Welcome to Millbrook Academy

Welcome to Millbrook Academy

Useful Information for students and parents/carers This Welcome Pack is filled with useful information to help both students and parent/ carers in the first few days and weeks at Millbrook Academy. This booklet includes useful information, such as a map of the Academy which will help you to find all your classrooms. A timetable of your Academy day, so you know what time your lessons are and term dates, so you and your parents know when each term starts and finishes. If you have any questions or problems the first person to go to is your tutor. Your tutor is the person who is most concerned with your day-to-day happiness and success at Millbrook Academy. All Year 7s will start at the Academy on Tuesday 2 September 2014 at 8:40am in full Millbrook Academy uniform. On your first day you will be given a student planner. Please look after it and make sure your name is written clearly on the front. This is designed to help you organise yourself and your homework. You will also be given a copy of your timetable to help you remember what lessons you have every day. Please copy this into your student planner or staple it in. Your tutor will check and sign your student planner weekly and also ask that your parent/carer checks your student planner on a weekly basis, as this is a good way of communicating with the Academy

What do I do if....?

I get lost? Look at the map at the front of the booklet. If this doesn’t help, ask a teacher, another student or go to reception. Don’t panic ... everyone gets lost in their first weeks here, even new teachers!

I arrive late? If registration is still taking place, go to your tutor room and see your tutor. If you are too late for registration you MUST go to Student Services and sign in with the Attendance Officer.

I have a dentist/doctors appointment during the Academy day? If you need to leave Millbrook during the day you must bring a note from home explaining the reason. Your tutor/Learning Leader/lesson teacher must sign this note. When it is time to leave, go to the reception area with your note and sign out in the Absence Register. You will be given an absence pass that you must keep just in case someone asks you why you are out of the Academy. Don’t forget to hand in your absence pass when your return to the Academy so we know you are back.

I am too ill to come in to the Academy? Please telephone the Academy daily regarding any period of absence due to illness on 01452 865027. Please leave a message on the attendance answering machine or speak to the Attendance Officer. In addition, a note should be sent to the Academy addressed to your child’s Tutor following any absence. If your child is off for more than 5 days, a doctors note is required.

I feel ill during the day? If you are ill during the day you will be sent to Student Services where they will assess your well-being and arrange for you to go home if your are too ill to complete the day.

I lose or forget my lunch/bus or lunch money/bus pass? Don’t panic! If you lose something that has your name on it, it will most likely be returned to you in a day or so. You can go and check lost property or ask Student Services. If it is not named this makes it much more difficult. This is why it is important to name all your personal items. Please DO NOT bring valuable items in to the Academy. Millbrook Academy cannot be responsible for lost items.

General Student Information

Library/LRC (Learning Resource Centre) The LRC is here to help you. Our library is a busy well-used facility and can be used for reading, homework, coursework, research and computer led studies. All students automatically become members of the library when joining Millbrook Academy. You may:  Borrow up to 2 books on a 2 week loan basis.  Renew books if needed for a longer time.  Reserve books that are out on loan to others.  Use computers for work purposes only.

Co-curricular Activities We have a variety of clubs that take place at lunchtimes and after the Academy day. Posters showing all the activities running each term are placed around the Academy.

Security and safety measures for use of internet and photographs of students for the website and other publicity There are security and safety measures in place for students who use the internet and the Academy computer network safely and responsibly. The internet has become an important aspect of everyday life. It offers a valuable resource and extension to the curriculum for students, and can provide ways to communicate with others worldwide. At the same time, we may acknowledge that there are risks, due to the nature of the internet. Millbrook Academy has a filtering system, which sits between the Academy computer network and the internet. It has an electronic network surveillance system and is proactive in monitoring students’ use of the internet but cannot guarantee to block access to all inappropriate material. One reason for this is the enormous size of the internet and the fact that it is a continually changing environment. Therefore all websites and email accessed by students are logged and these are regularly monitored. With regard to photos of students, these are used (but without names) in marketing material for the Academy (website, prospectus, videos). If parent/ carers do not wish their child’s photo to be used for these purposes please notify the Academy in writing.

General Student Information

Precautions to be taken by students To further minimise the risk of inappropriate material being accessed, Millbrook Academy requests that everyone who uses the Academy computer network and the internet follow the guidelines below: 

All parent/carers must inform the Academy if they do not wish the child/ children in their care to have access to the internet. This means that parent/ carers accept some responsibility for the way in which their children use the internet and acknowledge the risk involved.

Students must never knowingly seek to view or download material using the internet that is illegal, pornographic, racist, sexist, offensive to minorities or anything else considered unsafe or unsuitable.

Students must be polite and appreciate that others may have different views than their own. The use of strong language, swearing and aggressive behaviour via the computer network is not acceptable.

Cyber bullying is taken very seriously and will not be tolerated Sanctions are in place, inline with the Academy’s Culture for Learning Policy, for students who contravene these guidelines. 

Students must not use the Academy computer equipment to knowingly break any laws, including copyright law. Downloading copyright music and films from the internet is illegal.

Students are solely responsible for the activity under their username. They should therefore never share passwords with anyone and should change them regularly.

Culture for Learning Millbrook Academy believes that in order to enable teaching and learning to take place, desired behaviour in all aspects of Academy life is necessary. We endeavour to create an inclusive caring, learning environment by promoting desired behaviour and discipline. We do this by praising students for good behaviour, effort and achievement using a praise scheme. Alongside this we also run a behaviour system that uses a series of warnings to prevent the escalation of poor choices. A system of yellow and red cards - with red cards being logged on the students record and an after school detention being given for each red card. We hope that your child will have a wonderful learning experience at Millbrook Academy.
