For most high school students, January signifies the end of the first semester. However, for an elite few Fairfield Career and Technology Center students, January signifies the start of the Career & Technology Education (CTE) competition season. Over the coming months, students from Robotics, Health Science (HOSA), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Barbering, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, HVAC, Masonry, Sports Medicine, Welding, Auto Collision Repair, Graphics and Electricity will participate in various competitions in an effort to prove themselves as the best students in the state. Aside from trophies and bragging rights, winning state-level competitions affords students the opportunity to compete for prizes and scholarships on a national level. SkillsUSA students may also compete on a global level at the WorldSkills event. While some students may be gearing down to end the first semester and mentally getting ready to start the second semester, the potential competitors will be fighting to earn their spot on the FCTC competition roster. FCTC students will participate in the following competitions: First Robotics – February/March 2017 Myrtle Beach, SC Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Regional January 28 Westwood High School, Blythewood, SC Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State March 17-19 North Charleston, SC HOSA – March 18 - 20 North Charleston, SC SC SkillsUSA Leadership & Skills Competition March 29 – April 1 Greenville, SC (Multiple CATE Completer Programs) Phoenix Challenge (Flexo Competition) February 2017 Charlotte, NC Graphic Communications

Martin’s Math Club Congratulations! Ms. Alberson, fourth grade teacher at Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science, won tickets for her students to attend the men’s basketball game against Auburn. Martin’s Math Club was announced in November of 2016. The program is led by Coach Frank Martin, Head Coach of the USC Men’s Basketball Team, a former high school math educator, and the SC Education Oversight Committee (EOC). Working with SC math educators, the EOC developed K-8 standards-based lessons that incorporate math and basketball. Each teacher that incorporates at least one of two available lessons into their teaching had the chance to win two tickets to a USC home basketball game and each student who received a lesson was eligible to win two tickets to a home basketball game. Student and teacher winners will be recognized at the game and may have the chance to meet Coach Martin.

Author’s Soar at MLST Author’s Night featured students from McCrorey Liston School of Technology who were recognized for their accomplishments as a Rock Star in becoming published authors and illustrators. Author’s Night is a literary program designed to highlight students’ accomplishments in English Language Arts. Students along with their teachers used the writing process to explain thoughts, stories, poems and events to enhance their writings about a topic. In becoming a writer, students must go through each step of the writing process (Prewrite, write, revise, edit and publish). Once students completed the process, selected writings from each grade level was compiled into a school book. The book of stories were published and students had the opportunity to present their finished product to the student body, faculty, and community.
