Exeter--A Long Time Ago Exeter before the fire, but with a different and apparently later depot shown in the foreground. The Baptist Church steeple is readily identifiable in the background. Mrs. Hutchens friends have identified the last three buildings to the south as Wilhelm Barber Shop, the hotel, and Jack England's hardware. Mr. England was the father of Turkey England. A pump located east of the depot, about half way between the depot and the corner building, supplied water for anyone who want~d, needed and took the trouble to pump it. S.talrs on the corner provided access to the Opera House upstaIrs over the corner building. Mrs. Hutchens explains that the Opera House provided entertainment for the entire community. Saturday night was movie night, when everyone came. Other times through the week, a group of young people and adults would put on plays, comparing, Mrs. Hutchens relates, t? toda.y's Little Theaters, complete with costumes. Dr. Se~r~y s offIce was also upstairs. The downstairs of the b.uJldmg w~s occupied by Babe Roseberry's grocery store. The building on the far left of the business section was the Bates Groc~ry, and the J.F. Pilant Drug Store was also located on that strIp. The picture is believed to have been taken from atop a grain elevator, located in what was commonly called "the commons." SOUTH BARRY COUNTY HOSPITAL Dismissed May 7: Ethel Foster, Purdy. The first depot in Exeter is said to have been destroyed by fire. It was in service when Exeter was incorporated February 7, 1881.

W.A. Bashe was the Wells Fargo telegraph and express agent at that time. The family lived in quarters located on the second floor. W.A. Bashe was the father of the late Charley Bashe, former Barry County official. It is interesting to note the "small fry" clad in a long dress, typical of the times for both little boys and girls. Also to be seen, by scanning the picture closely, is a figure of a woman

Two of the main business buildings in Exeter's past belonged The gentleman pictured right has been identified as Mr. to Thomas Kersey's Hardware Store and T.E. McClure's Drug Kersey, owner of the hardware store. Note that there are no Store. The Kersey Hardware was established in 1887. The women on the street, and the men all look "dressed up," with hardware signs advertise Springfield wagons and a number of vests and most of them sporting ties. old ,ifQI! ,k~ttles are apparently for sale in front i)f the stor,e.
