He became an orphan early in life. His childhood hero was his uncle, Amiruddin Tyabji. He got a job as a guide-lecturer at Bombay’s Prince of Wales Museum in 1927. After two years, he decided to study ornithology at the Berlin University Zoological Museum. A year later, he returned to Bombay. He worked at BNHS and studied birds systematically for twenty years. In 1941 he published “The Book of Indian Birds”. Jawaharlal Nehru read it and liked it so much that he sent it as a birthday present to his daughter.
