Do we need the Free West Papua (political) Party (FWPP)? There are several different ways Australians are trying to support West Papua, for instance:  

Some are happy to support West Papuans in ‘solidarity’ as they strive for their freedom but don’t believe that Australians or the Australia Government should directly get involved. Others support West Papua’s ‘Self-Determination’ which means token ‘Autonomy’ for West Papua while still remaining under Indonesian rule and illegal occupation. This view is politically attractive because it effectively means that the Australian Government does nothing for West Papua and business continues on as usual for all those who are exploiting West Papua. Others still have been lobbying the Australian Government to step up and free West Papua. But up until now the Australian Government has played dumb.

These methods of support have been going on for over 50 years and have basically achieved very little. Indonesia’s grip on West Papua is as strong as ever; the Australian Government’s support of the Indonesian military is as strong as ever; and the genocide continues unabated. We need a new approach. 90% of informed Australians support a Free West Papua. It’s just that the 10% that don’t are running our country. For this reason we have decided to launch the FWPP. This is exciting news! This could be the game changer that frees West Papua! Instead of being outside the Australian Government pleading with them to act, we aim to be inside the parliament, as a new political party, steering Australian policy to free West Papua. The view of the FWPP is that the Australian Government helped create and is sustaining the West Papuan Genocide and Indonesia’s illegal occupation of West Papua!i This genocide has now killed more than 500,000ii West Papuans over 50 years and the Australian Government has never had any intention of stopping it!iii The Australian Government hides the West Papuan Genocide and illegal occupation behind its Foreign Policy and National Security Strategyiv. The Australian Government actually has a bigger say in the fate of West Papuans than the Indonesian Military. The Australian Government is seen as the biggest hindrance to West Papua’s freedom. We need to change the heart of the Australian Government towards West Papua. But we have few options as both the Labor Party and the Coalition give bipartisan support to the policies that sustain the West Papua Genocide and support Indonesia’s illegal occupationv. Furthermore, the political parties that have shown some support for West Papua have not been effective enough to change the Australian Government’s heart. But now we have the FWPP, in a real sense your $1 FWPP Membership can save West Papuan lives. With your membership the FWPP will campaign in the next federal election and if successful we will steer Australia to free West Papua. A great ocean liner can be steered by a small rudder and the Free West Papua Party will be that rudder to the Australian Government. Only then can grass roots Australian’s, like you and I, be confident that the Australian Government will change to support a free West Papua. Page 1 of 2

Australia helped create the West Papuan Genocide:  I.J.M Sutherland to D. Murray, ‘Foreign Office Southeast Asian Department, April 30,1968. PRO: FCO 15/162 DH1/7: The strength of the Indonesian position lies in the fact that … they must know that, even if there are protests about the way they go through the motions of consultation, no other power is likely to conceive it as being in their interests to intervene. . . . I understand that the exiles may find support in the Australian press. But I cannot imagine the US, Japanese, Dutch, or Australian Governments putting at risk their economic and political relations with Indonesia on a matter of principle involving a relatively small number of very primitive peoples. http://freewestpapua.org/documents/un-involvement-with-the-act-of-self-determination-in-west-irian-1968to-1969-by-john-saltford/  D. J. Wyatt, British High Commission, Canberra, to D. Murray, Foreign Office Southeast Asian Department, May 25, 1968. PRO: FCO 15/162 DH1/7: Significantly, this attitude was shared by the Australian Government, the only Western power with any remaining direct interest in the issue (Australian New Guinea shared a border with West Irian). In late May 1968, a British diplomat, Donald Murray, reported that from Australia’s point of view, the more quietly the act of self determination passes off next year the better.” http://ipwp.org/background/act-of-free-choice/ http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-28/rollo-west-papua-complicity/5049204 Australia is sustaining the West Papuan Genocide:  Defense Relations Between Australia and Indonesia in the Post-Cold War Era By Bilveer Singh. https://books.google.com.au/books/about/Defense_Relations_Between_Australia_and.html?id=kKDqYGSJO_w C  Australian Broadcasting Corporation Broadcast: 28/08/2012 Reporter: Hayden Cooper and Lisa Main A counter-terrorism unit trained and supplied by Australia is accused of acting as a 'death squad' in Indonesia's West Papua province. http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2012/s3578010.htm  Comments by Clemens Runawery West Papuan Refugee; Hugh Lunn Former Reuter correspondent; and Wim Zonggonau West Papuan Refugee. https://vanishingtribes.wikispaces.com/Factual+Basis+for+the+Story http://www.freewestpapua.com.au/fwp-news/tv-advertising-for-human-rights-in-west-papua
