Regional Commissioner’s Report Our recent MOSC (Managers of Scouting Conference) was an outstanding success. The feedback has been extremely positive and thank you to the personnel that took the time to attend. It is appreciated. We had a ‘shade’ over 40% of the 73 groups in the Region represented. On the surface that attendance is disappointing but I certainly hope with the positive feedback, which by the way was essentially unanimous, it enthuses others to attend next time. It is our intention to run the MOSC every 2 years. A definite date for 2019 will be published in the next Bulletin in August 2017 to allow you to ‘lock in’ the date. One of the key speakers at the MOSC was Kelly Johnson from South Australia. Kelly spoke on leader recruitment and retention and was an exceptional presenter. What I picked up in particular was her enthusiasm and how contagious that can be to others. Kelly referred to Scout meetings i.e. all sections, as “show time”. No time for personal agendas or negativity and was quite candid if you are not enthusiastic and your attitude is detrimental to others, it’s probably time to “move on” and do something else in Scouting. I’ll leave it to you to do your own evaluation of your performance. My only request is, be honest in your evaluation. Sounds a bit harsh doesn’t it but my friends for what it’s worth I think Kelly is spot on. Unfortunately I see a negative leader as, if you like, a ‘handbrake’ to move forward. Attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth catching? I certainly hope so. The Grow 3 is progressing generally speaking satisfactorily in most groups. Numbers and progress will be printed in every Bulletin from now to May 2018. I put it to you there should be no group in this Region that does not have the capacity to grow their numbers by at least 3 during this period of time and beyond. Once again it’s about probably the most important word in the dictionary, in my view. Ie. Attitude.

I will finish with these words: If you think you are beaten, You are If you think to dare and think you can’t You won’t If you like to win but think you can’t, You’ve lost For out in this world we find it’s all in the State of the mind.

PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE COVER Claim Form and Procedures. Scouts NSW maintains a Group Personal Accident policy which covers members and volunteers whilst they are engaged in Scout Approved Activities. The insurer of the policy is Chubb Insurance Company of Australia. Note that the Personal Accident Insurance policy is not a substitute for private health insurance and may not address all expenses incurred in connection with an injury. Please Note: Medicare Medical Expenses including any gap payment are not claimable under this policy due to Government Health Insurance Legislation. In addition, it is a condition of this policy that if a covered person holds private health insurance they must claim under their private health insurance policy before submitting a claim under the Scouts Personal Accident policy. In order for a claim to be dealt with as quickly as possible, please ensure that all items as below have been addressed. If further information is required the insurer, Chubb will contact the claimant directly. If there is any concern regarding the claims process or any dissatisfaction with the service or outcome provided by Chubb Scouts NSW or their broker, Aon will be pleased to provide assistance.

HS5 Incident/Accident/Near miss form Just a reminder that when using the HS5 Incident/Accident/Near miss form please ensure that you fill in all sections and that correct contact numbers are given. This has been a problem lately because a number of people nowadays have gone over to only using their mobile numbers as a contact and have had their land line phones disconnected. So could ALL Leaders please contact the Region Office and let them know if there have been any changes to phone numbers, Emails Addresses and any other statistics in your file. Region Office Contact 49500999. Your assistance with the above will help in the follow up to HS5 reports. Also please use the latest version of the HS5 Form March 2016. Unfortunately we are still receiving HS5 reports of Leaders or Youth being injured when leaders are participating in games with the youth members. It is recommended that leaders do not participate in games with youth members. I understand that there are leaders who do not see it as a problem. Believe me it can be. Leaders should supervise not participate. You may get away with it but sooner or later it will happen. Don’t think it can’t happen to you. It can.

