CHOSEN CONCEPT A tablecloth that is interactive through conductive ink.
Eve McCann
The design is dependant on the conductivity of metal cutlery. A sound will be produced as the item completes an electronic circuit.
Belfast
IDEATION
Glasgow
This stage began with exploring what sounds could be created by engaging with a set of cutlery and utensils. Different tempos and notes were considered depending on the proximity of the tableware to the pattern on the table.
Consideration was given to how the sound might quicken or slow down depending on your activity.

CONDUCTIVE INK SCREENPRINTING
Synthesised sounds were created and coded using Ardunio. Each type of place setting had it’s own sound.
ILLUSTRATION OF SCREEN PRINT Project
Responsive Environments
Glasgow
A3 was the largest screen printing size available for this process. This resulted in the challenge of matching up the printed pattern precisely which is necessary when creating a circuit.
Belfast
The table cloth was then printed using Bare Conductive Ink which allows an electric current to flow through. This ensures that when pressure is applied through setting cutlery on the table or someone touching the marked areas a synthesised sound will play.
Eve McCann
We chose to combine form and function of the electronic circuit to make up the pattern of the tablecloth. Each group of similar place settings must be connected into a single circuit and therefore must be printed such. This required multiple circuits on the same cloth.

The diners had a very positive, playful experience when a trial run was conducted. This project developed my coding skills and their application to a higher level.
Eve McCann
When people or cutlery touched a circuit different experiential sounds are triggered. Soft notes were selected instead of melodies or short tunes as they were found to be less intrusive to the dining experience after analysis.

TEACHER
Eve McCann
Brief: To engage with a culture on the edge of mainstream society. We tried to gain insight into their lives and design a product or service for this niche user group that enhances their particular fringe activity. I chose an Irish speaking group in Glasgow.
Belfast
The Beginner’s Irish Gaelic speaking group in Govan has only six members. Frequently, only two members attend class. There are seldom opportunities to practice speaking Gaelic. These beginners had been attending since September 2016, earlier this year.

Artefact 2 tested the members’ knowledge about healthy and unhealthy foods. They would stand and throw the food into the correct zone.
Artefact 2 was designed to encouraging conversation between group members so they feel more relaxed.
Eve McCann
Prior to my first visit, I considered ways to get the group to engage with me.
I posed a number of “ Tell me about a time when...” questions to the Irish speaking group. I tested this and it worked extremely well. It provided great insight into the members of the group.

CHOSEN CONCEPT Ar mhaith leat cupan tae?
After considering several opportunities, the chosen concept was interactive Gaelic speaking devices. The Gaelic doll was disguarded because Adult users felt uncomfortable speaking to a doll. The final concept was refined to a kit of sensors.

PROTOTYPES I prototyped sensors for specific designed objects from FIMO. I was concerned by the colourful sensors suitability and if they would be a danger for children.

FINAL DESIGN SOLUTION
Eve McCann Belfast Glasgow
I have created a kit of sensors designed for specific objects within the home. They act as a Gaelic speaking pal when a teacher isn’t present providing conversational phrases when the student comes in close proximity to each sensor. They function through BLE Blue-tooth connecting to the Blue-tooth on your mobile phone. This connects to a data base created by the teacher in line with the syllabus and the Connacht dialect this group is learning.
This product is called ‘Comhra’ meaning ‘Conversation’ in Irish Gaelic. I chose this because it is pronounced “Cora” which is an Irish girls name.
I designed the logos for the sensors based on familiar household products. Project

Roberts Studio’s hanging shapes. I played on the idea of falling into bed after a long day’s work. I thought creating a feeling of a zone of tranquillity intended to give a humanistic form of intimacy was intriguing. I thought that the MP3 sounds could be activated through touch. I liked how the shapes hung allowing them to swing and rock the person to sleep reflecting on emotional memories of being rocked to sleep as a child. This concept was designed for someone who requires the feeling of a human connection, the sense of comfort and calm after a long day.
Belfast
I was instructed to explore the concept of a soothing MP3 Player.
This Concept was inspired by Bryony
Eve McCann
Brief: Re-imagine a domestic familiar product with an emotional behavioural characteristic. Each product has an emotional relationship with its user, where emotions convey its purpose.
Glasgow
This is an interactive zone of tranquillity that responds to touch through directional light. The room aims to have embedded MP3s. It tries to imitate a real human relationship. As you learn more about a person within a relationship so too do you find the embedded MP3s in the ‘nooks an crannies’ of the room. It’s about
forming a human connection with your space. A room with a heart.
I combined aspects of these concepts to create a final concept. Project

PROTOTYPE TESTING I looked at the cushioning feel, focusing on textures and materials deciding which was most comforting based on user testing. I was interested in weighted blankets after reading about the impact they make on creating a calm, soothing experience for suffers of anxiety and sensory disorders. I became inspired by Philips Hue Go’s adjustable colour temperature and Apple Home. This made me excited
about the possibility of light changing according to the type of music that’s being played. I also started to Eve McCann
question whether it could have the capability to learn from the users behaviour.
Belfast
For the internal control, I was more interested in the spherical shape rather than the rings as I thought they would be more soothing for the user to play with. I drew inspiration from my earlier experiments (RIGHT) to inform how I would explore this further.

