Push-to-Talk, Situational Awareness and Enhanced Video Monitoring
Built in a matter of weeks! “When can we get more?” -AWSC First Responders
Working together, local, state and federal stakeholders along with private sector partners built a first of its kind Band Class 14 Public Safety network utilizing an existing Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and a mobile Cell on Wheels (COW). Throughout the twoweek long event, first responders utilized Push-to-Talk applications, situational awareness software and enhanced video monitoring technology to ensure spectators and athletes from across the globe were safe and secure. “We’ve only really touched the surface of what’s available through this technology but from a practical perspective it’s been good for my team in the field communicating with SWAT command to be able to have definitive and clear communications with each other.” -Deputy Chief Craig Daley, Avon Police Department - See other side -
This is what rural coverage should look like!
More Statistics • Active use of group communications! More than 2,000 Push-to-Talk (PTT) calls initiated with more than three users on average per PTT call • Band Class 14 Network had lowest latency of any wireless network • Consistent download speeds ranging from 10-15 Mbps
Lessons Learned • Dedicated public safety network is critical — commercial networks saw noticeable degradation during peak times while Band Class 14 remained consistent. • The technology will be adopted quickly. Users embraced the technology and required little training. • Push-to-Talk functionality is a necessity. • Mobile Wi-Fi hot spots can allow first responders and others involved with public safety to utilize personal devices. • Use of existing infrastructure is critical.