Training Report I was so pleased to see many Leaders from this Region applying for their advanced training, BRAVO to all, I look forward to seeing all those woodbadges presented. Did you miss the June closing date? It’s OK you can apply for the October courses, just check the Scouts NSW website for the closing dates and course numbers. I have just returned from MOSC, what a great weekend. BRAVO to Jenny Kearns and David Downie for putting on such a fun and informative weekend. Apart from a heap of information, what came out of MOSC in relation to training was that YOU want a Level 2 Canoeing accredited course locally, so before I can apply for this course I want expressions of interest. Please send me an email at [email protected], stating your name and group. We are looking to hold this in spring on Lake Macquarie, so now it’s over to you. I will only apply for this course to be held locally if I get the numbers. Remember you need a Level 2 to take your youth on the water. If you have taken on a dual appointment or your wish to move to another section, you must train into that section, please log into Elearning and do the appropriate modules, apply for your residential weekend, complete your L10 inservice before applying for a transfer. Have a great month.

Remember, with training you will INSPIRE our Youth to try new things, DEVELOP LEADERSHIP skills to run ENGAGING programs and gain RESILENCE and CONFIDENCE in yourself.

Joey Scouts Report How’s everyone’s mobs hopping along? Overall Region numbers are on the increase but, the Joeys seem to be stuck in a holding pattern around 300. If everyone could just get one or two more kids to come along then, apart from the fears that your mobs will turn to chaos, the kids will build more social skills and your mob can play even more games that smaller mobs struggle to play. Here are a few other things going on, get out, participate in some of the topics below.

Wandarrahs District Wandarrahs are bouncing along slowly, each District has a different way in which the meetings are run and occur, please make an effort to attend a District Wandarrah as they are a great opportunity to meet new people and socialise ideas amongst your peers. The dates and times of the next Wandarrahs are listed below, along with a contact number for each respective person. These dates and times will now be on the bottom of all Joey leader news articles. If a location has a TBA next to it, it’s because we currently don’t have a District Joey Leader in that area. If you would like a Wandarrah run, I’m more than happy so just shoot me and email.

Promise Challenges Great work to all our wonderful Joeys on all the promise challenges that have been flowing through. To all those Joey leaders that have been wondering where to send them please take them to your District Wandarrah and from there they will be emailed to me.

Joey Leader News If you’re not receiving Joey leader news and would like to please email me so I can add you to the list. My email address is below.

Konara For all those that went to Konara, I’m sure that they can say that they had a blast, with the event getting better as the weekend went on. There were so many options of things to see and do to broaden your horizons and grow your Joey mob. Leaders from interstate even attended the weekend and had so much to offer. Everyone was given a flash drive full of great resources so every base could be replicated. The next event will be held in 2020 so please make sure that you plan to attend; it’s a great weekend for Joey Leaders to just chill out and network with other Joey leaders while in a wonderful fun learning environment.

Wandarrah Dates, Times & Locations Newcastle District - Next Meeting is on 9th of August 7:00pm with a location TBC Please message Louis to confirm meeting is till on 0468748188 Lake Macquarie District - 2nd Monday of the Month 7pm at Club Macquarie 458 Lake Rd Argenton NSW 2284 Please message Kristy on 0455 946 794 Gosford District - 3rd Thursday of the Month 7pm at Gosford District Scout Hall, 13 Gertrude Place, Gosford. Cub Scouts Report Wow, how much fun did we have at Fun Day! Once the fog cleared, the sun came out there was no rain in sight despite heavy downpours in the days previously. The Cubs arrived with Leaders, Parents and Carers and the fun began. Everywhere you looked there was plenty of smiles and laughter. On the activities which were a bit more challenging, the looks of concentration then excitement when they had succeeded. The mixing of the District bases worked well, as it was great to see Leaders mingling and talking with each other. I would firstly like to thank our District Leaders on putting together a fantastic range of bases, then meeting at 6am on the day to make sure everything was ready for the Cubs. Secondly, thank you to all the Leaders, Cubs and Joeys who helped in the set up and pull down. Finally to all the Leaders who worked tirelessly on the bases. Without your involvement these bases wouldn’t run. It’s really reassuring knowing that when organising these activities that I’ll have your support.

