There are lots of new neighbors. New and younger! Please take the time to make them feel like part of the community. When attending a function, make room for our new friends at your table. How sad that we would even think about letting new residents go off and sit at a table alone.

One last note, CRF continues to work to do their part. The golf course has been, and still is, a work in progress. It’s been wet enough that the lawn tractors have not been able to cut lowlying areas. Animals were approaching homes. Management had these areas cut back with weed whackers. Residents keep their eyes open and look at their surroundings. Everyone, including management, appreciates the help. One last announcement: Nancy Lopiccolo has given her letter of resignation to the Board. In her 18 months with us, we have been fortunate to have gotten to know her and to call her a friend. We wish her nothing but the best. We are also fortunate to have found someone to fill the vacancy left by Nancy.

Donna Bragdon will be sworn in as a new director at the September meeting. In compliance with the new Chapter 723 Florida Statutes (Florida Mobile Home Act), if Donna chooses to remain on the Board, she will have to run again in March.

President’s Message Gail Price I looked at my calendar, and was surprised to see that Fall begins on September 22. It still feels like summer. Our indication that the season is changing is by the number of residents returning to Four Lakes after so much quiet. Welcome back to the early birds returning; we look forward to seeing everyone returning to Four Lakes. Did you think it was busy last season? I’ve seen Annie’s calendar – there are only a few hours that haven’t been scheduled. Think that I’m kidding? Try to book a moment of silence. Soon you will see flyers and sign-up sheets for many programs to be offered. We will soon be offering lay CPR classes and jewelry classes. Volunteers will be needed for the “Neighbor for Neighbor” program, Welcome Committee, CERT program, and many other activities. This is a community that runs on volunteerism, and we always need help. You can be part of the answer to that problem. The Yard of the Month program that started in May survived the summer. How many folks have you heard say, “I knew that this was where I wanted to live when I drove through the gate - it’s beautiful here?” Residents take pride in their yards, and everyone wants to keep it that way. Our “Yard” for September was chosen by Mary Sue Tarkowski. Our congratulations go to Bruce and Ginny Chandler of 1678 Glen Abby. (See page 4 for photograph.)

Here are a few reminders about the importance to maintain food and water safety during times of power outages or flooding. It is important to be cautious. Just as during any emergency, the last thing we wish to deal with is illness. Food-borne illnesses can be life threatening, particularly for elderly or medically fragile individuals. If in doubt, throw it out! When the Power Goes Out, here are basic tips for keeping food safe: Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed. The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. Buy dry or block ice to keep the refrigerator as cold as possible if the power is going to be out for a prolonged period of time. Fifty pounds of dry ice should keep an 18-cubic-foot, fullystocked freezer cold for two days. If you plan to eat refrigerated or frozen meat, poultry, fish, or eggs while they are still at safe temperatures, it is important that each item is thoroughly cooked to the safe minimum internal temperature for the food item to ensure that any foodborne bacteria that may be present are destroyed. However, if at any point, the food was above 40º F for two hours or more (or one hour if temperatures are above 90 º F) discard it. Once Power is Restored determine the safety of your food based on how long the power was out. If an appliance thermometer was kept in the freezer, check the temperature immediately when the power comes back on. If the freezer thermometer was maintained at 40° F or below, the food is probably safe and may be refrozen. If a thermometer has not been kept in the freezer, check each package of food to determine its safety. You can’t rely on appearance or odor. If the food still contains ice crystals or is at 40° F or below, it (Continued on page 6)

FLGC Bingo Association Update From Bev Eppler, Co-Director

Hello Bingo players! Our article is going to be short this month because everything will have happened the week after this article was submitted. The CRF electrician set up the wiring the week of August 22nd and the new Bingo machine also arrived during that week as well. So next month, I can give everyone a complete update. If you have not come to Bingo before, you should try it starting this month with all of our new equipment. I really want to say thank you again for all of the awesome help we received from organizations and Bingo players! A special thanks goes to Chuck Babli and Joel Fleischman who have helped so much in shopping for the tripods and televisions and putting them together. Also, to Annie Fleischman for letting us use the stage and to Gail Price for allowing us to store the equipment in the Cinema House and, of course, to all of our volunteers. Without them, we could not have Bingo. Until next month - Happy Bingoing! Any questions please call: Bev Eppler 298-9325 Curt Darling 292-0425 Joel Fleischman 298-8414

Computer Bytes From Bob Johnson For the past couple of months the Computer Room printer would not print from the first computer. This has now been corrected.

