DRAMATIC SKILLS DEVELOPMENT VOCAL AND PHYSICAL WARM-UP ROUTINE Spend 15 minutes before a rehearsal or performance doing the following warmup exercises. Your teacher might add variations on these from time to time.

Physical exercises Divide into groups of 8–10. Stand in a circle. One person starts to make a series of movements that everyone copies. The person to the right comes up with a different series of movements that everyone again copies. Repeat until everyone had a chance to come up with a series of different movements.

Relaxation Lie on your back with your eyes closed. Slowly start to bring tension into your body by tensing your feet, then your legs, buttocks, stomach, chest, back, shoulders, arms, neck and face, until your whole body is completely tensed up. Now reverse the process by slowly relaxing your muscles again. First relax your face, then your neck, arms, shoulders, back, chest, stomach, buttocks, legs and your feet, until your whole body is once more completely relaxed. Your body should be free of all tension. If you still feel some tension, simply repeat the exercise again.

Breathing Sit upright in a chair. Make sure your spine is straight and that your chin is neither sticking out nor tucked in. Focus on your diaphragm and breathe in deeply and slowly through your nose, before exhaling through the mouth. Repeat this several times. Inhale to a silent count of five and exhale to a silent count of five. Repeat this, but add one count every time you do this to your exhalation until you exhale to a silent count of ten. Reverse the exercise and count down on your exhalation, until you once again inhale to a silent count of five, and exhale to a silent count of five. Remember not to force your breath.

Resonance Hum the following for as long as you can: First hold your hands over your ribs where you will feel the vibrations in your chest cavity. Then place your hand on top of your head and feel the vibrations amplified in your skull. Alternate between the two.

Articulation Repeat the following tongue twisters:   

World Wide Web Picky people pick Peter Pan Peanut Butter There was a fisherman named Fisher who fished for some fish in a fissure. Till a fish with a grin pulled the fisherman in. Now they're fishing the fissure for Fisher.