Grey Wolf Awards We had a further 7 Grey Wolf Awards presented this month in the Region. Congratulations to all the Cubs who did such a fantastic job. Just a reminder to Leaders; Grey Wolf Applications with a Group Cheque (no cash or personal cheques) are to be given to your District Leaders not sent into Region Office. The District Leader will then arrange a time with you for them to present this award.

GAS (Gathering of all Sections) Don’t forget to get your group organised to attend GAS (Gathering of all Sections) at Glenrock on 21 & 22 October 2017. All the information and E1’s are on the Region Website at www.scoutreach.org.au. Should be a great weekend so don’t miss out.

Keep smiling,

Activities will be one hour in duration each, and may consist of a number of smaller activities. Patrol Leaders will also be scored on their Leadership Capabilities. www.scoutreach.org.au

Scouts Report, continues Although Scouts will not have to carry their packs between the RACs, there are space restrictions. This is a light weight camp and Scouts MUST camp in hike tents and cook on portable hike stoves. There is no space for full-sized stand up tents.

Walking State Rally has an element of hiking and you might be asked to bush-bash through some activities. During the day, you will make your way to various activities and you could end up walking quite a long way. You and your Patrol will need to prepare for this, practice hiking, carrying a day pack, wear the shoes on the practice hike that you are going to wear to State Rally. Everyone has different stamina and strength; while some in your Patrol are exhausted others will be happily jogging up hills. You should set your Patrols pace to the slowest member as you must stay together.

Weather The State Rally weekend could be three days of fine sunny weather, or it could be (and has been in the past) three days of heavy rain and strong winds. Most likely it will rain at least one day, perhaps more and it will be cold at night. You need to prepare for this by having adequate footwear, rain gear, and tentage. If not, you may well end up with painful foot blisters and spend the weekend wet and cold, which despite being miserable can be very dangerous. There are no facilities to dry your gear out at State Rally.

Team work You must spend the entire event together as a Patrol. You cannot split up for any reason. You need to get along with each other. Teamwork does not always come naturally. You need to listen to each other, and consider what each member of your Patrol has to say. When you decide on a course of action, such as how to do an activity or which meal to eat next, do it together and then support each other in implementing it. If the idea isn’t working stop together and discuss the problem again.

A.S.M. AWARDS Congratulations to the following scouts who received their Australian Scout Medallion’s recently, & will receive their ASM Certificates in Sydney in August. Venturer Scouts Report CHALLENGE ONE UPDATE Increase the overall Venturer numbers to 250 (min) for H&C Region Following are our overall numbers for Venturers throughout the Hunter and Coastal Region. Each month we are seeing an increase but as mentioned in earlier bulletin articles there are still Scouts that have linked to Venturers but remain on Scoutlink as Scouts. Please update the records through your Group Leader or Leader in Charge ASAP. If one of these youth members apply for a course they may not be accepted as the records show they are Scouts. The following Venturer numbers are taken from Scoutlink: As at 1/4/17 208

As at 17/5/17 224

As at 12/6/17

228

As we can see from the above figures our Venturer numbers across the Region are increasing and we are all working towards the Challenge One’s target of 250 Venturers. Also, from the figures we can see that every District across the Hunter and Coastal Region has either increased their Venturer numbers or maintained their numbers. No District has had a decrease in Venturers. Well done on exceptional team work by all.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Did you know that there is a dedicated group of volunteers who maintain our wonderful centre at Glenrock? The group is made up of retirees, some of whom do not have a Scouting background, and they really enjoy spending a day working in such beautiful surroundings. Many of the group members are ageing and attendance has declined due to sickness, consequently, we are seeking some additional volunteers so we can maintain the camp and surroundings to a standard that Hunter and Coastal Scouts can be proud of. Thursday is the working day and activities begin at around 9am and conclude between 2 and 3 pm. We operate out of two well equipped workshops and the jobs for the day can range from building and grounds maintenance and improvement through to minor building construction and upgrades, painting and some light engineering. There are a lot of handyman type jobs too. The location is hard to beat, the company is great and the morning tea (supplied) is superb, so if you or someone you know is willing to have a go and spend a rewarding day volunteering, please give Don Keevers a call on 0400062935 for further details. Tradesmen with a current licence would be particularly welcome but there are jobs for anyone who is keen to lend a hand.

