A message from

The Chairman Board Of Trustees And Founder After University, What Next?” This is the question usually asked by the Freshers (First Year Students) of any University which becomes more vivid in the minds of the Third Years (finalists). Various people give it various answers for instance; a) When you finish University, you go and look for a good job to earn a good salary, b) When you finish University, you go for a Masters’ degree, c) When you finish University, you look for greener pastures abroad or outside the country, plus a multiplicity of other alternative answers. All the above are generally good answers, but from the inception of St. Lawrence University, it was geared to answer that question in a more pragmatic way. Whereas it is good to look for a good job, good jobs are not easily found. Whereas it is good to go for a Masters’ degree after the first degree, this should be done very strategically, not just to go for a Masters’ degree per se. When young people look at programmes on Televisions of developed countries, they tend to focus their attention on migrating to those developed countries oblivious of the fact that those countries were at one time undeveloped. They had to go through a number of revolutions including Agrarian revolution, Industrial revolution, and a number of other revolutions. These revolutions were undertaken by the citizens of those countries in a very hard way. Therefore young people having made this realization, should, after their first degrees try as much as possible to develop their own countries or if they are to go abroad for greener pastures, it should be for a very limited time to allow themselves time to come back and seize the local opportunities at home. Many of those who have gone abroad, it has often dawned on them that while abroad their progress is limited by an invisible ceiling beyond which they can never rise while in their countries of origin there is no ceiling. If one uses his / her brains well, there is no limit upwards except probably the sky.

St. Lawrence University therefore is objective and goes ahead to train the young people to answer the usually disturbing question, “After University, What Next?” At St. Lawrence University, the programmes have been designed in such a way that in whatever field of study a student may find himself, there is a compulsory component of Entrepreneurship so that they combine the academic knowledge with Entrepreneurship skills. This will help them to apply the knowledge which they have acquired from whichever field of study to respond correctly to the demands of the prevailing circumstances so that they can make money and make big money to support themselves and to develop their country. St. Lawrence University as an entrepreneurial centre has annually trained creative and innovative entrepreneurs not necessarily from St. Lawrence University but throughout the region. These young entrepreneurs compete for the great prize as well as adding value to the face of entrepreneurship at St. Lawrence University. SLAU is seen as a University, taking the much needed break from the traditional theoretical and much obsolete education system to align with the creative, versatile, practical work environment of the 21st century. The uniqueness of SLAU is embedded in the emphasis on ICT and entrepreneurship which is to spearhead the young generation to be “job creators” rather than job seekers.

Centers of Excellence SLAU has set up a Capacity-Building Institute (CBI) over and above the formal academic structures with the aim of building the technical capacity of SLAU by strengthening its internal framework that will serve as the planning unit for the University. Academic Information The university is a higher institution of learning that has the same opportunities to further your education; the following are the requirements for admission to SLAU academic programmes. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR SLAU PROGRAMMES Undergraduate Degree Programmes: • O-Level Certificate with 5 credit passes in approved subjects, including a pass in English language, or equivalent and • A-Level Certificate with two principal passes or equivalent, or • A pass on the mature entrance exam, or • A diploma in a relevant field from a recognized institution of learning Diploma Programmes • O-Level Certificate with 5 credit passes in approved subjects, including a pass in English language, or equivalent and • A-Level Certificate with at least one principal pass at A-Level in a relevant subject or equivalent, or O-Level certificate and • A certificate in a relevant subject from a recognized educational institution, or • For a Diploma in Secondary Education, one should have two principal passes in two relevant subjects, or • For a Diploma in Primary Education, one must have a Grade II Teacher’s Certificate from a recognized institution. GENERAL INFORMATION