Paul Malksian is surrounded by his happy friends who witnessed his third Hole-in-One on August 5th and his second scored on hole #8 at Four Lakes. He was using a six iron. This month’s tip has to do with your printer. I have received several calls about connectivity problems. This can be due to many different factors but mostly a buildup of static electricity. When you encounter this problem, power-off the printer, and then unplug it from the power source. Restart your computer and connect the printer power and power it on. This applies to wired and wireless usage. If that doesn’t correct the issue, take this recommended action: disconnect your printer, remove all software and references to this and any other printer. Restart your computer and reinstall your printer beginning with the install disk. Follow all printer install instructions and if that doesn’t work, get a new printer. Newer touchscreen devices and touchscreen computer monitors, for the most part, use capacitive touchscreens that last twice as long as the older resistive touchscreens. However, depending on how heavy the use, they still last only about five years. (For instance, the capacity touchscreens in heavy use in the Hard Rock Casino slots, usually last about three to five years.) Screen protectors may prolong the screen’s life but is unproven. Happy computing to all, Bob Johnson, Computer Guy 863-294-5181, 2907 Shoal Creek Place

Park Ministries From Byron Sweezey By the calendar, summer is almost over. They say it was record-breaking hot and I believe them. By the time our northern friends return, the weather will improve. During September, we will return to our regular church schedule. Our non-denominational service will resume in the Great Room every Sunday at 5:00 p.m. The prayer list has many people requesting prayer for themselves and loved ones. We feel so weak in our time of need. It is nice to have others asking for the Lord’s intervention in our down times. To receive the prayer list or to request prayer, email [email protected]. The Helping Hands pool of volunteers should increase as our northern friends return. We want to emphasize again that the tasks that friends volunteer for are to serve the many and not the few. We do appreciate our volunteers and do not want to overburden them. Please coordinate all service requests through Barb Roberts and not through the volunteer. Bible Study will resume on September 12th and then will continue each Monday at 7 p.m. in the Cinema House. Chuck Blake continues to provide his in-depth knowledge of the Bible. A short movie is presented and then Chuck elaborates on the movie. He gladly answers questions that anyone will have. Please prayerfully support the families of Jerry Berg and Gerry Nieder who passed away this past month. It is at times like this that friends come through to support those who grieve. Thought: “Do not let the 10% of your life that is not perfect be your focus; let the 90% that is good make you grateful.”

Citizens Assisted Patrol (CAP) By Chuck Babli Ah, September!!! A new month here at Four Lakes and with it, the promise of a little change in temperatures and the onset of the trickling in of our winter residents who attempt to avoid the cold and snow of the northern climes. With both of these scenarios, we should see an increase of volunteer patrols. The summer has been a rough scheduling time due to a smaller volunteer force, extremely hot weather, and the needed vacations of our year-round personnel. This past month, I had the honor of addressing a group of residents at Coffee Talk. After introducing myself to those who didn’t know me, I proceeded to explain what CAP does (and does not do) in the Community. Afterward, there was a question and answer segment during which a couple of concerns of the residents were discussed. The two areas of most concern were speeding and failure to obey stop signs, especially at the main gate. I conveyed to the group that even though we work under the auspices of the Sheriff’s Department, we are not authorized to write tickets. We are a community comprised of mostly senior citizens, and some of these residents have trouble getting around. Therefore, it becomes everybody’s responsibility to insure the safety of all. I know we have volunteers who are not afraid to attempt to slow down speeders or mention to those who disregard stop signs but I ask for everyone’s cooperation by complying with these rules. Remember, there is a stop sign at the main gate, and even though the guard motions you forward, it does not relieve you of the responsibility to stop there. It is a dangerous blind spot, where golfers and golf carts cross that could lead to someone getting seriously injured. CAP is now on Annie’s website under Organizations/ Citizens’ Assisted Patrol. It includes more information about CAP as well as a form to inquire about volunteering. I would like to take this time to mention a couple of special volunteers. First, there is Thap (Tom) Dominh who together with his wife Lehao (Leah), provided a walking patrol. Recently, Thap had a knee replacement and is still recovering. Next, there is Wes Schripsema who is being scheduled for a hip replacement this month and will miss time while he recuperates. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their service to CAP, and wish them speedy and successful recoveries. And so until next month, Thank You, Chuck Babli

Four Lakes Chorus Notes Although the Four Lakes Chorus will sing at the September 9th memorial for Jerry Berg (rehearsal that day at 9:45 a.m. in the Billiard Room), the regular season starts with a potluck dinner on Tuesday, September 27 at 4:45 p.m. in the Great Room. Those attending are asked to bring either a main dish, salad, vegetable, or rolls and butter. Please bring your own table setting and drinks. Nonmember spouses are invited. A brief practice will follow the dinner to prepare for the season ahead. Residents who enjoy singing four-part music are encouraged to join the chorus. In October, the chorus practice resumes every Tuesday for rehearsal from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Regular attendance is expected. Directors are Pat Lincoski and Ron Schroeder. Another Accompanist Still Needed! Four Lakes Chorus needs another accompanist to assist Chris Gregory who has had some arthritic challenges this past year. If you are a Four Laker with accompanist experience and you are willing to devote your time, please contact Director Lincoski at 401-3659.

Saving Aluminum Tabs for Ronald McDonald Houses Every Tuesday, a special container is placed at the front door of the Clubhouse for aluminum tabs. During the rest of the week, stations are near the Pro Shop and the bar in the Great Room. These tabs are usually pure aluminum (versus the rest of the can which may include other metals) and so are quite valuable. Ronald McDonald charities provide places where families of ill children can stay while their children are hospitalized.
