The night of February 16, 2017 marked the Induction Ceremony for the InterLakes High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is the leader among organizations and societies that promote recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. National Honor Society membership is often regarded as a valid indicator that a student will not only succeed in studies at the post-secondary level, but that members will also contribute positively in their communities. The National Honor Society member exhibits academic achievement, leadership, honorable and admirable character, as well as service demonstrating that the member is compassionate toward others and willing to use his or her time and talent for the improvement of society. Shown below are: NHS Chapter Advisor Christina Gribben along with senior NHS members Tyler Reid, Catherine Roberts, Brianna Knauss, Rebecca Otis, Jackson Williams, Nathan Manville, Mykenzie Sanders, Makenzie Giroux, welcomed juniors Juliette Bean, Parker Caswell, Kaitlyn Gable, Laurisse Jordan, Davis Jollimore, Catherine Leberman, Alex Losada, Elijah Lopez, Hunter Martin, Elijah Marietta, Gabriele Nedeau, Emma O’Hearn, Robert Sassan, Sarah Seeley, Julia Gracie Simpson, Nathan Sullivan.

JOINT INDUCTION CEREMONY The Inter-Lakes High School Interact Club and Future Business Leaders of America Club hosted a joint induction ceremony on February 17, 2017. The keynote speaker for the induction ceremony was Katrina Keefe of Gilford NH. Ms. Keefe has been recognized for her work to help end child soldiers in Uganda and to help end human trafficking of children across the world. Keefe and her father, Dick Aucoin are the founders of the Love 146 NH Task Force which supports the international human rights non-profit LOVE 146 whose mission is to help end child trafficking and exploitation of children, and bring hope to end this modern day slavery. Keefe spoke to the students about finding something that they are passionate about and being leaders to help fight injustices in the world today. The mission of FBLA is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. Many of the clubs members will be attending the State Leadership Conference on March 23, 2017 where they will compete against other business students throughout the state for scholarships and prizes. The following members were inducted Reagan Buhrman, Ian Daly, Alyssa Floyd, Julia Gintof, Alex Gumbs, Brent Gumbs, Ryan Kelly, Olivia Pendergast, Drew Schriewer, Juliana Salamanca, Justin Tinker, Maeve Torrey and Morgan White. ILHS Interact Club is sponsored by the Meredith Rotary Club. The club participates in service projects to raise awareness about local and international issues. The club’s motto is “service above self”. Through service, the students learn the importance of leadership skills such as integrity, demonstrating respect for others and spreading international goodwill to all! The new members to the Interact Club include: Molly Kernan, Samantha Kernan, Jasmine Morrissette and Catherine Roberts. The club is planning to hold a formal wear drive for the month of March and collecting prom attire for high school aged youth in New Hampshire. All donations will be given to the Faith, Hope, and Love Foundation for their annual Event Gowns for Girls and Ties for Guys. This event will be held April 22, 2017 at Plymouth State University’s HUB building. The foundation has helped over 1000 students attend prom that would not have been able to go due to the rising costs of the event.

AVID 2017 The AVID Elective for college preparation is currently underway! 14 fearless 9th, 10th, and 11th graders have elected to challenge themselves through a curriculum in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading this semester. Students have engaged in tutorials on Tuesdays and Thursdays, devoting time to higher levels of thinking and making meaning of their learning.

AVID Students Engaged in Tutorials

Students began their college application process with Mrs. Vieten in AVID this week! The new Common Application process allows students to begin and update their digital applications each year. This proved to be an empowering process for the AVID students. Mr. Mark Parsons was the motivational speaker in AVID this semester! Mr. Parsons shared his life story, including lessons he has learned along the way about what matters most to him as a student, teacher, parent, son, and citizen. The positive energy in the room was palpable. Thank you, Mr. Parsons!

Mr. Mark Parsons was the first motivational speaker in AVID this semester.