In-Service Degree Programmes Ugandan applicants for degree programmes should hold either a diploma in Primary Education or Secondary Education and at least two years working experience Uganda applicants should hold a Grade II Teachers’ Certificate in Primary Education and at least three years working experience Foreign students who want to enroll; for a diploma course in Primary Education must have a Grade III Certificate in Primary Education or its equivalent from a recognized institution of Learning. Application Procedure 1. Obtain an application from the Registrar’s office or from the designed liaison offices 2. Fill the form as per instruction and attach copies of all your application fee as stipulated in the application from 3. Return these documents promptly to the Registrar’s office at least a month before the beginning of the new semester 4. The University academic year will normally commence on 15th August. Applications should be sent to the academic registrar not later than a month before the commencement of the new semester session. Admission of Foreign Students Prospective applicants whose final high school grades are in percentages and average points systems i.e. South Susan, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia and others have their grades equated or standardized by the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) before admission to St. Lawrence University. a) The certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) holders have a minimum grade of C+ and above b) A Diploma or professional certificate in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution of higher learning Mature Entry Examinations Mature entry is an opportunity extended to adult persons who have proven to be eligible for university studies but may lack direct entry requirements. The admissions Committee will evaluate a mature applicant, and if successful, he or she will be invited to sit for the mature entrance examination administered by St. Lawrence University. The applicant fills in the formal application form obtained from the Registrar’s office and returns it to the same office with the relevant documents attached (O-level certificate of education or the equivalent). In addition, the applicant should; a) Be at least 25 years of age, and b) Have been employed for more than two years (A letter of recommendation from the employer should be attached) c) Pass a mature entrance examination with at least 50% score mark. Successful candidates will be issued with a letter of admission to a degree programme.   Admission requirements At the time of the student’s first registration, the student is required to present the following original documents for verification • Admission letter • O-level Certificate / Pass Slip • A-Level Certificate / Pass Slip • Certificates / Transcripts of Degree / Diploma • Three photocopies of each of the O and A Level Result Slips • Four Passport-size Photographs (colored) • 2 copies of the Deposit / Pay-in-Slip and a receipt acknowledging payment of all the university fees or the agreed percentage.

GENERAL REGULATIONS Registration Once a student has been accepted for registration, he / she must complete the registration form, which accompanies the admission letter. Identity Cards All registered students will be issued with an official University Identity card which is valid one academic year. Upgrading from Diploma to Degree Students wishing to upgrade from diploma to degree should have the following; Overall Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.50 (Second Class lower) Complete all Diploma requirements Inter-Department / Faculty Transfer Students who may wish to change their programmes or faculties can only do so with permission from the Academic Registrar. Such students will be required to pay a Course / Faculty transfer fee as shall be determined by the university from time to time. A form will be issued, filled and returned to the office of the Academic Registrar. A student who as been permitted to change his / her programme / faculty or subjects is issued with a letter stating so, and on receipt of such a letter that student must complete THE ACCEPTANCE part and return a copy to the Academic Registrar. St. Lawrence University is committed to ensure a harmonious living of all the persons with disabilities with the rest of the members of her community. Students with special needs arising from their disabilities e.g. in terms of accommodation shall inform the Warden. ATTENDANCE OF LECTURES, ASSEMBLIES AND OTHER FUNCTIONS All students shall attend all lectures as set by their timetables, tests, tutorials, practicals, seminars and other schedules, courses of instruction as well as assemblies and other University functions except when given leave of absence as stated in these regulations. STUDENT SAVINGS Students are encouraged to open personal accounts with independent banks. Money lost in the halls of residence will not be the responsibility of the University. Once money has been paid as school fees, it may be withdrawn for other purposes e.g. pocket money, personal transport or school trips, etc, except by authorization of the sponsor and only when the student has a credit balance. MAIL SERVICES Incoming mail will be received by the Academic Registrar’s office and dispatched to students at Departmental level.

All First Year Students who will not have registered within the first three weeks of beginning of the Academic Year shall be deemed to have declined the offer of admission at the University. Students on scholarship will have their scholarships cancelled after that period.

CORRESPONDENCE All official correspondence by students to government or anywhere outside the University both within and outside Uganda shall be channeled through the Dean of Students, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor. 1. No St. Lawrence University faculty or student or group of students shall print, publish or disseminate or otherwise circulate confidential, false or fabricated information prejudicial to the interest of St. Lawrence University. 2. No student shall print or issue any anonymous letter or circular or document.

