NANAIMO ROWING CLUB NEWSLETTER Fall 2012 A big thank you to our coaches for their hard work this season. Kelly and Craig shared head coach duties and coached the returning junior boys and girls while Jon handled the novice group. Our junior numbers were a little low so we will need to do some active recruiting leading into the spring season. In addition to coaching the juniors, Craig looked after the adult rowers (masters and seniors) and the Aspengrove school group. Numbers were up for the adults but we will still be looking to increase numbers.
Coaching The NRC executive is pleased to announce that our new head coach is Craig Rutherford. Craig started with NRC in grade 9 and his obsession with rowing hasn't slowed down. Craig is actively pursuing more advanced coaching credentials and looks forward to helping NRC continue its growth. Craig will continue to be assisted by Kelly and Jon.
Fundraising The club needs to kickstart our grassroots fundraising for equipment. We have a couple of ongoing options which are detailed in the Fundraising section of our website (www.nanaimorowingclub): Tax deductible donations – donations of $20 or more to our National Sport Trust Fund project P202 are eligible for a tax receipt. Donation forms and links for online donations are on our website.
Idea – save refunds from beverage
containers over the year and donate to our NSTF project!
Thrifty Smile Card – this is easy. Ask us for a smile card, load the card prior to shopping and then pay with the card. NRC gets 5% of the loaded amount each month. Penny Drive – extended! Boys vs Girls! Bring in your pennies (or silver coins) and help fill our buckets. Again, this is easy. Other ideas? The executive would welcome any and all ideas for fundraising.

Regattas and Training Days NRC had successful regattas at Head of Gorge and Head of Elk at the end of October. These are races for the more experienced crews and we had Junior boys and girls quads as well as a Men's eight entered. We also hosted the always popular training day with Maple Bay on November 3rd. Thanks to the coaches for pulling this together. Also, a very special thanks to Sue Trebett and Barb Bell for organizing the food and thank you to all the volunteers that contributed to making the day a success.
Boathouse We have the plans, we have the city of Nanaimo's commitment to covering one-third of the costs. Now, together with the Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club we need to raise a lot of money. Unfortunately, this is in addition to funds for equipment and keeping the club running. The executive is exploring some major fundraising options and making grant applications. We will be asking for your help. Did you know that Nanaimo is hosting the 2014 BC Summer Games? Rowing is one of the featured events!