Mrs. Christina Gribben, Guidance Director, has begun working with AVID students to plan our college visits this semester. College visits are open to all current and past AVID students! This semester the March trip consists of visits to NHTI and Keene State College; the April trip includes visits to Emerson, Wentworth, Massachusetts College of Art, which are all part of the Consortium known as Colleges of the Fenway, followed by a Boston Red Sox game! For more information about AVID, feel free to contact Principal Murphy ([email protected]) or AVID Elective Teacher Dr. Michelle Diamond ([email protected]) and visit www.avid.org.

ELECTIVES FAIR ILHS held its first Electives Fair on February 14, 2017. This was an opportunity for our students to hear directly from the teachers who teach electives about what the classes involve and what the students will be able to do after taking the courses. The students were in mixed - grade groups and heard nine seven-minute presentations. Students were then able to make informed decisions when selecting their classes for the 2017-18 school year. From the feedback provided by the teachers and students, they found the morning very worthwhile.

Scoring also were Alison Haight, Catie Leberman, Willow Strother and Sarah Seeley.

Youth Risk Behavior Survey On Thursday, March 30 during B block and 3rd period all 9-12 students will be taking the Youth Risk Behavior Survey which we take every other year. This is an anonymous national survey from the Center for Disease Control that will take about 45 minutes to answer about 100 questions relating to health issues including drug and alcohol use, wearing a seat belt, eating healthy, and mental health. The survey is anonymous and will immediately be mailed out that day to the CDC to ensure confidentiality. Our school has participated in this survey every year that it has been available. It is a great tool to help assess the health and prevention needs of our students. If you DO NOT want your student to take part in this survey, please fill out the attached form and send it to school to Mrs. Edge in Guidance. I would be happy to answer any questions regarding this survey. Here is a website with more information: http://www.dhhs.nh.gov/dphs/hsdm/yrbs.htm

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

The Meredith Rotary Club’s Youth Exchange Program is seeking one family for either semester of the 2017-18 school-year and multiple families for either semester of the 20182019 school year and beyond to host an exchange student who will be attending Interlakes High School. Students typically arrive a week or so prior to the start of school and depart shortly after the end of school. Transfer of the student between the first and second half family usually takes place in mid-January. Two Inter-Lakes students will be outbound exchange students during the 2017-18 school year. Simon Bird is going to Denmark during his junior year and Brianna Knauss is going to Romania during her “gap year” between high school and college. Therefore, the Meredith Rotary club must host 2 exchange students in return (thus the need for 4 host families). Both students in 2017-18 will be a male, based on the preference of the 3 families who have already agreed to host a student during 2017-18. Families volunteering for the 2018-19 school year and beyond will have their choice of gender. Key Aspects of Hosting a Student     

Be surrogate parents. The house rules apply. Involve the student in your family traditions and every-day life as if they are part of your family during the 5 months you host them. Provide students with basic needs. When possible, expose students to places, events and things going on in and around New Hampshire. Special trips and vacations are okay, but are not expected. There will still be one-on-one time for your family. Exchange students spend 4 weekends (2-4 days per weekend) each semester away from their host family, attending Rotary events. Host families have support they can depend on: From a club of Rotarians, the InterLakes Guidance Department, and past host families, there’s always someone that can help with a pick-up from practice, a difficult conversation, or coverage during an unexpected emergency. Meredith Rotary provides the student with a monthly stipend to help cover expenses such as clothing and entertainment.

For more information please contact Dean Gulezian, Meredith Rotary Youth Exchange Officer by phone at H: 677-7172 C: 631-235-8654 or by e-mail at [email protected] If you are interested in hosting during the 2017-18 school year, please contact Dean as soon as possible. If you are interested in hosting during 2018-19 or beyond, please contact Dean by the end of April 2017. This will help Meredith Rotary determine how many candidates they can accept for the 2018-19 academic school year, when students for that year are interviewed in May 2017.