Introduction The Access Programme is a two-semester programme that is intended to bridge the gap of those students who completed O-Level and plan to enroll for the University degree programmes at St. Lawrence University. Target group The Access Programme targets students without University admission requirements (credit or points) to the University in Uganda. It is equivalent to A-level in Uganda. Objective To enable students meet the University entry requirements stipulate by the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES) of Uganda. i. To prepare candidates to undertake undergraduate degree programmes ii. Acquire appropriate skills in communication, research and general information iii. Help students improve their English language skills, especially those from Franco-Phone countries. Admission Requirements For a student to be admitted to the Access programme, they must meet the following requirements; a) Have obtained an O-Level Certificate from a country where A-Level education is not offered. b) Passed their O-Level with a minimum mean grade of a C+ plus Admission to degree. In order for a student to continue into the degree program, they need to meet the following requirements; a) The candidate shall be eligible for the degree programme only after completing two (2) full semesters of a total of 38 credit units. b) The candidate shall have an overall GPA of 2.00 or Grade of c) A student whose CGPA falls below 2.OO or below a grade of C shall repeat all of the poorly done subjects. No admission to degree program shall be given to such an individual unless they have repeated and passed the failed course(s). No subjects taken under access programme shall be accredited for an undergraduate / diploma programme. Assessment Assessment for access programme is done through coursework, mid-session exams and final examination at the end of each of the two semester session. Examinations constitute 60% while coursework and mid-session exam take 40% of the final grade. Duration The assessment program covers two (2) full semester sessions, approximately 8 months. A student will required to take all the 24 compulsory credit units and then choose from either of the two options of 12 Credit Units. The weighting unit of each course is a Credit Unit (CU). One Credit Unit is 1 Contact Hour (CH) per week per semester (15 Lecture Weeks). The Contact Hour is defined as follows; 1 Lecture Hour is equal to 1 Contact Hour (CH): 1 Practical Hour (PH) is equal to ½ Contact Hour (CH).

Elementary Economics The subject familiarizes students to fundamentals of economics; surveying macro and micro issues of demand and supply, labour economics, international trade and fiscal and monetary policies. Elementary English This subject empowers students to acquire and supplement the English language to express themselves fluently. It entails spoken, written, spelling, grammar and pronunciation. Environment and Society This course surveys social aspects of the relationship between human beings and their through an exploration of historical and contemporary debates. The course will consider how the relationship between nature and society can be conceptualized. Geography I Physical Geography The subject helps to acquire general background information and skills in physical geography: evaluating map-reading, photographic interpretation, climatology and geomorphology. Geography II World Problems and Development The course introduces students to the study of vegetation and drainage, population, culture and land use and levels of economic development. In regard to challenges that hinder progress, and enable students formulate solutions to world problems. History of African Civilization It is an overview of the history of pre-colonial African societies since 1800, to understand Africa’s global contribution from the ancient times on the origin of the African society, culture, civilization and religion. Focus on slave trade, colonialism, African nationalization and the neo-colonialism. History of Modern Europe The course acquaints students with problems that modern Europe faced, how they were solved and their effect on the world society. Inorganic Chemistry The subject enables students to recognize the structure, properties and chemical reactions of chemical elements in aptness to their daily lives. Introduction to Psychology It acquaints the students with elementary psychology concepts; focus on current social psychological delinquents.

Christian Religious Education The course furthers the understanding of Christian Religion; its basic origin, basic values and a survey of Old and New Testament. Elementary Biology An overview of diversity of life and study of living forms. The course will review plant and animal aspects in regard to nutrition, gaseous exchange, transport and reproduction.

