Dear Parents/Carers, It has been so good this week to see our students come back from half term looking refreshed and ready to do lots of hard work over the coming weeks of the term. For the Year 10 and 11 students who are, of course, focused on their broad-ranging GCSE studies, doing methodical and concentrated work is becoming second nature. Indeed, for the Year 11s, who are beginning to think about post-16 study, this week’s Parents’ Evening on Thursday was a timely reminder of all the good work that has been done and what more needs doing to achieve success in the summer. The very positive atmosphere at this busy meeting demonstrates just how powerful and important the supportive three-way collaboration between teachers, students and parents is to the learning process at HNS. All around the packed hall, intense conversations identified both strengths and areas for development to help secure the best academic results for each individual student and hence the broadest range of subject choice at A level next September when we launch our new Sixth Form. This collaborative relationship and dynamic has, in truth, always been part of the School’s DNA, founded as it was by a collective determination between governors, staff, and parents to provide outstanding opportunities for all children. No surprise then that a concerted focus on great learning feels so intrinsic to everything we do and aspire to achieve.
The Year 11 GCSE Art students enjoyed a trip to Berlin over the half term holidays.

This academic year continues to offer excellent opportunities for our students to access independent and professional mentoring to help them on the road to making informed choices about their future. On Tuesday 14 November, our partner providers, ‘Into University’ will again be coming to HNS to lead a workshop for Year 8 students on ‘Learning Techniques’. Later in the term they will escort a large group of Year 10 students to central London to a major employer to attend an all-day seminar and workshop called ‘Business in Focus’ where there will also be an emphasis on entrepreneurship and business development. Our other partner providers, Mentoring Works, will be organising another Year 10 event for 40 students on Thursday 23 November, again in central London with Société Générale and this will be another superb opportunity for a different set of students to understand how a very large organisation and company actually operates. Our partner providers Grant Thornton will also be hosting seminars, enrichments and interviews over the next few months for Years 10 and 11.

Wild Education Workshop
This week, some of our Year 8 and 9 students participated in their second Wild Education workshop. During the event, students brainstormed ideas to make HNS a more sustainable, eco-friendly environment. Hackney Under 13s Girls’ Handball Championships
Year 8 girls studied handball during Autumn 1 PE lessons this year and were offered the opportunity to enrich and challenge themselves at the Hackney Under 13s Handball Championships. The eight girls pictured above accepted the opportunity; this highlighted their great intellectual curiosity and self belief, especially as none of the girls had ever before played competitive handball outside a PE lesson. The team travelled to Urswick School and played three matches, including an excellent team performance against Urswick School that led to a well deserved and very exciting victory. Amira Rowe was appointed team captain after she took the initiative to call her teammates in for a huddle before play started, challenging the girls to enjoy the experience and play in a determined, but fun spirit. From start to finish, the girls did themselves proud; they played with great energy, cohesiveness and joy. A huge thank you goes to Kade and Miss Purcell for their support and coaching on the day. A reminder that handball enrichment is every Friday between 4 - 5.30pm. All staff and students are welcome!

Maths
Year 9 and 10 Maths scholars visited the Bank of England (19 October) for an introduction to basic economics and an insight into how the Bank of England works and what its role is in the economy. We were given a lecture about the value of money, how money is made and circulates and how the job of the Bank of England is to steady the economy. We also spent some time in the museum, where we were able to attempt picking up a bar of gold!
8LN visited the Tate Modern on Friday 20 October in recognition of achieving the Airscore target for the first time. We visited the Mitsubishi giant 3 seater swings that have been installed in the Turbine Hall before going up to the new viewing platform on the 10th floor. All pupils were a credit to the School and made it a very enjoyable and well-earned trip.
