TRIBES
While the main mode of delivery is direct instruction, presenter(s) recognize the value of including individual reflecting time and collaborative processing conversations within the session to deepen learning.
The learning is driven by a mixture of individual participant learning goals and collective learning targets focusing on the specific development of skills, strategies, techniques, processes, and approaches.
Collaborative engagement and constructive critique comprise the majority of time with targeted “enrichment” experiences designed to provide opportunities for relearning and un-learning.
The TRIBES Learning Communities process is used to facilitate human development and learning by creating a caring culture and actively engaging learners in relevant, meaningful, & personalized learning experiences.

Grant Writing Instructional Level: Skill-Building Instructional Format: Guided Practice In these tough economic times, finding ways to secure necessary and supplemental classroom supplies can be a challenge. Learning how to write grants can help educators in all content areas and grade levels to find resources and motivate donors to supplement their classroom budgets. During this session, educators will gain experience using DonorsChoose.org, a website allowing educators to write grants and seek funding from donors who are interested in supporting classrooms in need. As a result of this session, educators will become proficient using DonorsChoose to write and publicize grants, and will have one active grant posted on the website. Educators should come to the session with at least one classroom photo, following the anonymity guidelines on DonorsChoose. Educators will need one photo to activate their accounts and begin writing grants on this website. Date: 2/2/2012 Location: HS Library Instructor: Markette Pierce
Teaching w/ Technology and the Common Core State Standards Instructional Level: Skill Building Instructional Format: Interactive Direct Instruction “Technology is at the core of virtually every aspect of our daily lives and work.” (Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education) This phrase is comparatively accurate especially when it comes to the Common Core State Standards. With a focus on technology, this workshop will first provide an overview of the new Common Core State Standards. Next, participants will be exposed to a variety of digital content and media forms such as audio, video and photo. At the conclusion of this workshop, the participants will begin to examine how technology can transform their teaching, instruction and student learning by integrating these various tools into an everyday lesson and unit. EQ 5: What are the most powerful learning experiences for all our students?
Enhancing Literacy Instruction with a Document Camera Instructional Level: Skill-Building Instructional Format: Guided Practice Literacy instruction just got high-tech! By using a document camera effectively and purposefully in the classroom, teachers can help struggling readers and writers to see what good readers and writers do while attempting to understand or produce a text. Using a document camera allows a teacher or student to model active reading strategies, to share student work immediately, and to help nudge good writing toward being great writing as a class suggests items for revision. Participants in this course will learn how to install and integrate document cameras with SMART Notebook software, and will also leave with a lesson that uses document cameras to make explicit what good readers and writers inherently do. *Note: The document camera used in this workshop is available for loan by contacting the help desk @ x1233. Date: 4/17/2012 Location: HS Library Instructor: Markette Pierce
Facilitated On-Line Learning Instructional Level: Skill Building Instructional Format: Interactive Direct Instruction The series is designed to offer support & guidance to any and all types of technology questions. Your questions will be answered using a combination of 1:1, small group, and online learning. These introductory level sessions are designed for participants who desire online, individualized learning but lack the technical confidence to get started. Come to any of these workshops if you have a burning technology question such as how to use Word, Excel, Powerpoint, or Google Apps (to name a few)! The facilitator will assist participants with customizing an individual, online learning path through the use of Atomic Learning and other online learning management systems. Attend one or all of the series. Date: Date: Date: Date:
