Waterville School is Cultivating Leadership In Instruction You may have heard recently about a new teacher evaluation system in the state of Washington. This system is one that Waterville School and its teachers are embracing and utilizing to improve instruction in our school. In 2010 Senate Bill 6696 created the Teacher/Principal Evaluation Pilot. The new evaluation system was part of a reform effort nationwide to qualify for Race to the Top dollars. This bill created a pilot project and moved the state from a two-tiered system of unsatisfactory/satisfactory to a four-tiered evaluation system. The legislation also created eight new evaluation criteria for teachers and principals. These criteria strongly support collaboration between staff and parents as well as focus on use of student data and monitoring of student growth. For both teachers and principals, the criteria also demand constant reflection upon teaching strategies, curriculum and instructional practices and revision of these if they are proving to be ineffective.

In the summer of 2011, Waterville School applied to be a part of a regional implementation grant through our local Educational Service District to explore and utilize the new evaluation system. Waterville was chosen to participate through this competitive application process. During the 2011-2012 school year, a group of teachers and administrators from Waterville met regularly with other area schools to explore the three possible models for the evaluation system – Marzano, Danielson and UW CEL 5 Dimensions. After careful study, Waterville decided to follow the University of Washington Center for Educational Leadership model and adopt the organizations framework for quality teaching. Immediately our staff began working with the framework to talk about quality teaching and student learning. Our work continues in the 2012-2013 school year. This year we have a total of 7 teachers and 2 administrators utilizing this new evaluation system. Our entire teaching staff is using the framework to develop strong lessons, monitor student growth and adjust instruction. As a pilot district, Waterville has been lucky to explore this system and receive training through our grant, allowing us to be in the forefront of using this new evaluation system which we believe will ultimately increase student learning.
