Grade 9 HIF Individual and Family Living

Looking Ahead…. (Course offerings may vary from year to year. Check your course calendar for details.)

IN GRADE 10 As you begin your journey into young adulthood, you need to know some basic life skills. What skills you ask? Well, stuff like how do you resolve problems or talk about issues that are really important to you— especially when you think no one is listening. Or how to decide between spending time with your family or going out with friends. How does saving the money from your part time job versus spending it all really differ in the long run? We can even help you reach your long term goals and get you cooking delicious food!

This course is all about YOU! Here’s what we do:

 Communication skills & conflict resolution  Goal setting & time Management skills  Working in Humberview’s playschool with young children and an ECE (mini co-op placement)  Decision Making & Resource Management  Healthy Eating and Food Preparation  Explore Family Relationship Dynamics  Introduction to Fashion  Learning more about Me! And we also…..  Explore Teen Issues (such as building healthy relationships, drugs & alcohol, healthy sexuality, teen pregnancy, sibling & parent relationships, future planning, community resources, healthy body image, building self esteem, etc.)

HFN FOOD & NUTRITION You will learn how to cook healthy and delicious food for yourself and others—what could be better? Learning why you eat, what influences your food choices, what foods create a healthy lifestyle, experiencing cultural foods and preparing a full meal are all a part of this course.

Investigate how culture, media, retail and the environment influence fashion trends. Along with learning how to choose the right clothing and styles for you, you will make your own garment that you keep.

HPW WORKING WITH INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN As an aunt or uncle, parent, friend, or through work, at some point in your life, you will develop a relationship with a child. With a focus on child development and the influences and challenges of culture, society, and environment, you will learn effective strategies for interacting with children. Students work along side our ECE in Humberview’s playschool.
