Determining the Market Potential of Major Fruits in the Philippines: An Application of the Almost Ideal Demand System Gempero M.J.G., Digal, L.N., and J.M.P. Sarmiento School of Management University of the Philippines Mindanao
INTRODUCTION y Fruits are good source of vitamins and minerals. y Fruits have been one of the major crops that have high
economic value. y Fruits had significantly contributed economic benefits in terms of employment. y Fruits alleviate poverty.
INTRODUCTION
Volume of Production (in metric tons) of Major Fruits. Source: Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), 2010
INTRODUCTION RESEARCH PROBLEMS y How does change in income of consumers affect the domestic demands of the four major fruits; Lakatan banana, pineapple, Carabao mango and papaya? y What is the behaviour of fruit consumers in the domestic market when prices of these fruits or of its substitutes change? y Among these fruits, which has the highest domestic demand and market potential?
INTRODUCTION SCOPE AND LIMITATION y 44 provinces were considered y Limited to years 2000 and 2009 y Main variety of banana – Lakatan banana y Main variety of mango – Carabao mango y Bureau of Agricultural Statistics
METHODOLOGY Demand Estimation Model y Stone's (1954) model of Linear Expenditure System y Rotterdam model of Theil (1965) y Translog model of Christensen et al. (1975) y Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) of Deaton and Muellbauer (1980) y Inverse AIDS of Moschini and Vissa (1992) y Quadratic AIDS by Banks et al (1997)
METHODOLOGY Demand Estimation Model y Two similar studies were conducted in the Philippines. same commodities y time-series data from 1990 to 2007 y
y Tagudin (2009)
banana, papaya, and pineapple are normal goods and considered substitute to mango which is an inferior good. y Papaya and pineapple are responsive to their own price while mango is responsive to income. y
y Baradas (2010) y
Rotterdam model was better than AIDS in estimating the demand of fruits - smaller standard errors and more consistent parameter signs.
METHODOLOGY Demand Estimation Model using Cross-section data y Huang and Lin (2000) used demand system from household survey data 1987-88 Nationwide Food Consumption Data Survey USDA. y Goodwin et al (2003) accounted all elasticity estimation study relating to road traffic and fuel consumption and found out 83 using time-series, 77 cross section / time-series, 15 cross-section. y Bachrach and Vaughan (1994) estimated household demand using a sample of 685 families from 34 localities in rural Argentina during 1987.

RESULTS Using OLS with 5% alpha, 2000 data revealed that 14 out of 24 (58%) parameters are significant while for 2009 data only 12 out of 24 (50%) are significant. y The results from the OLS has contemporaneous errors with Chi-square 59.671 (p-value = 0) for 2000 data and Chi-square 43.596 (p-value = 0) for 2009 data, thus, SUR is preferred. y Using SUR system method for both years are all significant at 5% alpha. These parameters satisfy the three assumptions of adding-up, heterogeneity, and Slutsky symmetry as well. y

ANALYSIS Lakatan banana y considered a necessity good y has the highest increase in market potential y becoming less responsive to any increase to its price y closest substitute to Carabao mango and pineapple
ANALYSIS Carabao Mango y considered a luxury good y shows an increasing market potential next to Lakatan banana y becoming more responsive to change in price.
ANALYSIS Pineapple y considered an inferior good y suffers from a decreasing market potential y becoming more responsive to change in price y closest substitute to Lakatan banana.
ANALYSIS Papaya y considered an inferior good y has decreasing market potential y considered a Giffen good y It does not compete with other fruits.
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION Lakatan Banana & Carabao Mango y increasing market potential y demand in the market is more of these goods y should be considered one of the priorities of the government y appropriate policies that could help improve the production of these fruits y investors and producers could venture into these fruits as its future is promising.
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION Carabao Mango & Pineapple y becoming more responsive to price change y there is a good incentive if production of these fruits is improved y can be achieved through technological advancement y government support in terms of research undertakings y private sector to invest in these technologies
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION Papaya y more of a Giffen good y local producers may take advantage of this fact y develop more ways on how they could improve the quality of papaya and sell it at a premium price.
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION Future Research y for the academe, the use of dynamic specifications of AIDS such as MAIDS, QUAIDS, IAIDS among others.
