Syllabus Independent Study Band School Year 2014-2015 Instructor: Mr. Joshua Bosse Office: Middle/High School Music Room Office Phone: (207) 728-3371 (ext. 417) E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours: After School or by Appointment Required Materials: • Students MUST bring the following to every lesson: • Instrument, Reeds/Oils/Sticks, Music, & Pencil Course Objectives (MLR): • Students will play music that will challenge and advance their musicality, such as rhythms, intonation, and phrasing (A1). • Students will review music notation, symbols and terminology and use them to create simple compositions on classroom instruments (A2). • Students perform music of various styles and genres (B1). • Students will be able to accurately apply the accumulated knowledge and skills of proper posture and technique, musical notation, symbols and terminology (B1). • Students explains skills and concepts that are similar across disciplines (E2). • Students will make short and long-term goals based on rigorous criteria and related to time management, interpersonal interactions, or skill development that will lead to success in the arts (E3). • Students will demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and analyze how interpersonal skills affect participation in the arts (E5 a-i). Course Requirements • Private Lessons • Students must schedule at minimum of 2 private lessons a month with the instructor. •

Playing Quizzes • Students will have a playing quiz on the 2nd scheduled lesson of the month. The instructor will assess a section that had been assigned in the previous lesson to see if the assigned section of each piece was practiced. Students will also be given a rubric which shows what the instructor will be looking for during the playing quiz.



SmartMusic • Students are given up to 5 assignments on the software program, “SmartMusic” which they must complete every quarter. Students will have to come in on their own time to complete the assignments. • There are only 2 iPads available for all band students to use for SmartMusic. Students may choose to purchase SmartMusic for a yearly fee of $40, so they may complete their assignments on their own time, or they may wish to use the iPads that are available for them on their own time.



Band Rehearsals • Students are not required to attend band classes, but it is strongly suggested that they try to attend any band class that they can.



Assignments • Periodically, students will be given articles to read and summarize in a one page paper using Google Classroom. Students may also be receiving research projects about different composers, time periods, etc.



Early Morning Rehearsals • Students must attend EVERY early morning rehearsal ON TIME with the following: • Instrument • Proper marching attire (shoes NOT sandals or crocks). • Points will be deducted off the students' grade for being tardy and/or absent from the rehearsal(s). • Students who do not show up or show up late needs to give the instructor a note, e-mail or a phone call from a parent or guardian that explains why the absence occurred, either on the day of or by the next school day, (see Student Handbook). • Students who fail to do the above mentioned will find this failure reflected in their grade, and this may result in failing the course.



Performances • Students MUST attend the following performances: • Concerts (2) • MMHS Winter Concert – December 14, 2014 • MMHS Spring Concert – June 7, 2015 • Parades (4) • Madawaska Acadian Festival Parade – August 17, 2014 • Madawaska Christmas Tree Lighting – November 28, 2014 • Bangor Festival of Lights Parade – December 6, 2014 • Madawaska Memorial Day Parade – May 24, 2015 • MMHS Winter Carnival Coronation – February 13, 2015 • MMHS Senior Graduation – June 11, 2015



Pep Band • Students must attend ALL of the scheduled basketball games (See Schedule). • Students must report to each game at least 30 minutes prior to the game. • When students arrive at the game(s), they must have the following items: • Instrument, Music & Proper Pep Band Attire (Pep Band Shirt, Jeans & Shoes).

Concert Dress • Students must wear the following to each concert: • Gentlemen • White Band Shirt (will be provided) • Black Dress Pants • Black Belt



• Black Socks • Black Dress Shoes (not sneakers) Ladies • White Band Shirt (will be provided) • Black Skirt w/Nylons OR • Black Dress Pants w/Black Socks • Black Dress Shoes (not sneakers)

Rules • No food or drinks (except bottled water) in the band room. You must eat and/or drink your food or beverage outside of the band room. If you bring in bottled water, you must clean up after yourself. • If a student uses a school owned instrument, they must take care of it. The user, not the school, will pay for any at fault damages to the instrument. This includes ALL percussionists. (See School Instrument Use Contract). • Students who use reeds: There will be a sheet next to the yellow box of reeds on the table. Anytime that you need a reed, let the instructor know, then fill out the appropriate information on the sheet, and then take the correct reed in the box. • Bus Rules: All students must follow the protocol for bus trips. Gentlemen will be sitting in the back of the bus, and the ladies will be sitting in the front of the bus for the entire trip (see MMHS Handbook). Final Grade • The final grade for the course will be determined in the following manner: • Lessons – 15% • Playing Quizzes – 20% • SmartMusic – 15% • Early Mornings – 15% • Performances – 20% • Pep Band – 15% I do know that life happens! Families take vacations, students get sick, there are sports practices/games, or there is a lot of homework some nights. Please let me know what the situation is and we will try to resolve the issues as best as we can! I am always open to communicating with you!
