“Autumn….the year’s last, loveliest smile.” William Cullen Bryant Autumn is definitely a favorite time of year. The students have settled into the routine of school. The teachers are making progress in teaching their standards. Learning is taking place in the classrooms and the extracurricular activities are in full swing. It sure does make me proud to be a Wildcat! I’d like to use this forum to update you on a few district procedures we often take for granted and assume our parents and community know. Our newsletter is posted quarterly on the school website at http://www.minsterschools.org. If you want to receive an email reminder with a link when a new quarterly newsletter is posted, please send an email to:

[email protected]. Include your name and address along with your request. The school menus are always available by going to the school website and then clicking on ‘Lunch Menus’ on the left side of the screen. The most recent lunch menu and the current prices are found here. We have also added the times for each lunch period at this location. If you need to schedule an appointment for your child, lunch time is a good time to do so. The sports schedules can also be found on the website by clicking ‘Athletics Info/Schedule.’ These schedules are constantly updated and show changes as they occur. New this year for our winter sports season ticket holders will be an opportunity to subscribe to a school messenger list that will be used to notify you of any weather related game cancellations. As you buy your tickets, please include the telephone number to be called in the event of a JV/Varsity sport cancellation. School messenger telephone calls are used to notify our student’s listed contacts in the event of a school emergency. We use this for any kind of weather delay or early release. The school messenger system will try calling each listed number multiple times before leaving the important message. If you see a missed call, please know you will get called again or you can check our website, Twitter or Facebook for the same information. From The Principal’s Desk / Mr. Mike Lee CURRICULUM
Junior High students completed first round MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) in reading and mathematics the first two weeks of the school year. These assessments help our teachers identify the instructional level of the students and provides context for determining where each student is performing in relation to local and state standards. Spring 2015 assessment results have returned from the AIR (American Institute of Research) in the areas of science and social studies. Results from PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College & Careers) are also forthcoming in the areas of mathematics and language arts.
PARENT RESOURCES
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for Tuesday Nov. 3 from 5:30-8:30 P.M., and Mon. Nov. 9 from 8:00-3:30 P.M. Junior high conferences are scheduled as students were to return forms for available time frames. High school conferences can be scheduled via phone call, email, or walk-in during the times mentioned above. Parents can stay in the know about Ohio’s state tests that are forthcoming next April by visiting the 2015-16 State Tests Updates website at education.ohio.gov/Topics/Testing/2015-2016 StateTests-Updates.

Veterans Day Program Minster Schools will hold its annual Veterans Day program on Friday, November 6th in the elementary school. Coffee and doughnuts will be served to all veterans, spouses, and legion auxiliary members starting at 9:15 A.M. in the commons area. The program will begin promptly at 10 A.M. in the gymnasium, and is open to the press and general public. The program will feature performances by selected student speakers, a local color guard, elementary music classes and the Minster High School band. This year’s keynote address will be given by Mr. Anthony Bergman, a veteran who has served multiple tours of duty in the US Marine Corps since graduating from Minster High School in 2008. 8th Grade Washington D.C. Trip Our 8th Graders traveled to Washington, DC from October 19-23. It was a very successful trip to our nation's capital city, with beautiful weather. Nearly 70 students and over 20 chaperones visited the following sights: Washington Monument, Capitol Building, White House, Jefferson / Lincoln / Korean /Vietnam / WW II / FDR / MLK, Jr. Memorials, the Holocaust Museum, the Smithsonian Museums located on the National Mall, the National Archives, National Cathedral, Mount Vernon and the Gettysburg Battlefield, along with many others. It was a great trip and our students were very well behaved. A special "Thank You" to the parent-chaperons that went along this year. It couldn't be done without your assistance.

