Shabbat Parashat Lech Lecha - �‫שַ בָּ ת ָפּ ָרשַׁ ת לֶ � ְל‬ At the beginning of this week’s ‫( פּ ָָרשַׁ ה‬parasha)  (Avram) was commanded by  to leave his home in  (Charan) to travel to the land of ‫( כְּ נַעַ ן‬Canaan).

          

 said to  “Go for yourself from your own country, from your birthplace and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you”. (12:1)

 left without delay, taking his wife Sarai (), his nephew, Lot (), and some of the people whom they had taught to believe in . Soon after they arrived in Canaan, the rain stopped falling and there was a famine but  never complained as he always trusted in .

:‫ַוי ְִהי ָרעָ ב בָּ ָא ֶרץ ַויּ ֵֶרד ַאבְ ָרם ִמצְ ַריְמָ ה לָגוּר שָׁ ם כִּ י־כָבֵ ד הָ ָרעָ ב בָּ ָא ֶרץ‬

“There was a family in the Land (of Canaan) and Avram went down to Egypt as the famine was very strong” (12:10)

,  and , left Canaan and travelled to Egypt, where there was plenty of food.  had to pretend that  was his sister, because when the Egyptians saw a beautiful woman, they used to murder

the husband and take the wife for themselves. However, Sarai was kidnapped by Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Hashem brought a plague on Pharaoh who then released Sarai and sent Sarai, Avraham and Lot back to Canaan with much wealth.

When they returned to ‫ כְּ נַעַ ן‬Hashem told  that he would have a son. The Midrash tells us that  showed him the sky in which there was a huge star. The star represented . Then there were two stars - they represented  and his son. Three stars appeared - they represented , his son and grandson. Twelve stars appeared - these represented the twelve tribes. Seventy stars appeared - they represented the seventy people who would eventually travel to Egypt. Soon the sky was filled with stars, too many to count.  told  that these would be his descendants.  also promised  that his children would inherit the land of Canaan - but first they would be exiled in a strange land before they would come back into Canaan.

He circumcised himself and every member of his household and was commanded that this  shall be observed by all his descendants. Every newborn Jewish male shall be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth.
