1 Goal Students will express themselves effectively in both oral and written scholarly and professional communications. 1.1 Outcome Students will write formal position papers and/or reviews of literature that follow an organized structure, that adhere to formatting and grammatical standards, and that provide evidence to support their key arguments. 1.2 Outcome Students will design and carry out original research (either capstone project or thesis) that involves articulation of a disciplinary problem and associated research questions, data collection and analysis, interpretation of findings, and presentation of findings to a broader scholarly community. 2 Goal Students will develop and refine their abilities to use analytical reasoning to investigate technical questions/problems, and to draw conclusions based on that analysis. 2.1 Outcome Students will demonstrate a capacity for analytical thinking by finding and using information from the disciplinary literature and from members of the disciplinary community to complete technical projects as assigned within courses in their programs of study. 2.2 Outcome Students will demonstrate advanced technical skills, including computer modeling, computer-aided designing, building experimental apparatuses or prototypes, and/or producing other work that is representative of advanced technical work within the discipline. 2.3 Outcome Students will design and carry out original research (either capstone project or thesis) that involves articulation of a disciplinary problem and associated research questions, data collection and analysis, and interpretation of findings.
3 Goal Students will examine the social, environmental, and economic effects of technologies, particularly in relation to the ideals of sustainable development, and apply both empirical and ethical reasoning to discussions and decisions surrounding these technologies. 3.1 Outcome Students will demonstrate their ability to identify and explain societal and environmental concerns associated with adoption and use of technologies.
4 Goal Students will demonstrate a readiness to move into advanced professional roles within their disciplinary fields. 4.1 Outcome Students will exhibit professionalism as demonstrated through successful completion of key program checkpoints (e.g., the written comprehensive exam, the oral comprehensive exam or thesis defense). 4.2 Outcome Students will successfully apply advanced disciplinary skills and knowledge in applied professional settings such as internships, graduate assistantships, or post-graduation employment.