FFA MEMBERS COMPETE IN DISTRICT CONTEST The Minster FFA recently placed 3rd out of 30 teams in the District 5 FFA Rural Land and Soil Judging Contest held in Auglaize County. The rural soils contest is an educational activity designed as a practical method of teaching students to evaluate land and soil to determine its greatest safe potential use for rural, agricultural uses.
The soils pits and surrounding
areas are evaluated on the following: slope, erosion features, textures of the surface and subsurface soil, water quality, soil fertility, soil compaction and water quality. These areas then help determine land class capabilities and best use of the land for agricultural purposes with recommended conservation practices applied to each soil pit and surrounding areas. The team members in the rural soil judging contest were Pierce McGowan, Carlie Watkins, Dan Becker, Zach Heuker, Dylan Byers, Logan Lazier, and Jarod Schulze. Individually, Pierce McGowan placed 1st out of 201 competitors. The Urban Land Judging team placed 10th in the District 5 contest out of 22 teams. The urban contest is designed as a practical method of teaching students to evaluate land and soil to determine its potential use for urban, home site, and other nonfarm uses. Team members
were, Alex Oldiges, Max Pelletier, Ryan Brown, Morgan Heuker, Aaron Kitzmiller, Tony Winner, and Derek Grieshop.

From The Principal’s Desk / Mrs. Leanne Keller Curriculum Per requirements of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, all parents of students in K-3 will be informed of their child’s “on track” or “off track” status in Reading at parent teacher conferences. Students who are “off track” must have a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan, outlining intervention strategies in place and how progress is being tracked. Third grade students will take a reading achievement test in early December. This allows us to target students in need of additional intervention before students take the spring assessment, which is used to determine promotion to fourth grade. Other intervention and assessment opportunities are available for students who do not attain the required score on the spring assessment. Please contact the elementary office if you have questions about the Third Grade Reading Guarantee or what it means for your child. PARRC assessments will no longer be given to our students. Students in grades 3-8 will continue to take state achievement tests in core subject areas. These tests will be developed by AIR (American Institutes for Research). The new tests will be:
Shorter than those given last school year; Given during one testing window; and Given close to the end of the school year
Parent Resources Principal’s Advisory Committee. Mrs. Keller will again bring together an advisory committee that meets two to three times a year to discuss issues regarding curriculum, procedures, and building level concerns. Please look for a School Messenger email to come soon with the names and contact information for grade level representatives. Thanks to all who expressed interest in being on this committee! We would like to gage the level of interest our parents have in learning about Internet/Media safety and how to protect your child when they are online. Auglaize County Sheriff Deputy Sam Blank is a resource officer who works with our sixth grade students in the DARE program. He is very knowledgeable about concerns affecting child safety during technology use. Please look for a survey about your interest in learning more about this important topic. We are in need of parent volunteers for our COSI on Wheels program, which will be held Thursday, December 17th. If you signed up for this via back to school paperwork, our office will be contacting you. This is a fun day, working hands on with students in Science. The title of our program this year is Current Conditions. Please contact the office at 419-628-4174 if you are willing and able to participate.

6th Grade Trip to Camp Willson On September 22nd and 23rd, the 6th graders visited the YMCA Camp Willson in Bellefontaine for their annual overnight field trip. While at Camp Willson the 65 students participated in activities that challenged them on both academic and personal levels. The students rode horses throughout the camp, learned team-building skills in the Team Challenge, climbed a rock wall, and learned about the past and how to use a compass. In addition to these activities, the students learned and sang many traditional campfire songs and enjoyed getting to know more about one another, as well as themselves. It was an exciting experience they will remember for many years to come. Thank you to all our parent chaperons that helped to make this trip happen.

5th Grade News On Friday, September 18th, the fifth grade class had an outstanding day learning “outside the classroom”. We took a walking field trip through the streets of Minster learning about the history of our town. Mary Oldiges and Ronnie Raible led the students through the Minster Historical Society, where we learned valuable information on the German immigration movement, our study of genealogy, and we viewed the Minster Machine Company’s current exhibit.
The students also visited the Minster Bank where Connie Meiring and Kris Kuck discussed financial choices in the “What Does It Cost Now” program. They analyzed common items (movie tickets, bikes, shoes, etc.) and looked at prices 10 years ago compared to today, and estimated what these items may cost 10 years from now. A real eye opener for the students!

