FALL 2016
The Bookmark FRIENDS OF THE MEDWAY PUBLIC LIBRARY 26 High St., Medway, MA 02053
Friends Raises $18,000 for the Medway Library The volunteers with Friends of the Medway Library have always worked hard supporting the library. This year Friends was able to raise over $18,000, which was presented at the Trustee meeting. In addition, Friends received grants from the Middlesex Bank, the Lions Club, and the Medway Cultural Council. Friends raises most of the funds from the large book sales in May and October, the most popular sales in the area. Additionally, Friends runs an ongoing sale across the from the circulation desk. All proceeds are used for new materials and programs. Since the Library’s general fund does not cover museum passes, almost all of them are paid for by the Friends donation. According to Margaret Perkins, Director of Medway Library, “We have the best Friends group anywhere. They are involved in so many projects. They helped organize the new Maker Space, run the Lego Club, the Gingerbread Festival, and monthly family movies, as well as obtain discounted zoo passes for patrons.”

What’s a Maker Space? Do you want to convert your old family VHS tapes, slides and negatives to a DVD? Would you like to create one-of-a-kind holiday cards using our green screen? Would you like to make something fun with our 3D printer? Next time you visit the library, check out the new Maker Space. You don’t need to be a techie to use the equipment, most have easy instructions. Some, such as the 3D printer, soldering iron and the sewing machines require quick certification. Just call the library or visit the website for more information on scheduled certification sessions. The room also has numerous computers with the latest software, a scanner, a printer, and large tables for meeting space. The Maker Space is open during regular library hours.

LEGO CLUB RESUMES I Get By With a Little Help from My Friends
The next session will be held on
Wednesday, September 28 4-5:00 pm in the Cole room Lego fans, 1st grade and up, are invited to have fun building Lego Creations based on the theme of the day or they can just free build. Creations will be displayed at the library and a digital photo will be emailed to you. Space is limited, so you must sign up at the library circulation desk or on the web site.
Deb Perkins, a Friends volunteer for many years, commented that her whole family gets involved, from helping in Lego Club to volunteering at the Maker Space. “The library is our favorite place. Volunteering with Friends is a terrific way to help the community and have fun too.” There are so many ways you can help and you don’t need to make a big commitment. Put up a yard sign advertising our sale, give us two hours sorting or selling books, help out at one of our special programs, such as Lego Club or the Gingerbread Festival. Here are two of the many benefits you receive when you are a Friend of the Medway Library:
The Friends-Only Sale has extended hours: Friday, October 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. You get the first opportunity to peruse and purchase books. You never know what treasures await; for example, this fall we will have a selection of autographed books, and our DVD and computer game shelves are overflowing. Throughout the year Friends members receive advanced notification of special book collections featured at our Ongoing Sale shelves across from the circulation desk. In the past we’ve had one week pop-up sales of almost brand new children’s books, cookbooks, DVD’s, and history books.
DONATE YEAR-ROUND The Friends accept book donations year-round; a collection box is located at the bottom entrance of the library.
