How to Use Email to Reach Influential People

ow do you network and reach out to influential people youʼve never met?

I get this question a lot and I almost always begin by saying: “Donʼt use email” Email is free. Email is easy. Which is why email is overused and abused. And as a result, itʼs often ignored.

So in my course on selling through affiliates and joint venture partners I teach my favorite methods that donʼt use email. But recently I came across someone that gets results with email even when the person reading the email doesnʼt “know him from Adam”. My next guest agreed to share his best tips on how to use email the right way. His name is James Clear. Formatting the email:

Do NOT send long emails - get to the point

Be very clear about your request. Don’t make them find and decipher what you want.

Match the subject line to what the email is about - don’t try to trick them.

Do NOT make multiple requests - ask for one thing. Do NOT ask for a huge request if you’re not adding value first. Do NOT send out your email without proof reading first. Carefully wording your message is a huge advantage of email so don’t waste it. Do NOT use a mail merge template. Personalize it and put in some effort.

Try to get an introduction - remember, people with a lot of influence have large networks. Find a connection. Research the person you’re contacting before sending your email.

Address the “3 Worries” - Who are you? Why me? How long is this going to take? If you have to make multiple requests in your email - make sure you number them.

Show that you know something about the person.
