Less than 200km north of Australia is the island of New Guinea.

It was the Australian Government’s support that allowed Indonesia to invade West Papua.

The Australian Government hides its support of the West Papua genocide behind what it calls its National Security Strategyiii.

To me this National Security Strategy has little to do with national security and lots to do with increasing and sustaining the riches of powerful greedy people.

As part of the National Security Strategy the Australian Government gives millions of dollars of military aid to Indonesia each yeariv. A key part of this aid is the training of Indonesian military officers in Australia.

Transcript Question 2 is: Why haven’t we heard about this before? Why do so few people know about the genocide? Would you like to know why? There are many answers to this question and I will share 3 answers:

32. 1. Lombok Treaty

In 2006 the Australian Government signed an EVIL TREATY with the Indonesian Government called the Lombok Treatyvii. In this treaty the Australian Government agreed to respect Indonesia’s occupation of West Papua. By signing this treaty the Australian Government has officially gagged itself from speaking up about the Genocide.

33. 2. Journalist Executions

Journalists have a bad habit of getting killed in Indonesia. I am aware of 17 journalists that have had execution style killings in Indonesia. Indonesia effectively has a media blackout and if you don’t comply then life is risky. When Australian journalists gets executed in Indonesia the Australian Government does its best to ignore it and do nothing.

34. 3. Refugees

In the past 15 years some 80,000 refugees have come to Australia via Indonesia. The Indonesian Government manages the flow of refugeesviii to Australia and decides what refugees we get. AND WEST PAPUANS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ESCAPE! Only a handful of West Papuans have managed to escape to Australia. So on the one hand the Indonesian Government pushes through 80,000 refugees to Australia. And on the other hand the Indonesian Government with the help of the Australian Government genocides 500,000 West Papuans.

So in answer to question 2: Why is so little known about the West Papuan Genocide? The answer is: The Australian and Indonesian Governments are working together to keep the Genocide unknown as much as possible.

Our Government does not care about the lives of West Papuans and that means that they don’t really care about you or I!