Singleton Scout Group 100Yrs Celebration History On the 20th June 2017, Singleton Scout Group celebrates 100 years since being officially registered. In Singleton between 1917 and 1923, the first meetings were held at the Presbyterian Church in the Grounds of the St Elizabeth’s Girls Home. Meetings were held in a building where All Saints Court now stands in High St. Rev Davis was Troop Leader and Mr H Clark Assistant Scout Master. In 1925, the Scout Troop moved to the All Saints Parish Church Hall. The original troop flag was donated by the Dangar family. Then in 1926, the Troops new home was officially opened by the Commissioner of Scouts, Mr Rodd, in the Club Rooms on the corner of George and John Streets. In 1926, the frames verse, ‘The Royal Path of life’, was donated to the Scout Troop, by Mr H.Wright. The plaque from this frame was recovered following the 1955 floods, where items , put in stage at private homes were lost in the flood. The verse was re-produced and the plaque re-fitted and presented back to the Scout Group by the Wright family. Today this framed verse still proudly hangs in the hall???TBC The Group system of Cub Scouts, Scouts and Rover Scouts under the leadership of the Group Scoutmaster was established in 1927, Sea Scouts in 1928, Air Scouts in 1941 and Senior Scouts in 1946 (now known as Venturer Scouts). In 1929, the Scouts moved again to the ‘Old Elite Hall’ in John St, the location of Evidence Surf Shop. The Group temporarily closed from this location in 1947. Scouts used a building at the present day location of the Car Wash on George St. The former Patron and Singletons oldest Scout, Harrold (Doug) Hobden, recalls his Scouting days at this location in the mid 1930s. The troop travelled to a Jamboree by train and this was possibly The first Australian Jamboree, in 1934, and was held in Frankston, Victoria and was attended by the World Chief Scout, Robert Baden-Powell. In 1936, Singleton Scout Group reflected in Glory as 3 of their members were awarded ‘Kings Scouts’. In 1947, Cub Scouts were added to the Troop with the induction of female Cub Scout Masters. In Singleton Mrs Medicott was inducted, and she served for many years. In 1949, the Group re-opened in the ‘Old Drill Hall’ in William St, where the Bowling Club stands today. They remained at this location until 1952 when it had to be vacated. This building was sold by the Military and demolished in 1959. In 1952, the Scout again trooped across town to new quarters, this time to the use of a building in the Show Grounds. In 1955, there was another move to the old ‘St Luke’s Parish Hall’ in Albert St, just up the road from the present day Edwards St hall. They stayed here for nearly 18 years, their second longest home in 100 years! The Venturer second had been formed some time earlier and continued on at Albert St. In 1973, a hall was donated in Carrington St, the site of the present day caravan park in Glenridding. The hall was donated by Mr George Wyatt and was named as such. For the Scout Group, this was the first true hall of their own. The Carrington St hall site was to be resumed in 1977 and the Singleton Scout Group was forced to move again. In 1976, the new modern Edwards St Scout Hall was built through generous support of the community in Apex Park. In 1990, Joey Scouts began in Australia, and soon after Singleton had a Mob. Singleton Scout Group now had four active sections catering for youth from 6 to 18 years of age. Today, 100 years on the Singleton Scout Group enjoys a long term lease until 2023 in Edward St, and has over 80 members. Scouting fosters, the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual development of youth, through the ‘Scouting Method’ and the series of hall, the community support and especially the thousands of individuals who have made Scouting happen in Singleton must be thanked for this. www.scoutreach.org.au
