Organisational Environment The T C Beirne School of Law at The University of Queensland is seeking to appoint three Research Fellows as part of the ARC funded Harnessing Intellectual Property to Build Food Security Laureate Project being led by Professor Brad Sherman. The School is interested in early to mid-career academics who have established, or are establishing, an excellent research track-record. The Research Fellows will be appointed for 3-years (with the possibility of further extension). It is particularly interested in applicants with experience and knowledge in intellectual property and/or a related area (such as food security, agriculture, plant or animal breeding, or a relevant geographical area within the Asia-Pacific region). It is also interested in scholars with an interest or experience in an interdisciplinary area of research, such as science technology studies, anthropology, socio-legal studies or history. DUTY STATEMENT Primary Purpose of Position The Research Fellows will work under the broad direction of Professor Brad Sherman to contribute to the ARC Laureate Fellowship Project Harnessing Intellectual Property to Build Food Security. The project aims to maximise the benefits while minimising the costs of using intellectual property protection to improve agricultural productivity and food security in the Asia-Pacific region. The Research Fellows will be expected to undertake research into intellectual property and food security; to publish from the research; and to participate in a range of outreach activities associated with the Laureate. Duties Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:      

Conducting research as part of the ARC Laureate Fellowship Harnessing Intellectual Property to Build Food Security. Communicating research results through the production of a monograph, book chapters, articles in leading international peer reviewed journals, and conference papers. Contributing to the preparation of project reports and attending and contributing to project meetings. Supervising and mentoring postgraduate researchers associated with the ARC Laureate Fellowship. Assisting in outreach activities, including workshops, master-classes, training and conferences. Undertaking any other duties consistent with the above, as reasonably directed by the supervisor.

Organisational Relationships The Research Fellows will report to Professor Brad Sherman, ARC Laureate Fellow.

SELECTION CRITERIA - Research Fellow (Level A) Essential  Completed or made substantial progress towards a PhD (or have equivalent experience).  Knowledge of intellectual property law and/or an area pertinent to the Laureate project such as food security, agriculture, plant or animal breeding, science and technology, or a relevant geographical area in the Asia-Pacific region.  Demonstrated track record of conducting independent, innovative and high quality research in an area pertinent to the Laureate project and the ability to carry the work through to publication.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a research team.  Ambitions to develop a strong research profile. Desirable  Knowledge of a relevant interdisciplinary area of research (such as science technology studies, socio-legal studies, anthropology, or history).

SELECTION CRITERIA - Research Fellow (Level B) Essential  A PhD (or equivalent experience) and demonstrated expert knowledge in a relevant field.  Knowledge of intellectual property law and/or an area pertinent to the Laureate project (such as food security, agriculture, plant or animal breeding, science and technology), or a relevant geographical area in the Asia-Pacific region.  Demonstrated and well-established track record in conducting independent, innovative and high quality research in an area pertinent to the Laureate project, with the proven ability to carry work through to publication.  Experience in developing and submitting external research grant applications.  Experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop co-operative research initiatives.  Ability to manage a program of research. Desirable  Knowledge of a relevant interdisciplinary area of research (such as science technology studies, anthropology, socio-legal studies, or history).  Developed industry liaisons and professional contacts in Australia and/or the Asia-Pacific region. Qualification Verification An appointment to this position is subject to the verification of the highest academic qualification from the conferring institution.
