SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL March 2015  410 S. Division Street, Sandpoint ID Notes from Mr. Albertson…….. As I have stated before, each student’s education is a partnership between student, parents, and the school. As we head into the month of March it is a great time to be reminded of the accountability measures put in place to measure each school’s progress. Sandpoint High School receives a school report card measuring Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) based on the Idaho State Department of Education’s Star rating system. The Star rating measures a school in the following areas:

 Achievement: Results on the Idaho State exam  Student Growth: Measured growth on the Idaho State Exam over multiple grade levels.  Post Secondary and Career Readiness: Graduation Rate, college entrance exam scores, and advanced opportunities for students – Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Credit, and Professional Technical Education (PTE) courses.

 Participation: 95% participation rate on the State exam must be met by SHS including all subgroups. With this in mind it is important for students and parents to partner with the school to get prepared for the ISAT2 State exam scheduled to start April 7th, the SAT/Compass test April 15th for Juniors, and in the pre-registration process for next year’s course selections which will happen in the month of March. All three of these events are important to take seriously as students prepare and plan for post-secondary opportunities. As you engage in these crucial conversations with your teen about his or her future a great question to ask is, “Who do you want to be?” Then sit back and really listen to his/her response. I promise that you will gain some insightful knowledge about your teen’s thoughts in answering this question. The answer to this question has the power to create intrinsic motivation – the necessary ingredient for goal attainment. If you have any questions or concerns the door is always open at Sandpoint High School; we will assist in anyway we can. Thank you for your support, Tom Albertson, Principal

EAA Supports Sandpoint High School’s Pilot Ground School Course. This is the first year for the pilot ground school course at Sandpoint High School. The goal of the program is to have students earn their sport or private pilot’s license by the end of school year. Earning your pilots license can be a costly process. The local Sandpoint Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapter has offered its support in many forms, one of which is scholarships. Three Sandpoint High School students were each awarded a $750.00 scholarship towards their pilot’s license from the EAA at February’s meeting. Annie Orton, former director of the Young Eagles program, stated, “The three applicants were too good to just pick two so they set out to find more money; and we did!” All three students are now closer to flying solo.
