1. How were you first introduced to CS? How have you continued to develop your technical skills and seek additional exposure to the field? Michelle Obama, when talking about education for girls, said that “There is no boy at this age that is cute enough or interesting enough to stop you for getting your education”. For me, the problem is reversed. There are boys who have stories about their passion: Computer Science that are inspiring enough to capture my interest. I listened to stories of cool people one boy met at the hackathon. I listen to stories about how another build a system to make renting house easier. I found myself attracted both to the complexity of this new-found field and to the simple concept he told me: “changing the world, one problem at a time” I stepped into Computer Science one step at a time. It started with passive listening to active discussion about the most recent news on TechCrunch and HackerNews. It started with completing courses from Codeacademy to building first demo website for my project. It started with a habit of learning to code two hours a day and ended with me changing my major from Economics to Computer Science. Life has lots of unexpected connection: no one will know that some high school relationships would end with a long-term passion with Computer Science. 2. Tell us about a time you’ve used your strongest coding language. Please go into detail about how you used this technical language. If talking about a group project, be specific about your role in the final product. (Examples can include projects, coursework, competitions, websites, previous internships, etc.) Most posts on Quora I read on “What programming language one should learn first?” points to Python or Java, an objectoriented language. I made a bold move: choosing a course called “Learn Bootstrap Development By Building 10 Projects” because I was particularly interested in front-end development. Being able to turn a visual model into running websites can engage both my artistic taste and technical skill. Another bold move is choosing to practice with the latest version of Bootstrap, which was different from the version used in the course. It required me to be less dependent on the course material and learn more from available sources like Bootstrap documentation and StackOverflow. It slowed down my speed of finishing one project, but it helped me a lot with learning to consult different sources to find the most efficient approach. I ended up finding inefficiencies in the code provided in the coursework. I finished seven out of ten projects from the course and greatly improved my knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Bootstrap. However, the more important lesson I learn is how following my own interest and stay independent could greatly improve my learning process. 3. At Google, we believe that a diversity of perspectives, ideas, and cultures leads to the creation of better products and services. Tell us about your background and experiences and how they make you unique. “You should not practice with such heavy weights. It’s not for girls” My father warned me after he saw my deadlift clip on Facebook. Being a powerlifter and a girl at the same time is not easy. Being a female powerlifter has been hard enough because of the inherent lower strength than men. Frequently facing judgments from my families and others for not choosing a feminine sport makes it even harder. But it didn’t stop me from going to the gym every two days, squatting, deadlifting and benching the heaviest weight I could. Powerlifting teaches me to neglect the noise and fight for what I want: strength. I might not lift the heaviest weight but I fill my mind with profound knowledge of muscles and forms. I joined powerlifting club in my university even though I am one of few girls. I replied to my father’s comment with knowledge of difference between men and women’s muscles and advantages of lifting He started lifting after that and I cannot be a prouder daughter. 4. Please list the technical courses you'll be taking next semester. If you haven't registered for classes yet, please list the courses you plan on taking. CS 2201: Program Design and Data Structures 5. Please list any clubs and/or organizations that you participate in. • VandyHacks: the collegiate hackathon of Vanderbilt University • YANA - You Are Not Alone: An organization focuses on assisting people with mental health problems in Vietnam • Vanderbilt Programming Board: An organization focuses on sponsor, integrate, and provide social, cultural, educational, recreational, and multicultural activities at Vanderbilt University