4th Grade News In Social Studies, the students learned about map skills, the continents, oceans, relative and absolute location, regions of Ohio and its resources. While walking to the Minster Historical Museum, Mr. Bob Lammers shared his knowledge of the Miami-Erie canal. In the museum, Mary Oldiges shared “The Minster Machine Company” exhibit and explained that for over 100 years the Minster Machine Company has put Minster on the map worldwide and immensely contributed to the betterment of our thriving Minster community.
The Minster Fire Department taught the students how to safely exit a building during a fire and demonstrated how they use a thermal imaging camera. A house trailer filled with smoke provided students with skills to exit a structure safely. Firefighters reminded students to discuss their home safety plan and check detectors once a month. On October 13th, the students traveled back in time while visiting the Johnston Farm & Indian Agency in Piqua. They enjoyed learning that John Johnston was an Indian agent from 1812–1829 and important in helping decide the route of the Miami-Erie canal would take through Ohio. We toured the Johnston farmhouse, springhouse, museum and an ancient Indian earthwork and burial mound. Students were asked to compare how the Johnston’s daily way of life differs from today. While on the General Harrison canal boat ride, students learned the importance of how the canal joined Toledo and Cincinnati and the impact it had on travel and shipping of supplies and goods. We also saw a replica of how locks are used to help canal boats travel up and down the canal.

The Village of Minster electrical employees shared information about electrical safety during Public Power Week. The students learned not to fly kites near power lines, play around green power boxes in the backyard or to go near downed power lines. The workers encouraged students to remind parents to call before they dig to locate buried lines.

3Rd GRADERS LEARN ABOUT MINSTER The third grade students have been busy learning about their community of Minster. As part of their social studies history unit, they have learned when Minster was founded and how it has changed over the years. They visited the Minster Historical Museum. There were many displays and artifacts showing Minster’s history.
In the classroom, they learned about timelines by putting major historical events from Minster’s history into chronological order. They also looked at a map of Minster from the 1800’s and compared it to a current map of Minster. The third grade students should be pros when it comes to Minster’s history.

First Grade News This year the first grade teaching team began departmentalizing for science, social studies, and social skills. The kids and teachers are loving this new strategy as they get a more in-depth feel for each subject. Science First graders are exploring science with Mrs. Winner. They have used the skills of predicting, observing, experimenting, and recording their findings as they have explored the power of the sun and the water cycle. Favorite experiments involved making predictions and observations of a solar butterfly and using a solar oven to cook s’mores. (Unfortunately, the sun did not cooperate for Mrs. Hess’s class. They will have to wait until spring to enjoy the s’mores oven!) Social Skills The first graders are working with Mrs. Albers on their social skills. We are using pieces of the “Stop and Think” series. This quarter the students have been learning the steps to becoming a strong listener as well as modeling what it looks like to be a good listener. The students have also been working on knowing when to ask for help and the appropriate way to do this life skill. The students are playing a variety of games as well as reading different stories that demonstrate these social skills. Social Studies Mrs. Hess is teaching social studies this year. Students have already learned about their school community. We discussed school rules, school leaders, schools long ago and today, and what a safe classroom looks like. Students listened to many of Mrs. Hess’ favorite books that help to teach these standards.

From The School Nurse With the cold and flu season coming upon us, I thought a review of hand washing would be appropriate. The 4 Principles of Hand Awareness have been endorsed by the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians. They are:
Wash hands when they are dirty and before eating or handling food Do not cough into your hands Do not sneeze into your hands Do not put your fingers into your eyes, nose or mouth.
The Center of Disease Control say hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the transmission of disease. Please teach children to:
Use soap and warm water
Scrub your hands very well
Wash between fingers, under fingernails, back of hands and wrists
Rinse well
Dry your hands with a paper towel
Use the paper towel to turn off the water – don’t use your hands
Singing the “Happy Birthday” song twice is about the same as 20 seconds – the time children should spend washing their hands. Hand washing is particularly important:
After using the restroom
Before eating or touching food
After playing with or petting an animal
After playing outside
After touching your face, eyes, nose or mouth
