7th Grade UNIT 11 OVERVIEW: The World Today Unit Outcomes At the end of this unit, your student should be able to: Evaluate the ways that disease continues to impact developing societies (i.e. the AIDs epidemic). Describe how personal financial choices in developed nations impact the quality of life in developing nations around the world. Support the idea that modern conflicts arise due to cultural divisions.

Connections to Common Core/NC Essential Standards 7.H.2.4 Analyze the economic, political, and social impacts of disease (e.g. smallpox, malaria, bubonic plague, AIDS and avian flu) in modern societies. 7.E.1.4 Explain how personal financial decision-making impacts quality of life (e.g. credit, savings, investing, borrowing and giving). 7.C.1.1 Explain how culture unites and divides modern societies and regions (e.g. enslavement of various peoples, caste system, religious conflict and Social Darwinism).
Connections to prior and future learning Coming into this unit, students should have a strong foundation in: The way that countries around the world are connected as a result of trade and technology. The impact of globalization on cultural diversity. How population growth in China has led to important policy compromises (i.e. One Child Policy). How different groups (women and black South Africans, specifically) have had changing roles through history and the impact culture has on those roles. The effect that movements for worker and women’s rights have had on global economies. The impact of globalization had, through economic pressures, on ending Apartheid in South Africa. This unit builds to the following future skills and concepts: Constructing charts, graphs, and historical narratives to explain particular events or issues. Summarizing the literal meaning of historical documents in order to establish context. Using primary and secondary sources to interpret various historical perspectives. Using historical inquiry to evaluate the validity of sources used to construct historical narratives.
