This conference will look at the role of the school nurse in •

An overview on how traumatized children's brains are wired differently. The presenters will aid participants in recognizing how triggered trauma sometimes puts on different faces in the school setting. The importance of the caring relationship as the key helping tool will be emphasized. Understanding the impact of health and wellness on student achievement and the role of public health. Evaluation of health as it relates to IEP/IHP/EER and Medicaid. Includes 504 and student eligibility with disabilities.

Definitions and Differentiations of the three types of trauma and accompanying factors will be given. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), or stressful traumatic events such as abuse, neglect, and violence, have a tremendous impact on the current, but also future health problems through a lifespan. This longitudinal public health study will be examined for outcomes, awareness, and prevention.

Participants will understand the impact of the health and wellness of students to their academic achievement. Participants will define how the work they do supports the overall environment of the school. Participants will identify how public health work impacts the students they serve. Signs and strategies to aid school nurses as they interact with many traumatized children will be offered. Write a basic individual health plan that meets requirements set by the Iowa Board of Nursing and Medicaid. Participate in a health evaluation to determine special education eligibility. Describe the special education process to add health services to an IEP. Write special health services into an IEP that will support Medicaid billing.
