KENNEDY MIDDLE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES AND CLUBS Robotics Club Mr. Stefanini- Room 144 Robotics is open to all students. The Robotics Club constructs robots from Legos and then programs the robots using Lego Mindstorms and Lego NXT software. The Robotics Club is an informal environment where students do problem solving with Legos while using math and science. Team members work in groups to design, build, and program LEGO robots to compete in LEGO League competition. Robotics meets on Tuesdays from 2:05 – 2:50. Kennedy Weather Service Mr. Forest- Rm. 224 The Kennedy Weather Service is a club for weather enthusiasts that meets in the mornings from 7:10 until 7:35 every school day. Students will have the chance to become amateur meteorologists while plotting, gathering, and mapping weather data. The Weather Service begins at the end of September and runs until the end of May and specializes in making weather predictions for Natick and the surrounding area. The Weather Service maintains the Kennedy website and provides information to local TV stations and newspapers. Students as Readers Mrs. Rotkiewicz, Ms. Dion - Library Are you the kind of kid who always has a book in your hand? Do people keep telling you to stop reading and do your homework? If you enjoy talking about fantastic books and have ideas for new titles you've been waiting to get your hands on, Students As Readers is the place for you. Join Mrs. Rotkiewicz and other book lovers for lively discussions about books we love, books we don't love, and your ideas about what makes a great book. Students as Readers meets the last Wednesday of every month. Math Club Ms. Buck, Rm. 245 Do you Sudoku? Would you like to learn how? Join the Math Club! Open to all students in grade 5-8. Numerical puzzles, logic puzzles, word games, lateral thinking puzzles, riddles and brain teasers are what you have to look forward

to! In addition to number games we'll also be putting together a team to participate in Math Counts, a national math enrichment program. Students from all grades are welcome. Math meets take place from October to April. You need not compete in Math Counts to take part in the Math Club! We will meet every Tuesday. Art Club Ms. Kassap- Rm. 241 The art club is an opportunity for students to explore new materials and activities that are not a part of the regular art curriculum. The activities will change approximately every six weeks. The activities planned may include jewelry making, paper crafts, printmaking and collage. Interested students will bring and demonstrate a willingness to work together, work hard and have fun! Art Club will meet the first and third Thursday of every month from 2:05 – 2:50 beginning. Specialty Chorus Mr. Griffin- Rm. 148 This group meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:05-2:50. It is an opportunity for all students in all grades to participate in a smaller chorus group with more challenging music. Band students are encouraged to participate in this singing opportunity. Any student who is interested in participating in the Jr. District Chorus Auditions should seriously consider this club. Students will be introduced to the audition selections through Specialty Chorus. See Mr. Griffin with questions. Jr. District Chorus Mr. Griffin – Rm 148 Meets before school each day. 5th Grade Musical Theater Club – Spring programMr. Griffin- Rm. 148 Students will rehearse and perform a short musical, which will be selected specifically to provide a cross curriculum experience. This club will meet after school from 2:05 -2:50. Day TBD. See Mr. Griffin with questions. School Musical Mr. Griffin and Mr. Lane - Auditorium The school musical is a tradition here at Kennedy. The school musical is in production from December through March. Auditions will take place in November. The musical will be performed a weekend in March and we will

perform four shows on that weekend. Mr. Griffin and Mr. Lane will be collaborating on directing. The Musical will be officially announced at Kennedy by mid October. See Mr. Griffin with questions. Drama - Fall Play – Mr.Lane - Auditorium This non musical production for Grades 7 & 8 meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-4. Students must arrange their own transportation home. Grade 6 students may join as part of the stage crew. Jazz Band - Room 149 Mr. Drapeau Meets in the Band room on Wednesdays after school from 2:05 – 2:50. Grade 5 Select Band – Rm. 149 Mr. Drapeau meets Tuesdays after winter concert. Honors Wind Ensemble – Room 149 Mr. Drapeau Meets in the Band room some Mondays and every Thursday until December from 2:05 – 2:50. Student Council Ms. Lemoine, Mr. Heller – Room 246 The KMS Student Council is a group of student representatives from grades 5-8 who serve as school leaders. Together we discuss and plan fundraisers for social activities for students in grades 5-8. In addition, Student Council members serve the school and community through volunteer efforts. Student Council will meet the first Tuesday of each month from 2:05-2:50. Yearbook Ms. Knapik, Ms. Marshall-Room 199 Each year students work with faculty to plan, produce and sell the Kennedy yearbook. Students determine what will be included in the book, assist with collecting and selecting photos. Students have a chance to work individually and in small groups developing organizational editing and production skills. Yearbook will meet on Tuesdays until November then Mondays going forward from 2:05-2:50.

Interact/Community Service Club Mrs. Dwyer - Room 210 This club seeks to organize students interested in leadership skills through community service. Students work with their advisor to determine small group community service activities which they can organize and participate in. This club will meet every other Tuesday from 2:05-2:50. Intramurals Mr. Rollins All students are invited and encouraged to participate in after school sports and games. These activities are often held for boys and girls and mixed grades; however, some are grade or gender specific. The intent of intramurals is to encourage good physical health and fun. Intramurals are not based upon ability but rather interest. Intramurals will be flag football, volleyball, soccer or basketball (listen to daily announcements for specific activities) with Mr. Rollins. Intramurals take place outside or in the gym Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:05-2:50. Destination Imagination - Room 199 Ms. Knapik This club is a creative problem-solving club for students of all ages, in which teams of three to seven students select a problem, work together to create a solution, and then present their solution either to their peers or at the state wide competition in the early spring. This year the problems include building and operating various vehicles, creating an original performance and building a structure. This is truly a student-centered club because team members come up with all ideas and do all the work themselves. Days will vary. Peer Leadership – Mrs. Morin, Mrs. MacDonald, Mrs. Hacket

Cross Country – Mr. Power, Mrs. Wolf – Meets Monday through Thursday in the fall. Grade 8 Basketball – Mr. Raider, Mr. Lyth – Tryouts Held the week after Thanksgiving.

Field Hockey - Mr. Tomaso - gr. 6-8. First practice is September 12 at 3:10. Games to be announced.

*Unless otherwise noted, all activities are over in time for bus students to get on the late buses. **Clubs that meet on Mondays will not meet the first Monday of each month due to teacher meetings.