Our Vision To become the premier tourism school of knowledge and excellence in producing graduates who are capable of injecting innovative ideas and practice into the tourism business world in a bid to promote local and international visibility and leadership in tourism related research, teaching and training, to facilitate the expansion and development of tourism industry in Uganda. Our Mission The mission is three-fold, and as the premier tourism school in Uganda, St. Lawrence University will achieve its vision by the following actions: Providing equal opportunity for all Ugandans while maintaining an affordable, high quality education; Providing relevant programmes of study which emphasize a greater focus on higher education and professional studies; Expanding its advantages to become the leading institution in linking tourism programmes to development needs in Uganda through education, collaboration and partnerships; Enhancing the cultural and environmental aspects in the promotion of education on domestic and international tourism within the framework of sustainability. Overall goal The overall goal of the programme is to provide students with knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes in tourism management. This will enable them to effectively participate in the development of tourism as an academic discipline and to improve the standards of management in the tourism industry. In the end, this will offer our students great career opportunities that would assist them in finding suitable industry placements (internships) which are an integral part of their studies. The specific objectives of the programme: 1. Provide integrated training programmes, which are relevant, rigorous and consistent with the best tourism practice and social responsibility. 2. Provide students with appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies in strategic tourism planning, hospitability services marketing, and management of tourism enterprises. 3. Provide students with appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies that will enable them to integrate various parameters (i.e. social, cultural, economic, environmental, technological and political parameters) in planning, organizing and managing the tourism industry. 4. Provide students with appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies in tourism product development, tourism service deliver and tourism marketing and promotion while continuing to promote moral integrity, traditional values and culture. 5. Guide students towards developing appropriate research methods and communication skills in the promotion of quality tourism including aspects of travel and hospitality services management, strategic approaches to tourism marketing, analysis of performance indicators, and best practice in national and international tourism development. 6. To deliver professional development learning experiences so compelling and personal, that we transform people in ways that enrich them for a time. 7. The department of social work and social administration (SWASA) is under the Faculty of Social Culture and Development Studies. The Department offers three years to training to undergraduate students and on completion, students are awarded a professional Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration Degree. SWASA is an interdisciplinary field adopting knowledge from economics, sociology, education, politics, philosophy and many others with much emphasis on education for professional social service design, delivery, and systems change. VISION A transformed society of competent and self-sustaining groups of social work practitioners who are able to enhance the well-being of communities especially the vulnerable, oppressed and the poor. MISSION To produce Social Work practitioners who can influence policy change and development at local, national and international levels through research and information dissemination. OBJECTIVES 1. THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL ADMINISTRATION BACKGROUND The Bachelors degree in Mass Communication is a multidisciplinary programme that borrows widely from economics, sociology, political science, environmental studies, cultural backgrounds and other contemporary disciplines, so as to meet the current and future communication and information needs of Ugandans in particular, and the world at large. Graduates of BA Mass Communication are trained to obtain placements in media organizations, government, development organizations either internationally or in Uganda, or the private sector, as journalists, information officers, public relations officers, advertising specialists, marketing advisors, etc. at the same time, students study options from Literature and any other language such as French, German or Swahili. RATIONALE Journalism as a profession is a highly dynamic, expanding field of study where persons engaged in it are constantly inquiring, analyzing, interpreting, criticizing, compiling and disseminating information about issues, events, and situations in society. VISION St. Lawrence University envisages a local human resource, equipped wit communication and journalistic professional skills, to contribute towards solutions to local, national and global challenges, through dissemination of required and development communication. OBJECTIVES 1. To produce graduates who will be able to demonstrate competence in writing news, professional documents, research and effective commercials and advertisements. 2. This is a community of Lecturers and Scholars engaged in addressing the most vexing unemployment predicaments. We emphasize creative and academic achievement, professional readiness, and diverse and international prospective in Industrial Art and Design. There are many opportunities for students to engage in create and scholarly research through the various courses offered to them by the Institute. As members of staff at the Institute, we offer meticulous industrial art and design courses rooted in studio practice, coupled with a variety of elective courses namely:- Decorative Painting, Graphic Design, Ceramic Sculpture, Drawing, Fashion Design, Photography & Filming and Textile & Fabric Design. We arm our students with tools to become job creators. And we continue to nurture them throughout the programme to start their own businesses either before or after their studies. The institute of Industrial Art and Design is a leading place in entrepreneurial skills. Our Institute participated in the following trade fairs, exhibitions and games. • St. Lawrence University emerged the best exhibitor in PEWOSA Trade Show and won a golden award in June 2015. The exhibitors were students from the Institute of Industrial Art and Design. • During the “Beauty by Works” contest held on 14th April 2015, two students of the Institute emerged the winners. • The Industrial Art students won in cross country athletic marathon in 2015 and 2014 in football respectively. • During the “Beauty by Works” contest held on 14th May 2016, two students of the Institute emerged the winners. Our efforts are also enhanced by the vital involvement of inspirational alumni, who are doing innovative and transformative things in the institute, which serve as shining examples of the exceptional training offer at St. Lawrence University. We invite the youth and upcoming artists to join us in order to learn how to create jobs for themselves as we continue to light our candles. The members of staff of the Institute of Industrial Art & Design desire to thank Professor Lawrence Mukiibi and the entire management of the University for the Colossal Administrative Contributions they have made so far in making St. Lawrence University a unique university.