ROTARY CLUB HOST FAMILIE’S TESTIMONIALS

“I had no idea when we signed up to be a host family that Ana would bring so much more to our family as we gave to her. We still keep up with each other and she and [my daughter] are still close.” ~ Angela Webster, former host parent

Shown Above: Ana Lucia Besich-Adrian from Peru lived with the Webster family August 2012 - January 2013

“My family has had the pleasure of hosting two foreign exchange students for the Meredith Rotary Club, Ben Rubio from the Philippines and Marcus Jensen from Denmark. As a family we were a bit hesitant to make this commitment at first. We weren’t sure that we knew what we were getting ourselves into and we also wondered if we were qualified to take on this new role of parenting. In each case, our fears dissipated within the first few days. Our Rotary sons became members of our family immediately. The boys were open to experiencing every part of a typical teenage American life, including having chores, being committed to their education, participating in extracurricular activities, having a curfew, trying and appreciating a very different cuisine, and following the rules of the household. We held our Rotary sons to the same standard that we held our own children – and it worked out just fine. Becoming a host family was one of the most rewarding, educational and worthwhile endeavors we have undertaken. Being a host family didn’t just change our home life, it enhanced it. Our outlook on the world was enriched in so many different ways and we have acquired friends and family members across the globe with whom we will always be close.” ~Grace Ainsworth, former host parent

The class of 2020 surprised our amazing custodians with flowers, gifts, and thank you notes on Valentine’s Day! The class is very thankful for the hard work that the custodians put in each and every day! Thank you custodians!

The Interact Club at Inter-Lakes High School recently volunteered at the 38th Annual Greater Meredith Fishing Derby sponsored by the Meredith Rotary Club by selling NH maple syrup and 2017 fishing derby mugs. Proceeds from the club’s sales will go to the Inter-Lakes Got Lunch Program, which will help students get lunch during the summer months as well as Shelter Box USA, an organization that provides emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis. The ILHS Interact Club was started two years ago and has over 40 active members. The club’s purpose is to provide opportunities to work together in world fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding, and to grow as leaders. This year's club is run under the leadership of Senior President Jackson Williams and Junior Vice President Eli Marietta. Next month the club will be holding a prom attire drive collecting gently worn prom dresses, suits, ties, and accessories to help young men and women attend prom. All donations will go to the Faith, Hope, and Love Foundation, a local non-profit to be used at their annual Gowns for Girls and Ties for Guys event on April 22nd at Plymouth State University.

SUMMER JOB FAIR March 29th at 10:19 am – 12:00 pm HS GYM

Twenty local businesses will be attending and they are eager to interview and hire our students. Moultons Farm, Moultonborough Learning Center, Flurries, and Harbor Hill Campground to name just a few attendees. All positions will be advertised the second week of March. Anyone needing assistance in completing application forms or interview techniques please see Mrs. Duffield in Guidance.

Laker Bloggers! Alyssa Floyd and Willow Strother are both sophomores at Inter-Lakes High School. They love to write and are avid readers. The Discover Sandwich Blog editor, Janina Lamb was interested in hosting Laker students as she wanted a fresh outlook for the website. The girls are tasked with interviewing and photographing local Sandwich folk and creating a blog post. What a great opportunity as they learn interviewing and writing skills, meet new people and learn about their local area and neighbors! This is going to strengthen their resumes, as their work will be advertised publicly on the internet. This is a ‘win- win’ scenario as the students build their skills and strengthen their resumes. For Janina Lamb, it assists in advertising the Sandwich area and its artisans and

advising visitors of events in the village. It is a great networking and bonding opportunity for students, the school and the community as they work closely to support one another.

Thank you to Chef Mark from The Wine’ing Butcher who visited Mrs. Clogston's’ cooking class. He taught the students how to make pizzas and how to pipe twice baked potatoes. Shown in photo: Sean Jenot and Rachael Davis
