts and Multi-Year Giving Society Individuals. Maintain and increase individual, corporate, foundation, civic and faith-based support (both cash and inkind) by identifying and cultivating relationships with current and prospective donors. Responsible for managing donor database. Plan and implement special fundraising events and steward donors. Build awareness of BGCNH through public media outlets that target a variety of audiences, including elected officials, other policy makers, opinion influencers and academics, the general public, and both public and private funders to maximize BGCNH’s visibility.

Develops fund development materials, publications, programs and events that will increase the visibility of the organization, its activities and children's issues. Including but not limited to, social media updates and management, press release creation and distribution, website content management. Plan and coordinate all foundation grant seeking, and sponsorship activities. Oversees the ongoing maintenance of these relationships with the help of appropriate staff, board, or volunteers.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Bachelor's Degree in a marketing/communications or related discipline required. At least five years of experience in fund development, plus an understanding of marketing/communications principles as applied to a not-for-profit organization. Excellent relationship building skills and ability to understand the needs and interests of donors. Proven success and knowledge of fund development practices as well as an understanding of communication/marketing principles. Experience with donor identification, cultivation, recognition programs, annual fund coordination, direct mail, grant research/writing, planned giving, event planning, strategic planning, and budget development. Proven experience with accountability for providing strategic communications. Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to tailor messaging for various audiences. The ability to write and/or edit appeals, newsletter copy, etc. Some technical skills in digital communications, design and production skills, video, media relations. Strong analytical as well as sound time management and planning skills. Proven organizational skills, ability to work in a fast paced environment and to coordinate and handle multiple tasks. Proficient in Microsoft office. Facility with and understanding of managing a fund-raising database. Demonstrated commitment to positive youth development and children’s issues. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office. Ability and willingness to work with a diverse population. Salary: Commensurate with experience; fundraising incentives negotiable.