FINAL DESIGN SOLUTION
Eve McCann
I created a bolster cushion with an internal control connecting already existing blue-tooth devices within the home. The user moves the control in specific directions changing the light and sound in the room to create a soothing and tranquil atmosphere. The lighting works in harmony with the music that’s being played.
Belfast Glasgow
Inspired by blind use, the internal control is modelled using three balls with different textures.
Project
First is FIMO, which turns smoothly suggesting a change in volume.

Second is Polystyrene which has a hard core, requiring a definite action by the user to turn it on or off.
Third is Polymorph which sticks more suggesting skipping songs forward and backwards due to more friction.

Live Project This project was in partnership with Bottle of Ginger, a soft drinks company in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow. The client required a brand revolution to increase poularity of their product and increase community involvement.
Eve McCann
After discussion with the client, I identified the brand values. These being; inclusive, micro-local, a collectively conscious community, honest clarity about Bottle of Ginger’s goals and fresh produce.
Belfast
Through my ethnographic research of Bridgeton, I identified
large areas of
disused land. I also spoke to a local Primary School teacher who said they
“ Hire interpretors for every parent teacher meeting” because of the largely international community within the area. She discussed how the community don’t work well together and a community initiative would really help people from all aspects of life to work well together. Project

CHOSEN CONCEPT
Eve McCann Belfast
1
My chosen concept focused on the regeneration of discussed land in Bridgeton. This is in line with Bottle of Ginger’s ‘Forage, Farm and Ferment’ initiative. I initially wanted to acquire a network of allotments around Bridgeton where the community were actively involved in the farming process. Bottle of Ginger are currently at the outskirts of Bridgeton and are finding it difficult to get the community to be involved. Through bringing Bottle of Ginger to the community they can see the progress taking place on a daily basis and are more likely to get involved.
3
This would encourage cross community projects where people interact in an open honest environment.

GLASGOW GROWN GOODNESS Eve McCann Belfast Glasgow
FINAL PRODUCT
‘Glasgow Grown Goodness’ is a soft drink alternative to alcoholic beverages. This opportunity micro farms disused areas of land. Along with the already existing allotment on outskirts of Bridgeton, Bottle of Ginger should acquire the allotment closest to the Bridgeton Umbrella. The central
point of life in Bridgeton. This allows Bottle of Ginger to bring themselves to the people. These two allotments should co- exist allowing for increased yield and increased fertility due to polycultures and crop rotation. This presents the opportunity for seasonal drinks which people can look forward to. I propose that Bottle of Ginger link up with Drygate, the Glaswegian Brewing company. This is a 20 minute walk away from Bottle of Ginger’s main site and so emphasises the idea of the micro local. I propose that this could be sold in Drygate’s bottle shop as a soft drink alternative or as a mixer for seasonal shandy’s.

Interactions
STORYBOARDING
This was a group project with four other people, focusing on designing a product to better user experience.
Eve McCann
We started to explore access by traditional intercom systems.
Belfast
Our aim was to make the process of access to the home more engaging and smoother.
Glasgow
After first refining our search from Access, we narrowed it down to Intercoms. We were extremely interested by two way intercoms. We first observed what happened when we
Project
Designing Interactions
interacted with a number of intercoms and then we decided to create storyboards of the different interactions. The one above shows a simplified initial version to the overall interaction. This and our observations
when using the intercom system gave us our starting point. This encouraged our group to look at the interaction between, the visitor and the resident.
Portfolio 2016/ 2017
We created a number of prototypes, testing different materials, different sizes, different textures and different shapes.
Belfast
We discussed product names and decided on Enso. Enso is a moment where the mind is free to let the body create. We wanted to incorporate wood into the design to give an organic, homely feeling to the user.
Glasgow
PROTOTYPES
Eve McCann
Through prototyping, we realised that our hands covered the screens when we used the intercom. We have to create a better understanding of anthropometrics, material, ergonomics, colour and form.
Project
Designing Interactions
Portfolio 2016/ 2017
FINAL DESIGN SOLUTION The home owner is initially required to record a greeting on the intercom. This saves them from having to answer the intercom every time it’s called. The same intercom design is both present in the home and outside for visitor access. Eve McCann
Once called, the intercom system would sound repeating the home owner’s prerecorded message to the visitor. This would be similar to your mobile’s answering machine.
Belfast Glasgow
The visitor will intuitively turn the dial to switch ON. The user will be presented with a library of surnames rather than flat blocks or numbers. Having selected the homeowners surname, you would push the intercom to select. The screen will then present a list of first names alongside surnames Project
Designing Interactions
which the visitor will scroll through before pushing on the required name. The pre recorded message will play downstairs to the visitor and the homeowner will be signalled by a short message indicating who’s at the door at the same time.
Once accepted, the block number and flat number will be shown.
