Do you remember taking a teacher prep course in college that explored dozens and dozens of teaching and learning strategies? Me neither. Well, it’s never too late to learn. After a brief overview of Discovery Education resources, we will take a close look at many of 100+ strategies that are part of the Spotlight on Strategies (S.O.S.) series from Discovery Education. These strategies include topics like Compare & Contrast, Key Ideas and Details, Instructional Hooks, Sequencing, Summarizing, and others. Participants will learn about the free eResources available in the Teens Gateway of the Michigan eLibrary such as Britannica School, Opposing Viewpoints in Context, Research in Context, and Learning Express Library, just to name few. We will also explore the Google Integration of Gale products. Learn to attachment files, Google Drive documents, YouTube videos, and resource links. See how you can give an assignment or post an announcement to multiple classes at once. Work through the assignment workflow – from how students submit completed assignments to how a teacher grades and return assignments. This 1/2 day session will overview some of the easiest, most engaging Web 2.0 tools for formative assessment today. You will be introduced to a variety of tools and given time to create accounts as well as assessments that you can use to start the school year. You're sure to leave this session with a number of tools you can use the first week of classes.

Creative writing can get rather boring when you have to grade 125 papers on the same topic. Imagine giving students a choice in their assignments while making them more interesting for you. There are many easy web tools that you have already heard of that help give students a voice in the modern world. Join us as we explore how to increase literacy in an ELA classroom through the use of classroom blogs and web-based publishing tools such as Weebly and LucidPress among others. Coding & Programming Boot Camp: Starting From Scratch

In this session, we will begin to demystify the language of computer science with some simple and free resources for educators and students. We will explore several online sites that help transform computer programming into "building block" type games that engage students and help them to start to build the vocabulary of coding. Learn how to integrate Google CS First, a pre-made, student-friendly coding curriculum that can be started and run easily by teachers from any skill level. Beginners are welcome...please bring your own Chromebook / laptop. Leaders from the tech community and even the President are calling for more students to consider computer science as a possible career. Using these resources, students will gain vital experience in this challenging and lucrative STEM field, all while having a blast doing so!

Google Forms is a powerful tool within the Google suite of applications. With Forms, you can gather information, survey participants, assign quizzes and much more. You will learn how create/edit/share basic forms, including adding images and videos, section breaks and headers. We will also include advanced features such as data validation and page redirects. As a bonus, we will learn about Add-ons to give some extra power to your forms and spreadsheets. Participants will leave with a solid, hands-on Google Form experience. This session will focus on both free and subscription based Chrome tools to support students who struggle with reading and writing. Writing tools covered will include free word completion and dictation options, as well as a new subscription based tool which offers word prediction to support students with significant spelling challenges. Reading tools covered will include free text readers (Chrome Speak and Select & Speak), as well as a new subscription based text reader which offers options for on-the-fly adjustment of complexity of online reading. Join us to find out how you can use these tools to increase written output and academic success of your students with writing and spelling challenges. Say Cheese!

Get ready to go on an image adventure! Are you ready to explore how to use images in educational settings? Liven up your curriculum and engage your students with images. This session is for any grade level and any subject area! Learn how to search for Creative Commons images, create diagrams in Google Drawing, edit photos using fun, free apps and visit Google’s Cultural Institute. We will also go outside, where you will learn firsthand how you can use images in your class by participating in a digital, image rich scavenger hunt. All of the apps we use are free and fun to use.
